Yes, this is hard class, but Dr. Karen is a great teacher and really cares about her students. She gives you lots of resources that you will find useful for studying: GAEs, concept checks, homework, etc. She is passionate about bio and puts effort into making class fun when she can. She has been my favorite freshman professor. |

Dr. Shofner is a sweet woman but oh my god this class was a DISASTER. I took it online and it was incredibly disorganized. Half the time she wouldn't show up to the weekly zooms and when she did she would ramble on about unrelated topics and basically just repeat everything that was in the recorded lecture. The lectures were supposed to be 50 min, 2 per week however they would end up being closer to an 1 hour 15 min and there would be multiple per day. Sometimes she would just not post a lecture though which I assumed meant she was giving us the day off, then later post it right before the test and say the material covered would be on it. The material on the tests was not at all reflective of what was covered in the lecture and the TAs were incredibly strict about giving partial credit. The tests are also poorly written and many of the questions made no sense. And I know this part has nothing to do with her but the class is just so stupid the information is useless and not applicable to most bio majors. |

Dr. Karen is honestly the best professor I’ve had my freshman year. BSCI207 has a lot of content and memorization, but Dr. Karen makes it very palatable. The group activities (GAEs) are very helpful for learning the content and she lets us have a one-page cheat sheet on exams. The lowest midterm, homework, and GAE are dropped. This class does require a lot of effort and studying (review the GAEs and homeworks), but I strongly believe Dr. Karen makes it more enjoyable for us. |

I took this online during Spring. It was once a week and even for an online this was incredibly disorganized. Just an overflow of information with not real foundation, just jumping from topic to topic. You are also graded on group work, which due to my class being online made it a little difficult to get organized with your team members. Overall I was lucky that it was online, but just the lack of organization made this class unfun. |

Okay so if you're pre-med or any type of pre-health this is going to be the least interesting class you take. Don't get me wrong, Dr. Fletcher is a great professor and you can tell that he really cares about what he's teaching. But oh my god it was so hard for me to care about things like the evolution of fungi. All of his assignments outside of class are easy, take little to no time or can be found on quizlet/coursehero. His exams are fair but theres just so much content to cover. The best advice I can give is to study a little bit after every lecture. If you're able to get access to his past exams you are GOLDEN. Most questions he will use are either exactly the same or some kind of re-work (especially for multiple choice) so you get a really good idea of what information he will want you to get out of it. Overall he's a great guy but if you have poor executive function and need to find things interesting to feel motivated to study them, good luck. I ONLY SAY THIS FOR 207 THOUGH. I also had him for 170, and that class was a delight to take with him. |

I'll start by saying Dr. Shofner is very nice and cares about her students, but that doesn't make up for how unorganized this class is. My class is online and is supposed to be asynchronous with prerecorded lectures and optional question sessions on Zoom every Monday and Wednesday which also serve as her office hours, but very little effort is put into making this class. For the last 4 slide presentations, she hasn't posted the lecture videos (which she explicitly said she will post for all of the slides). There are just slides on new material. Some have just diagrams, but there is no explanation. I signed up for this class knowing there would be video lectures, but now there aren't. Dr. Shofner also doesn't show up to her two day a week office hours/question sessions sometimes with 0 notice or sometimes she will show up 20 minutes late when they are only 50 minutes long. I know professors deal with stuff in their personal lives too, but for the amount of money I had to work for to pay to take this course it is not fair. |

Dr. Karen is the sweetest professor, who is extremely passionate about what she teaches and cares about her students a lot. I really enjoyed when she included a bit of outside information that connected to the topics and found it very interesting. The lectures are packed with information, so I would highly recommend rewatching the lectures to ensure understanding of all content. However, all the material needed for the midterms and exams is covered by the GAEs and lectures. The homework and GAEs are basically completion and still the lowest HW and GAE scores are dropped, same with the lowest midterm score. Also, a cheat sheet was allowed for each midterm, which really helped consolidate certain information. Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. Karen as a professor and the class. |

Dr. Karen is one of the professors who wants students to actually learn and appreciate the wonders of the content. BSCI207 was a bumpy but enjoyable ride despite the absolute whirlwind of information. However, Dr. Karen accommodates that by providing everything you possibly need to succeed in this course, from providing practice questions, recording lectures, and having office hours online to allowing a cheat sheet for every exam! She even drops the lowest midterm and provides extra credit opportunities twice in the semester. Homework and GAEs are basically exam preps and graded for completion. However, still put the effort in and compare with answer keys to test your understanding. Although lectures were a little hard to follow, Dr. Karen is still one of the best professors at UMD I've had so far. She genuinely cares about what she's teaching and her students. |

Dr. Fletcher is a great professor and he makes it very easy to succeed in his class! If you put in just a little bit of time (which I didn't do and still ended up with a B+) you can totally get an A. A decent amount of stuff is graded for completion and one exam is dropped. I always enjoy having him as a professor and he really wants to see all of his students succeed. |

Dr. Karen is the nicest professor I have had so far at UMD! She was super accommodating when I got a concussion and had to make up an exam weeks later. She was always so encouraging and gave great, in-depth answers during office hours. A lot of the exam questions pull from the homeworks, GAEs, and concept checks so doing/reviewing those is a great way to study. She drops the lowest exam of 3 and also gives some extra credit. Her final was very fair and I was able to guess most of the topics that would appear. Her lectures are very dense material wise so I would definitely look over them afterwards to make sure you know what's happening in each one. Take her! |

Dr. Karen was an incredibly kind and intelligent woman, and a great teacher. Regardless, BSCI207 is a very difficult class (at least it was for me - I was a freshman who placed out of BSCI160 & 170, so I jumped straight in). There is SO much content that it gets very overwhelming. She drops one of three midterms, which is very nice though! I found it kind of hard to follow her lectures, but I am not sure if that had anything to do with her or if it's just because the class is hard. She also has office hours in person and on zoom! All lectures are recorded and posted on canvas as well. |

Dr. Fletcher is amazing. A good person, fair grades (lowest midterm is dropped!), extra credit, and reasonable workload are all things you get with him. Additionally, he encourages questions, is good at explaining topics, and is very welcoming. For the workload, he assigns a short concept check after every lecture, the classes with the group activity have some prep material involved, and there are usually 2-3 homework assignments per midterm, but that's it. For studying, Dr. Fletcher posts an exam guide before every exam that includes some practice exam questions that might even appear on the actual exam. He also allows you to write notes on your equation sheet to use as a reference on the exams. Thank you so much Dr. Fletcher for allowing the reference sheet because there is just so much content covered in BSCI207, I wouldn't even know where to begin studying for it. The exams themselves aren't that hard and they accurately reflect the lecture and GAE material, but there's just a lot of material you have to remember. He also records his lectures which is extremely convenient for note-taking considering the amount of content in this course. The only real downside I can think of is that the final exam is worth more than 1/3 of the final grade, so you really have to study for it. Even then, having this downside is more than worth everything else Dr. Fletcher has to offer. |

