Johab Silva
ARTT370 Expecting an A- Anonymous 10/10/2023 |
It is hard to convey in words how terrible Johab Silva is as a professor. He is universally hated by all of his students for many, many justified reasons that I can only scratch the surface in a review like this. Taking a class with Johab Silva is an experience, but one that will leave you with extreme levels of trauma. During classes, he will nonstop ramble about his life for the entire class period in ways that are rarely interesting or relevant to class, which is impressive considering that classes are around 2 1/2 hours. He gives little room for students to add their own thoughts as he believes his own thoughts are gospel. The worst part is, he will often forget to go over important things like how to do the projects. The projects are terrible. His expectations are super vague on ELMS, but during critique and grading he will practically make up criteria and be super strict about you following them. If you ever ask him for help on an aspect of making the project, he will tell you to figure it out yourself as he believes that artists are supposed to know how to adapt and figure things out on your own. And the reason he never helps is because he never know how to do anything that you need for the projects. The amount of time he gives you to do projects are extremely short, such as how he expected our class to make our second project that includes a full sculpture and 3 completely new software in just a week and a half. He also expects everyone to have equipment for the projects, such as expecting everyone to have their own personal projector and monitor to use for project. And no, he barely helps with getting the equipment you need. Critiques days for projects are some of the most traumatizing and stressful classes you will ever have. He expects projects to be showcased in "museum quality" and will critique you for every part of the display, such as judging the placement of every wire and backpack next to your project. He only gives the class 30 minutes to set up the projects (which is very little time for a museum quality digital instillation) and if you have technical difficulties or want his help in any way, well, too bad because he will refuse to help you. For critique, he will make up guidelines on the spot so you never know if you have to talk about your project for 2 minutes or 5 minutes or whatever time he decides on, and he will make sure you are talking the whole time he decided on. He will then critique your project and essentially make up guidelines that he says you should have followed. Asking for accommodations of any kind will not work out well. In our class, we had a 2 person team project and a team had one member was sick and was unable to come to critique. He decided that instead allowing the critique to happen on the next class day, which he said in a previous class he would allow, he decided instead that the one team member who was able to come should be in charge of setting up and holding critique themselves. Any time you ask him for an accommodation, he will go out of your way to make things even harder for you. Essentially, he expects you to be as flexible as possible, while he will be as inflexible as possible. There is definitely even more things to complain about, but hopefully this gives you a general idea of how bad classes are with him. I have yet to meet anyone with anything positive to say about him, so be warned if you ever take a class with him in the future. |