She is easily one of the best professors I've had so far and potentially one of the best I will ever have. She is not only very experienced with teaching this class but is also genuinely invested in the content and her students. This was the first biology class I had taken in 2 years (AP bio junior year, freshman at the time of writing this) and she made the daunting amount of information in this class extremely manageable and interesting. I will say her lectures are very content packed and we didn't finish all of it every lecture but I think that's just the nature of the class and is difficult to work around. There's also GAE classes which are in-class group activities that essentially force you to make study friends which I really appreciated as I probably wouldn't have gone out of my way to talk to people there otherwise. Her exams are completely fair and not too difficult if you adequately prepare for them and she lets you make cheat sheets for them. She does not curve the class (I don't think it needs too) but she drops the lowest exam, the lowest homework grade, and the lowest GAE score. That said, the homework are for completion, the GAE activity, and the GAE pre-quizes are open note so you'll basically guaranteed to ace them. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend taking 207 with her. |

dr. fletcher is so sweet!! he's an amazing professor and really explains so many concepts very well, making them both interesting and informative. lectures are recorded, there are concept checks and outside pre-work usually once a week (GAEs), and homework is graded for completion. while the slides were dense, they're always easy to come back to and relearn if you don't fully understand or miss a concept during class. the work is very manageable and dr. fletcher is the GOAT!! :D |

Would recommend taking Fletcher. He tries to make lecture engaging and is very enthusiastic about the material. For assignments there are a few homeworks, which are challenging but not too difficult, concept checks after every lecture, and the group worksheets done usually once a week or once every two weeks. The exams are very fair and he allows a note sheet for each one. In lecture he also explains the topics beyond just what is written on the slides and records his lectures which is very helpful for studying. Great teacher! |

Probably one of the best professors i've had. He actually cares about his students and always comes in with a smile, which does more than you think if you're having a stressful day :). I would love to take him again. My advice is don't try and memorize the powerpoints. I would write almost everything on the powerpoint on my reference sheet and it would barley help. This is because he wants you to have a good understanding of overall concepts, rather than trying to memorize a bunch of facts. Great class, if you do the work, it is easy to succeed with Dr. Fletcher! |

Dr. Carleton is very kind and tries to make the class interactive by asking students to answer the questions and there’s an activity once a week where you work with others. Her lectures are recorded and she posts the slides with the content. If I didn’t have her at 9am I would’ve gone to class more often lol, but she’s a good professor. She also allows a cheat sheet for exams |

Dr. Shapiro is super nice and fun! I don't see why other reviewers called him boring. He really cares about these topics (especially scaling, so be sure to study that). His lectures are super super dense, which can be tiring, but he makes jokes to help you get through them. He is very open to criticism. One of my classmates informed him that he lectured too fast, and by the next class it was fixed. He assigned a super hard homework, which received complaints, and he apologized. It did not happen again. You definitely don't see this type of behavior often from professors. When a class average on an exam was too low (I don't know exactly what percent that was) he would scale it up a couple points. Also, an entire exam was dropped, and there were a couple points of extra credit given during the semester. There are small multiple choice quizzes given on each topic, and 5 homework assignments. He extended the deadline on a lot of our quizzes, but I would not expect that to occur as often in the future. The exams are a bit tough because the material is a bit tough. But, they're fair, especially given that one of the 3 exams was dropped. Overall, I would take a class with Dr. Shapiro again. I have not had many STEM professors that care about their students as much as he does. |

Really good lecturer and overall an extremely nice person. Lecture slides are posted but I highly recommend attending lectures because anything he emphasizes almost always shows up on tests. If you really just pay attention to what he is saying you can get an A. Exams are extremely fair and similar to the practice questions he posts. The quizzes always have one hard question. I got a 4/5 on almost every quiz. Homeworks are easy and graded lightly. Overall he is extremely nice he was consistently extending quiz and homework deadlines to help people out. |

Dr. Carleton is one of the best teachers I have had. She broke down the content into well-organized lectures. She was very clear with what will be tested and made the memorization-heavy content digestible. She allowed us to make and have a cheat sheet which was a lifesaver. DO THE CONCEPT CHECKS! The concept checks are going to be very helpful. She genuinely is a good teacher and wants you to do well. |

Great professor! He really cares about all of his students and listens to any concerns we have about exams, homework, due dates, etc. The class is definitely hard, but the work and exams are fair. you should definitely go to lecture, he posts the slides on canvas, but he talks about them and adds a lot more info that isn’t on the power point. He adds in humor which keeps the class engaging and fun. |

I loved Dr. Karen. She is the sweetest professor I've had so far and she clearly cares about what she's teaching. The only reason I took off a star is because classes are boring and she kinda just reads from the slide. I also had a hard time telling what to study or telling how specific the exams would get about the content. But other than that it was chill. There are concept checks that are ungraded practice DO THEM literally like 30% of the first exam multiple choice I already knew because I did the checks. Could have gotten an A if I studied more and went to class :/ |

Fletcher is the nicest guy you'll ever meet; he makes the class environment super welcoming towards new students and won't hesitate to help you. However, I found his exams kinda difficult; they are very detail-oriented, and while it holds true that everything comes off of his slideshows, his slideshows are each about 75 slides long, and there's around 10 slideshows per unit. It's a lot of content to cover. If I could retake the course, I'd start reviewing information earlier before exams because a lot of it is memory based. I also think his lectures are more on the ramble-y side, but he records them, so you don't have to attend if you don't want to. Overall, great and approachable guy! |

Like everyone says, she’s a kind and sincere professor. I just feel the lectures are her reading off the 50 or so slides where we don’t even have time to write much of anything down. Each lecture is pretty loosely related to each other so it doesn’t really matter too much if you skip one because you can watch the recording. I felt she was an alright prof and attribute most of my success to the cheat sheet for exams and just reviewing lecture recordings because I skipped a decent amount of lectures. |

Dr. Fletcher is a great professor! He records all his lectures, drops the lowest grade in each category, and has very fair exams. The questions are always straight forward and I never felt like there was a question that we never covered. He also sometimes cracks jokes or asks you to discuss with your classmates during lecture which keeps you engaged. One complaint though is that he sometimes talks fast and covers a LOT of information in one lecture. It can be really hard to keep up and can get boring at times if you're not interested in the topics. However, I feel like the fact that he records lectures compensate for this since you can always catch up on information you missed later. Overall, nice guy and I would for sure recommend him for 207. |

Fletcher is an amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students and what he's teaching. He's always really clear on what is expected on assignments and exams, and he grades leniently. This course, in general, is super content heavy, so definitely make sure to watch all of the lectures, as each 50 minute lecture has loads of content. He is really great at explaining each concept. The fact that he allows a cheat sheet on his exams definitely helps, and his exams accurately reflect his exam guides, homework, and GAEs. As long as you do all of the work and keep up on lectures, you will be fine. I would highly recommend taking Fletcher. |

Dr. Fletcher is the nicest professor for 207. This course has a lot of content that is straight memorization but he lets you use cheat sheets and gives you plenty of resources to study from. After each lecture there are concept check quizzes which are questions that always end up on the midterms and the final. Attend office hours if you want answers to the exam study guides, or lecture content. He makes the classes entertaining and interactive, which is so different from other professors. He also records lectures so if you miss a few it's not a big deal. As long as you study in advance of the exams this class will be easy. |

Very nice professor! Lectures are very easy to understand if you pay attention. She records her lectures and posts her slides so that students can look back on whatever we missed, which is really helpful for when we review for exams. She had 3 exams and dropped the lowest one, so she keeps the best 2 exams. For exams, she lets us have a cheat sheet which is really helpful because it forces us to actually review the material. For the first 2 exams, she gave us opportunity to bring the score up by a couple of points. I always went to office hours and she would always be very helpful and breakdown anything I was confused about. She's probably my favorite professor! |

Fletcher's a good professor but I personally don't really like his class. He goes really into depth with everything, but a lot of the time its just way too much talking. My lectures were only 50 minutes long but they are packeddd with information and its kind of overwhelming. It's very very useful to have cheat sheets for the exams because it's usually a lot of material. Its easy to do well in this class as long as you are prepared for each exam. The homeworks and GAE's are all graded for completion and you have a lot of opportunities to bring your grade up with the online quizzes. He gives you 3 attempts for the concept quizzes after every lecture, but just one for the GAE quizzes before the GAE to make sure you watched the GAE lecture and material beforehand. He also drops the lowest exam, quiz, and homework. He's a really nice, engaging, and easy-going lecturer, but this class just wasn't for me. I do recommend him though. |

Nick is an engaging lecturer and is great at helping freshmen make the transition to college. He previously taught at MC so I think he has a lot of understanding regarding the difficult transition that freshmen have to make which is important for teaching 100 and 200 levels. I took 207 as a junior due to procrastination and it almost felt “too nice”. However, you are expected to stay on top of things in this class. There will usually be either one HW or one GAE (group activity) every week and there will be a concept check after every lecture. Be aware of this and always do your work. You do not want to lose easy points in this class! |
Nicholas Fletcher
BSCI207 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/03/2022 |
Dr. Fletcher is a super easy-going and overall kind professor who implements a lot of grading policies that are super beneficial for his students. With three classes per week, generally two of them are lectures and the other is a Group Active Engagement Session (GAE) that allows you to work with classmates on a worksheet, which is graded for completion. It's a great way to make a big class feel smaller. Before the GAEs, you have to do prep work and then take a quiz, which you only get one try on. After every class, you have a 1 point concept check to take, which is usually 3-5 questions, and you have three tries to get 100%. These are also easy ways to get points since you can go look back at the lecture slides and your notes. Dr. Fletcher also assigns homework approximately every two weeks that are graded on effort. They're usually not too hard. In regards to all of the assignments listed above, some of your worst scores get dropped since there are so many of them. So hypothetically, you could not do some of them and be completely fine since they'd be dropped. The exams are not too too hard if you study, but if you don't, I can bet they're difficult. This class builds off a lot of previous bio classes, so having prior knowledge can help you out a lot. Dr. Fletcher allows you to bring an equation sheet that serves as a cheat sheet that you can write on for every exam. Then, he drops your worst exam grade out of three. The only bad thing about this is that I don't think there's a curve at the end of the class since one gets dropped and the class average is a C on most exams. So, you really just need to study and get good exam grades to get an overall good grade in the class because you can't rely on a curve. The main reason I give Dr. Fletcher 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think his lectures can get a little boring. Some of the content of this class is interesting, and Dr. Fletcher's passion does make it more interesting, but some lectures are just really hard to sit through when it's just him talking. I think it would be more engaging if some videos or animations were shown so students could see the biological processes in action. Overall, I highly recommend Fletcher for BSCI207. I don't think you can find a better professor for it. |

Nick is a really fun and interesting lecturer. He encourages students to talk to each other and has weekly group activities. All of his lectures are on panopto with subtitles so if you miss something during class or couldn't hear something he said it isn't a problem. You can also bring a formula sheet to exams and write on it which is pretty great. If you take any other prof 4 207 you are making a mistake. |

Dr. Fletcher is a great professor. His assignments were pretty easy and you could go to his office hours where he's happy to answer any questions on the homework and basically gives you the answer. All of his assignments were very helpful in understanding the material. I will say there is a lot of material covered in this class and most of the questions on the exam are straight memorization and a few conceptual. I found the exams to be challenging but Dr. Fletcher is such an amazing professor so if you have any questions at all he'll be happy to help and explain things thoroughly. He also drops the lowest assignment and lowest test so if you're happy with your grade you don't need to take the last exam. Overall I would definitely recommend Fletcher for BSCI207 as it is a challenging class but he makes it as easy as possible. |

Dr. Fletcher might be the best teacher in all of UMD. I took his class Tuesdays and Thursdays, and since he was used to having MWF lectures the class pace was a little fast, but he is such a fantastic lecturer it didn't make class any more difficult. He posts lectures for review, too! He drops the lowest assignments and test grades. There are three tests and a final, but he makes it SO EASY to review for tests. The work isn't too difficult (and if you don't understand it, there were three TAs, two GSS leaders, and Fletcher himself to help) and the work is super helpful for studying. Textbooks are not necessary, but they are helpful. If you take the class seriously and make sure you understand most of the content, it is very easy to get an A. TAKE THIS PROF!!! |

Fletcher is a great professor who frankly made 207 a very easy class to get a good grade in. Lectures were easy to follow, and he also provided an additional resource that was kind of like an online 207 textbook that could be helpful sometimes. The work load was not heavy at all. Following every lecture would be a quick 2 point concept check which you get 3 attempts on, and every couple weeks there would be a homework assignment that was usually pretty challenging, but they were really just graded for effort, not accuracy. There would also be these in-class group assignments (GAEs) every other week which were probably the most annoying part of the class; we had to watch a lecture video and complete a quiz in preparation for it, and the assignment itself was done on one piece of paper for the whole group of 5 or 6 people, meaning not everyone really got to see what was going on. But again, these were only graded for completion so it wasn't much of an issue. There were 3 midterm exams which weren't that tough, considering we could make a one-sided cheat sheet paper to cram all our notes on. Same goes for the final, but the cheat sheet could actually be two-sided. He also dropped our lowest midterm grade, as well as the lowest grade in every assignment category. And there were some small extra credit questions on the exams too, so as long as you made a good cheat sheet, getting an A on them was not much of a challenge. Overall, Fletcher is a nice guy who is very approachable and passionate, and has a cute dog. |

Dr.Haag is a super nice guy. He is very understanding and tries to make things as interesting as possible. However, the class SUCKS. BSCI207 is one of the worst classes I've ever taken and I would avoid it at all costs unless you need it for a prerequisite (like I did). The material is super boring, doesn't connect from one lecture to another, and is a jumble of things you will learn in other bio, physics, chem, and plant science classes. Dr.Haag's exams are hard to understand and are always looking for more than just memorization. Because of the type of material, it's super difficult to know what they're looking for. The TAs also aren't much help so you're kind of screwed. ALSO : 4 MIDTERMS AND A FINAL, MIDTERM 4 WAS ON THE MONDAY OF EXAM WEEK AND THE FINAL WAS ON THAT SATURDAY. Avoid at all costs!!! |

Dr. Fletcher was a real highlight for me during my time at UMD. His class style is clear and engaging, making taking on such large chunks of information very doable. Learning expectations were clear and success in his class is viable given some effort. Outstanding professor and I would recommend him to anyone. |

Dr. Fletcher is seriously the best I love him so much. The material in this course can be very difficult as its a very in depth explanation of many concepts, but Dr. Fletcher gives you all the tools to succeed. For every exam he allowed an entire sheet of paper for cheat sheet notes which was very helpful. He's super understanding and knows exactly what he's talking about and how to explain it. Seriously take him for any class you can, you won't regret it. |

I feel that he is a nice guy, but is awful at lecturing. He always plans to get through a 30-40 ppt slide in 50 mins when we only end up actually getting through about 15 of the slides (then he expects us to just know the rest for the test). Sometimes he will see that we have 5 minutes left in class and 20 more slides to get through, so he'll quickly flip through the last slides. Not only that but he is just all over the place, the slides most times are disorganized and he will talk about the least important thing for 10 minutes. His exams are so hard and he purposely tries to make the questions difficult. The averages were 50-60 range constantly, even when he let us use an 8x11 page front and back for the test. Also we had exam 4, 5 days before the final.... Would NOTTTTTT recommend him to anyone |

He is a really nice guy, but this course is not it. The material literally does not correlate with anything. One lecture we are talking about the kidney and the next class we are talking about evolutionary trends of bacteria. It made studying really hard because we had to remember every single detail. His tests are also really hard as well - but you eventually become better at taking them. Also, I don't think he curves, so there is that. Also, Dr.Haag is very enthusiastic about his work and all that he goes on tangents that make no sense and it's hard to tell what his tangent is and what the material is. Another thing that annoyed me so much is that the lecture slides for one lecture are about 50 slides. He takes 40 minutes going through 10-15 slides and then rushes the last 35-40 slides. It was really frustrating since we were still held accountable to know all of the material that he just rushed through. Overall, nice guy but terrible course - avoid at all costs. |

I would agree with all the other 5 star reviews, this man deserves nothing less than a 5/5 on any teacher rating platform. He's literally so understanding and tries to make the loads of information as manageable as possible. He's funny and will tell you the crazy things about his life and he is very accessible outside of class. Cannot stress this enough, TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN. I would write more about what his grading is like but I'm too lazy, just look at the review from 12/01/2021 for a breakdown. |

Best professor for BSCI207. He is the most understanding and flexible professor there is. My friend has the other professor for this class and failed. There’s a lot of assignments to help boost your grade. One exam gets dropped. He has concept checks after every lecture to help ensure you understand the material. He allows cheat sheets for exams with equations etc. He is also kind and funny. He has a cute dog. He makes class fun and there’s a lot of hands on activities. 10/10 recommend. |

If I could go past 5 stars, I would. He may be one of the most understanding, kind, and humorous professors I have had. He is extremely organized, his page is easy to follow, and he is so aware of the difficulty of the class. He provides his students with literally everything you will need to succeed. We have homeworks that are graded on effort, GAE quizzes and concept checks that are sometimes directly questions that are put on the exam, and he allows a cheat sheet during exams. You really can't ask for anything more from a professor, let alone a biology/STEM prof. He is amazing and I wish I could take more classes with him! |

Dr Haag does the best he can with this terrible course. I would like to give him a poor review, but truly I think the course is the problem and not the professor. I received over a 96% average in both 161 and 171, and I am currently hoping to end with a B- in this class (207). The material covered is literally all over the place, one days information usually has nothing to do with the next. This makes it hard to retain small details and study because the topics contained on one single test can be so vastly different from each other (hard to study fungi and kidneys at the same time..). Personally, I recommend just staying away from this course. It's way too much random information and minuscule details thrown into one course. That being said, If you do need to take it for a major requirement, Haag is not a bad choice. He truly wants his students to do well and he adjusts each exam according to performance on the last exam. The averages of our exams have all been around C-, increasing with each exam. He also recently adjusted the exams so that a "cheat sheet" can be used, which is very considerate of him but it only boosted the average exam grade about 5 percent because again, the material is just so all over the place. Just be prepared to have an overwhelming amount of material covered, regardless of the professor. Take advantage of how helpful and caring Dr Haag is by asking questions and asking for help, there's also GSS sessions that are very helpful. |

BSCI207 Expecting an A Anonymous 10/29/2021 |
Dr. Haag is a very nice guy, and does his best to be engaging and interesting with material that is not necessarily that cool. Personally, I don't see the value in this class especially since a lot of it is just detailed AP Biology and concepts that most people should already be familiar with, just in a really detailed format. If you want this class as transfer credit, it counts as general bio 2 in most other universities, which emphasizes what I said before. Whenever Dr. Haag does what he calls "tours of organisms" the class gets confusing since we don't know what we're supposed to be taking notes on and what we actually have to know, since he just seems to be presenting basically fun facts of each organism. For these tours, I would recommend that you take notes on the key concepts that make them different from other organisms instead of memorizing every single feature of each organism, since test questions won't ask you about random specific information, rather they will ask you about how it is relevant and why it matters. All that being said, however, the class itself is not difficult provided you are willing to put in more than the bare minimum amount of effort to get by, which can be said for all biology classes at any university. The class is intuition-based provided you have memorized the key concepts needed to be able to use intuition. As a study technique, I HIGHLY recommend reviewing for exams through the GSS sessions and going through every lecture and making sure you can understand each slide and put it in your own words. There are no past exams, at least not for our semester, so the GSS leader makes practice exam questions and summarizes each of the lectures, so definitely go to those. He allows you to drop a test at the end of the semester (even though I probably won't need to) which can be hugely impactful for people that failed the first test and needed to get the hang of things and the way the class is taught. There are 4 units and 1 exam per unit, the exams are fair in length and difficulty. He even adjusts the length and difficulty of exams based on performance of his students on previous exams. Personally, I think Dr. Haag is doing a good job at teaching all this material in a way that keeps us interested and engaged. Whenever he geeks out over concepts, it makes the class a lot more interesting and even though we don't always get through the material in lecture, part of the responsibility of reviewing lecture notes afterwards lays on us students. But, I will say that having a class longer than 50 minutes would probably be better so that we can actually fully get through the material and not have to rush through parts of the lecture just to finish on time. Dr. Haag is very responsive to emails and is very helpful as long as you are willing to take initiative and reach out to him. Overall, pretty good class as long as you put in the effort, good professor, and great person. |

Definitely inspired me to continue down the biology track. TAKE HIS CLASS!!! AND you get a cheat sheet on every exam!! |

I am currently taking this course with Dr. Haag, and it sucks. He talks really fast and doesn't know how to answer a question in less than 3 sentences, overcomplicating absolutely everything. Classes are 50 minutes and he expects us to go through a 40 slide powerpoint, which we of course never do because he talks so much, so he just speeds up and skips things that turn out to be important. He gives absolutely no feedback on what stuff is going to be on the exam, which makes studying nearly impossible because he gives so much information. Also - if he says 'this is not AP Bio, you're not supposed to memorize information by understand greater concepts' don't listen. He has said that twice now and both times he asks extremely (unnecessary) specific questions that there is literally no greater purpose to memorizing. Half the time, he would tell is that he doesn't know the information because it wasn't his specialty, which 1) is extremely annoying because why should I have to know it but not you, and 2) makes it extremely clear to me this is too much information for 1 class. In the past I have loved my BSCI classes, but this class makes me want to cry and fall asleep at the same time, every single time. |

Wow, probably the best teacher I've had this semester and that's even though it was mostly asynchronous. It's definitely not an easy class, you really have to work for it if you want a good grade. I don't mean that there were a lot of difficult assignments, I mean that the material itself is quite difficult, but I learned so much from it. She has each lecture (approx 50 minutes) broken up into 3-4 different smaller videos which is so awesome. It makes it so much easier do digest and absorb the material because of the smaller bite sized lectures. Dr. Karen is also just very nice. She gets back to emails relatively quickly, and she also is just a very sweet person. I really enjoyed the class and definitely recommend it. I've heard that the BSCI207 teachers are generally very good, but Dr. Karen was just awesome. |

You need to teach yourself in this class. Going to class seemed like a waste of my time, because Dr. Shapiro would go too fast for me to read (let alone write anything) from the slides. His slides contain all the information for the exams, and he focuses heavily on diagrams for exams. If you study the slides, you will do fine on the tests. There are four exams and a final, but he drops one of the exams. I can tell he cares about his students a lot and wants us to succeed, but I just wish his lectures were more interesting and he organized the topics a little better. |

I took BSCI207 with Dr. Karen and with Dr. Eric Haag and I already aired my grievances about the class itself over in Dr. Eric's reviews but I just wanted to drop by here and say that Dr. Karen can teach neurons really darn well. I properly understood one unit in this whole class and it was the neurons unit and it was her doing. One review says her slides are long and this is true, I wish she just had more classes to teach her stuff. But she makes the slides so you can understand them when you go back through them, which is nice because that's pretty much the only way to study for this class from the fiery depths. Dr. Karen is very nice and I think a good teacher when she's not forced to teach the 207 material.Overall not a bad professor to have a course with. |

BSCI207 Expecting an A Anonymous 01/02/2016 |
I feel sort of bad giving Dr. Eric a bad review because he's genuinely a very nice person but just... this class was hell. It was horrible. It was disorganized and totally incomprehensible. The sheer quantity of material that gets covered is insane. I want to be mad at the professors for it but I don't think it's entirely their fault I think it's just a bad course. This information shouldn't be taught all in one class. You learn nothing because you can't organize it, and studying sucks and is inefficient. Two professor's teach this class because they can't get one person who knows everything that's covered. You can ask a question about some of the material to one professor and they won't know the answer because it's the other professor's specialization. Can I give UMD a bad review for making this a class?? I love biology. It's been my favorite since I was 3 years old and I'm 100% solid in my major choice but this class made me hate it for the first time ever. I dreaded learning bio and studying bio. Poor Dr. Eric, guy probably did the best he could with the shit material. That being said, we did group projects which I hardly found helpful beyond finding people to complain about the class with. I feel like they just need work, they were (like most of the class) badly organized and confusing and the point behind them was never clear until you re-read them 3 times alone while studying. |
Todd Cooke
BSCI207 Expecting an A- milk 06/09/2014 |
Like others, I'll preface this review by saying that BSCI207 just inherently sucks to begin with. Cooke is a very nice man but he couldn't make that class interesting if he tried (and he 100% does try). That being said, I never understood why some people revere him, because I hated taking this class with him. Cons: Cooke's approach to teaching is learning "general concepts" instead of rote memorization, but to be perfectly honest this approach made learning relatively easy material hell. There's no sense of organization to his lectures, so you have to sort through his PDFs. If you take notes on your laptop like I do (OneNote, MS Word), you have to put in an insane amount of time making them outside of class. Most disorganized powerpoints you will ever see. He uploads his lectures as PDFs instead of powerpoints, so you can't see any of the diagrams because they've shrunk by a factor of 10. Useless. Exams are 99% short answer writing prompts (the other 1% consists of phylogeny trees, completing picture diagrams, etc.) and the answer key is made so that the TAs look for buzz words. So even if your answer is technically right, you won't get credit because you didn't have the word they were looking for. Like someone else said, I never figured out how to study for them. In terms of difficulty, they're like 4-7 on a scale of 1-10. Don't cram. Pros: He drops 1 exam and 1 homework. Homeworks are easy, and end up saving your grade because he weights them so heavily. The final was actually pretty easy too. It's 60% new material and 40% cumulative, and he makes the 40% very general so you don't have to study for it too much. Studying old exams helps a little, but not that much, because he doesn't reuse questions often. He accepts regrade requests, looks it over himself, and will only regrade the specific questions that you requested so it's impossible for you to lose points. Definitely do regrades. He genuinely tried to engage us with interactive in-class worksheets, which essentially translated to a free class period. He goes to his own review sessions - they're 2 hours long, TAs lead for 1 hour and Cooke leads for the second hour. He holds 2 of them before every test. Some sessions were helpful, some weren't. For ILS kids: your 207 TAs will most likely be in ILS as well, and are probably your friends, so you have connections whoop-de-doo good for you. Basically this class gave me the most grief over the semester. Cooke is probably the best teacher you're going to get for this class, even though he's not that great either, so it's all about knowing HOW to take this course instead of who you take it with. So yeah take Cooke but be warned the class is among the most annoying you'll ever take. |

His slides would have little to no valuable information for the tests on them and it was impossible to use them to help you study and do homework. He was very unapproachable and was extremely unhelpful whenever you asked him a question. While I would say that it's important for you to know how to apply and connect information without memorization, this class is a HEAVY memorization class, and if they tell you otherwise, do not believe them. True/False questions on each exam nearly killed my grade, because they were straightforward answers and I was thinking abstractly. STICK TO THE FACTS. |

So, while the content and lectures are COMPLETELY relevant to the field... The exams were slightly unfair to those of us ahead of the game in connecting things abstractly. They comprised mostly of multiple T/F questions, which is like a memorization course. Thus, when he says that this is not a memorization course, do not believe him. He's a wonderful professor who knows how to relay the material well, but the exams were horrendously memorization-based. |

I took this class in fall 2011 with Delwiche AND Schultz, so I am reviewing both of them together (and cross-posting this to Schultz's page). I have to disagree with most of the other reviews on this page. I think people here are just bitter that the class was difficult and covered a large volume of information. I think it acts as a weed-out course for a lot of prospective bio majors. Grades also tended to be low percentage-wise, which can be discouraging, but letter grades are assigned according to class rank and people in my class only needed about a 76 to get an A. There is also a drop-one policy for midterm exams and quizzes, which can help quite a bit Delwiche and Schultz are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic professors (Schultz especially is a funny dude). Contrary to what they say, however, you DO need to memorize some specific information and diagrams (evolutionary processes of certain body parts and organisms, phylogenetic tree, etc.) in addition to understanding overarching concepts. I highly recommend reading the textbook chapters before each lecture and attending every class, but that's the exact same advice I give for most courses. Make sure to pay attention and write down any diagrams or explanations that aren't on the slides. Also be sure to review BSCI105 and 106 information on their review guide at the beginning of the semester since there is a full-length preliminary exam very early in the semester. It's scaled to be worth only 10 points, but it helps to start the semester with a good grade and a solid foundation in gen bio. Bottom line: it is possible to do well in this class if you're willing to put the time and work in. |

I took Dr. Kent's BSCI207 course with Dr. Haag this Spring 2012. It was an extremely interesting course, with a large focus on macrobiological concepts like physiology and biochemistry. It is a great introduction to upper level biology courses. When I first signed up, I was a little apprehensive because I heard a lot of bad things about BSCI207, about how it was hard and uninteresting. But in actuality, it is very relevant to anyone who wants to pursue a degree in Biology. The main thing is to GO TO LECTURE. You will not do well on the exams if you don't go to lecture!! The slides contain minimal amounts of information. All the tested material were things that Dr. Kent/Dr. Haag explained in lecture. The exams are fair. They're not easy, you actually have to study a lot for them. Dr. Kent is an outstanding lecturer and takes the time to drive home important points of the topic. Tough, but enjoyable class. |

I honestly liked Cooke, but the class is just way to boring and useless. Cooke loves this 207 class, because I mean, he created the class.. This is probably the worst Bio class you will ever have to take, but it is so doable with Cooke and Jensen. Just study the old exams and memorize the answers. You can also look at the HLSC207 version from your honors friends. They are identical. In the end, Cooke is much more interesting and interactive than Jensen. This class was bearable with Cooke. He was not very familiar with the course material (even admits he teaches himself the material the night before a lecture). He is a very nice guy but not very knowledgeable. But I can't bash him for that because he probably didn't want to teach this awful course. Haag is a developmental biologist who teaches upper level bsci classes. Haag could be funny sometimes and he is a nice guy. I am sure he is a much better professor when teaching an area of his expertise as opposed to bsci207 which he has never taught before. I really didn't want to take this class but I had to because it is a requirement for my major. Unfortunately, I was stuck with Dr. Kent and Dr. Haag for Spring 2012. By far one of the WORST bio classes I have taken at this university. All the material is random BS which makes you want to pull your hair out. They test you on the most pointless topics (3 exams, lowest dropped, weekly quizzes -10 total). Final exam is cumulative with a strong emphasis on the most recent material. All the exams are about 30 true false, 10 multiple choice and short answer. Although Kent is very passionate about the subject material, he is a very difficult person to deal with. He really wants to fail his students (which he has expressed he doesn't mind doing). Just an old and cranky old man who does nothing but sip his coffee while lecturing you. I took him with Higgins last Spring. Kent was pretty good. You can tell he enjoyed the material since he was very enthusiastic during lectures. His enthusiasm made it easier to pay attention. His tests were hard, but that's only because BSCI207 is designed to filter people out. He, like Higgins, pointed out specific concepts that were definitely going to be on exams so the class generally knew what to focus on. Overall, I enjoyed his teaching. I thought Professor Higgins was great. I took 207 last spring with him and Professor Kent. I really enjoyed the way he taught the class. He was very engaging during lectures and he would always point out important concepts that would show up on the tests. Tests were multiple-multiple choice and were definitely challenging. If you decide to take Higgins, make sure you always go to lecture! Like others have said, a majority of the test material stems from his own words and NOT the powerpoint slides. I do understand how some people perceive his personality as "rude", as he can come off that way sometimes. But, I think it's just his sense of humor and as long as you aren't emotionally-unstable or have incredibly low self-esteem, you should be fine. In all honesty, I feel like I learned a lot from this class and from his teaching. BSCI207 is designed to filter out people, so it's going to be hard regardless of who you take. |

i don't even know where to begin with this! there were just so many things that bothered me about bsci207 with delwiche and shultz. definitely not the best introduction to college classes, that's for sure. As you will find out, bsci207 is the bane of an intro bio majors existence, especially with delwiche and shultz who teach off of a whim. they essentially tailor their class to whatever they want to teach, so it ends up sbeing a disorganized mess of random, miniscule facts and large concepts. This semester with 207, delwiche and shultz decided to hand out eleven pop quizzes, and while only five points each, proved to be major stressors. Delwiche is big on thinking about a concept and making inferences based on the information given (mixed in with a few completely random facts here and there of course). Shultz is very big on memorize these random details here, some equations there. this made it difficult to figure out what would be on quizzes and exams, which by the way were very stressful. typically i did not work in this class, at all, except for the week before exams. there were only two exams and the final, and thank goodness one midterm is dropped. I would cram a bunch of information in my head the week before a midterm with the full intention of forgetting it right after, because of how useless it was. to do well without cramming would mean paying attention to delwiche and shultz's monotonous voices for an hour and fifteen minutes. i went to lecture for the quizzes but never, ever paid attention, which isn't really their fault as much as my sheer inability to pay attention to people talking about algae and biomechanics for so long. while i'm sure they are cool people to talk to out of class, I just had a bad experience with this class. I think I got an A because of the humongous curve (75 and up was an A). The TA's weren't much help either, although they were very nice. Avoid taking delwiche and shultz if you have trouble paying attention in lecture, or never learned how to think about biology. at least it's a good way to bond with friends, bsci207 has become a running join between my friends and me. |

This was my first bio class coming into college. I initially thought that bio would be my easiest class, since it was purely memorization. I was so wrong though. BSCI207 with Delwiche and Schultz turned out to be my most difficult class. They emphasized so much in the beginning of the semester that "memorizing everything will not help you" and that instead you must "focus on the broad concepts." I took their words too literally, and didn't review much of the material for the first midterm. After taking that exam, I realized they expect you to memorize EVERYTHING they say in LECTURE. Basically, Delwiche and Schultz orient the class on their own interests, with Delwiche lecturing on plants and botany, while Schultz takes over every few weeks lecturing on a totally unrelated topic of biomechanics. To me, these topics ambiguously fell under the class topic of "organismal biology" and it was very frustrating that they did very little to show the relationship of the topics we learned (we started with plants, jumped to viruses, then random bio-astronomy, back to plants, then metazoa [took students forever to realize metazoans are organisms--Shultz should have just straight up told us], to plants againnnn, then the biomechanics of an muscle, finishing with numerous other random topics I cannot remember). To do well in this course, pay attention in lecture. If you can't focus for the full hour 15 minutes, record the lecture and review it with the powerpoints they post on BB. If you don't have lecture recordings to go with it, the powerpoints are rather useless. Also, do all the past exams they post. And most importantly, memorize everything. |

This class sucked. Its a combo of 105 and 106 but more in depth and viewing information a different way and if you're really not interested in evolution and phylogenies then get ready to be pissed after every exam! Delwiche was an okay lecturer but he kinda acts like a jerk.. and Schultz is a worse lecturer but really nice (at times). The exams are ridiculously hard with MC choices like (2 of the above) and (none of the above) so that sucked. And the pop quizzes... what college course has pop quizzes?! Lol anyway avoid these 2 professors if you can... |

Higgins class is hard because its all about concepts. You can not just memorize the slides and expect to do well in the class, you have to understand it. You also have to go to class because for most lectures the power points are mostly filled with graphs and pictures. Overall I think Higgins is a good teacher because he does not read from the slides and actually explain stuff really well. |

I had this class with HIggins/Haag/Carleton. I like Higgins, but the class is hard. Haag was the easiest of the three. Higgins is a cool guy but the class is a lot of work. The tests are really specific based on the lecture, so go to class. Reading the book helps a little bit too. |

This is more of a review for the entire course of BSCI207 with Delwiche AND Shultz... So...snidely insulting a student's intelligence after he asked a question during lecture in front of the whole class made me lose a ton of respect for professor Shultz, though he is the more effective lecturer. I admit, it was kinda funny, but totally inappropriate and unprofessional in that setting. It made him seem a lot less approachable, at least to me. Delwiche seems like the more approachable professor for students who have questions or concerns. Shultz's lecture slides conveyed the course material better than Delwiche's lecture slides. And at times, I did not entirely understand the main points of Delwiche's lectures because it was not that explicit (though the plant unit slides were fine). The tests were okay, and showed that one must know a lot more than just rote memorization of facts in order to be successful. You must be able to logically synthesize the information presented to you, and this is indeed an important skill that they emphasized during the course. I honestly didn't open the print textbook that much for this course, though I used the online textbook, and did the chapter outline quizzes, etc but that's just my style. For the "pop" quizzes, you must know the little details covered in the recent lecture. Even if you wrote it down, always review your notes after lecture or right before lecture, because you probably forgot what you wrote down! Happened to me a lot, frustrating. This was my 1st biology course taken at UMD, so I don't know who/what to compare this to in terms of biology professors/lecturers/courses. They seemed just alright, and the tests seemed fairly difficult I guess. I think an average student (who goes to all the lectures and takes some notes) can pass with a mid to low B. |

I read most of the reviews on here and I just think most of it is really biased. So I will be as unbiased as possible when I am rating Dr.Delwiche and Dr.Shultz. BSCI207 is a really tough class. The entire class is about the evolutionary past, so you can't really apply the knowledge you learned until you get the present organisms (which also explains why it's 3 credits because you can't really have a lab about evolution). Dr.Delwiche and Dr.Shultz taught this class. Dr.Delwiche taught plants and microorganisms while Dr.Shultz taught metazoans. They are mediocre instructors. They aren't the greatest, but they aren't bad so you can't really complain that they are bad teachers. The reason why I think the ratings on this page are biased is because of the difficulty of the class. It doesn't matter what professor you take BSCI207 with because either way it will be very difficult. I don't know how other professors does it but Delwiche and Shultz base your grade on a class ranking system. The top of the class gets A's while the bottom part of the class fails. There are pros and cons behind this. Pros are that students are able to get good grades. The exams are very difficult...so it will almost be impossible to get an A by total percentage wise (assuming 90% is an A). The exams are so difficult that 76%+ = A, 70% - 76% = B, 62-70% = C, etc. The cons are that some students are bound to fail. If you are good at biology and have a lot of confidence that you can do well in this course, then Delwiche/Shultz is for you because of the class ranking system. If you are not confident, I would recommend taking with a professor that uses the percent-grading system. I really believe that the bad ratings on this page are because of the ranking system. I can see why the ranking system can frustrate a lot of people. However, if this class used the percentage system, no one would get A's. In conclusion: -Delwiche and Shultz are decent instructors -This class is really really hard -The grade you get is based on your rank # in the class -The textbook doesn't really help, but you might as well get it because it's $5-$10 online -DON'T purchase MasteringBiology with the textbook because it's useless (it's a complete waste of money) -Delwiche and Shultz are good people, personality wise -Exams are really really difficult, you need to study a lot for it, probably more than any of your other classes -The exams require you to think and apply everything you learned about biology -BSCI207 doesn't ask you "what" questions, they only ask you "why" and "how" questions so you REALLY have to know the concepts by heart -This class is PURE concept, not memorization -Biology application is this entire course |

Took BSCI207 with Dr. Delwiche in Fall 2010 - it was my second time taking it. I'm a senior with a 3.6 GPA so I'm telling you honestly that this is a difficult course. Don't blame the professors. I took it the first time with Dr. Cooke and Dr. Jensen because I've heard so many good things about Dr. Jensen, but the material was exactly the same and presented in exactly the same way (hell, some of the lecture slides were even identical!). Dr. Delwiche is a great guy, always fun to talk to and willing to help you. He's really intelligent, also. One of the more interesting "plant" guys that I've met. |

Let me start by saying that Dr. Higgins is one of my favorite biology professors on campus. I had 207 with him and Dr. Kent. For a 200-lv bio class, it is difficult. Make sure you understand everything on the lectures because that is what you will be tested on. Although he might be intimidating at first, Dr. H really wants you to do well and is very receptive of questions. He is funny and really makes you understand the material. Also, he often drops major hints for exams during lectures so ALWAYS go. I dont even think an A is possible without attending class. A lot of people complain about 207. I actually found it to be very enjoyable. Since I seem to click with his teaching style, I ended up having 440 with Dr. H as well. This was my favorite bio class, hands down. The reason being that the material is very interesting. Class starts with the nervous system, then move on to cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and ends with digestive. This is the kind of cool stuff that you will learn in med school. Additionally, he really stressed the pharmacology aspect of the course. So expect to understand how different drugs interact across multiple systems. He love up/downs and graphs on exams. Major concepts that he repeats will almost always show up later. This class is not easy but put in the work and you'll be fine. If you want to enjoy lectures and really learn bio, go with Dr. Higgins. |

I would rate his lectures 10/10 on a scale of boring. The only reason I went to class was so I didn't have to download the slides online. And even then I spent most of it falling asleep. Sometime mid-semester I figured out that it helps to stay awake if you count how many times he says "essentially" during his lectures. Once I got to 112 in a 50-min lecture. Good times. |

Higgins teaches based off of powerpoints. You can expect that the tests will be based mainly off of lecture powerpoints. However, he skips over slides that contain content that will be on the exams. He likes to do class demonstrations (involving guys holding hands) and tries to interact with the class so he does a great job at keeping everyone awake. There's a lot of content, so DON'T FALL BEHIND. It'll be a hell of a time catching up. Ask a lot of questions, study as you go, and you should be okay He has a slight curve at the end of the year. I thought I would end up with an 87 or so, but I got an A. You can also get a few bonus points for filling out the same survey both at the beginning AND at the end of the year. |

Depending on your background, Bio III isn't THAT hard. If you've taken Bio II at college, you don't really learn much in this class. It's organized to emphasize on the little details that may have been overlooked in Bio I/II. Interesting, but useless. Dr. Higgins is definitely not approachable, but I don't mean that he's a monster. Just bad dad. He'll teach you what you need to know in way that makes you want to hate him. He seems to care about his students, but doesn't like to show it. He hints at test questions and test you on them. So, his test are pretty straightforward. Whatever he repeats in class about, he'll test you on. But you'll have to study somewhat. Class test average: C. |

Let me start by saying that this is an extremely difficult course! But it can be managed IF and only IF you take the necessary steps to prepare yourself and succeed. The exams for the Higgins/Kent class are mostly multiple choice and True/False with some short answer Q's. As someone who sucks at multiple choice exams, this class was hell...I'm telling you RIGHT NOW, if you must take this class: 1. You MUST go to lecture. Don't think you can just rely on the slides posted online. They are often lots of pictures for which you needed to be in class to understand what the significance of them or explanation was. Plus, he often says plainly what will be on the exams and/or what to completely ignore. 2. Grab a few classmates and form a study group IMMEDIATELY. This is coming from someone who has historically resisted doing the study group thing. For this class, it's an absolute necessity. 3. The textbook IS kind of helpful to solidify concepts, but I wouldn't say the tests are based on the book as much as what is covered in lecture! In other words, they don't follow the textbook, exactly, it's used as more of a reference book. 4. Take advantage of one-on-one time with the professors (or when there's only a few students). For example they offered to meet with students in the stamp food court an hour before class to answer questions/go over material. When I went I found it helpful because it was a couple days before an exam, and he gave me some points to focus on. Those things ended up making up a significant amount of points on the exam. They are there to help you. Use them! Lots of these suggestions seem kind of inconvenient and maybe even annoying to have to do to do well in this class. Trust me. I know. But the fact is, you're gonna be much better off and a lot less stressed. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and listen to me. I beg you. |

BSCI207 is an extremely hard course and not many science majors are aware of how hard it actually is until they take it. I can honestly say this class is far worse than Orgo I because it was taught by Higgins. Higgins is a great man and is an excellent professor who gives the VERY BEST examples. HOWEVER, his exams are IMPOSSIBLE and he is not very helpful. The only time Higgins will be available to help is via blackboard and the five mins after class because I swear this man does not believe in office hours. I put my life into this class, formed a study group, and went to office hours almost every week. I received a 59% on the final and broke down into tears because I could of sworn I was going to fail. He makes you believe you are failing the whole entire semester and when he curves, you dont know whether to send him a thank u card or curse him. Dr. Jeffrey cotaught this class and while he is boring, he does try to be funny. Honestly, I liked Dr. Jeffrey way better because his material was proportional to what was given on the exams. If you have to take this class with Higgins and Jeffrey coteaches, make sure you secure an A with Jeffrey's exams and try your very best with Higgins. |

Delwiche is the devil. He comes in a pleasant disguise, but don't be fooled by his excitement about algae. He will try to fail you just as well. Delwiche and Schultz co-taught this class and neither one of them knew what they were talking about. Both Delwiche and Schultz are obsessed with their research and they don't know how to explain anything other than that. Schultz introduced himself by talking about spider penises and how they give "nuptial gifts" to the females. This was the only lecture that I ever understood from the class. Seriously, if you need to take this class don't EVER try taking it with either Delwiche or Schultz. They ended up using a bell curve, so in order to get a B in the class you needed higher than an 80%. They were not sympathetic at all. They would give no points back on tests, even if you provided a perfect explanation on essay questions. They were the worst!!! |

Professor Higgins is an absolutely horrible teacher and his class was a miserable experience. I have never been so fed up with and disappointed with a professor's attitude and teaching style. He does not care about his students and it shows in his lectures and exams. First of all, his lectures and PowerPoints are a complete joke. On average they are 60 slides long (as opposed to 12-15 that Prof. Jeffrey used to convey equal information) and are cluttered with useless pictures, duplicate slides, and information that just make learning the material harder. The lectures are rife with spelling mistakes and contradictions and I even had a lecture that included final exam information for a class he had taught years ago. It just shows how careless he is in preparing for class and how little he refines his lectures year to year. What bothered me the most however, was his tendency to jump back and forth from slide to slide during class. I recorded many of his lectures and used them to study for exams and when he did this, my notes would not match up with his PowerPoints and this was extremely frustrating. Aside from his poor lectures, he came off as very crass, brash, and unapproachable. Some students may enjoy his sense of humor but I thought it got in the way of his teaching and was sick of him within a few classes. His exams were noticeably harder than his co-teacher's (Dr. Jeffrey). They required us to know the material and apply it at a level we never went over in class. They were poorly written and averages were very low. Had it not been for Jeffrey's tests, I doubt I would've gotten an A in this class. I strongly discourage anyone from taking this class with Higgins. Expect to be confused by his lectures and read a whole lot from the book. I'm glad I got out of this class with an A and never have to take a class with this man again. |

If you introduce yourself to him, at all, he WILL remember you, not only by face but by name. If you ever wander up to his office looking for help, as I did on only a few occasions, he'll set aside whatever he is working on and meet with you, and answer any questions you may have. He is passionate about his research, and his lectures are engaging. I can't stress enough, if you are having trouble in the class: -A) download the lecture slides, and read the corresponding sections of the book as you go through them. They will provide a much more detailed description than one can reasonably fit on a lecture slide. -B) If you're having problems in the class, talk to Delwiche. He is more than reasonable and will do everything in his power to help you. In conclusion: hard class? yes. Great professor? that too |

It seem like you have to take notes and read the book and even that won't mean you will do good on the exam. The lectures are so boring I would fall asleep, but I like talking to the guy next to me who feels the same way and we get through it somehow. The lectures don't entertain me enough; I need lots of sounds, colors, motion and stuff to keep my interest. One of the most ridiculous classes I’ve ever taken. Be prepared to take extremely detailed notes (and that’s not going to be enough- put in A LOT of extra study time). I would suggest probably recording the lectures (I didn’t do this but thinking back, it may have helped). This class was co-taught (partly by Prof. Delwiche and Prof. Jeffrey Shultz). Their teaching styles are different- Prof. Shultz’s lectures come straight out of the book, are monotonous, and boring. You will be tempted to fall asleep (during either one’s lectures). At times, the material we learned didn’t seem to connect (it seemed like we were jumping around). Exams are random, ridiculous, and (most often) unfair. There are 4 undergrad TAs and 1 grad school TA. This time around, they were absolutely no help and tended to contradict each other. They’ve either forgotten the material or just don’t know it. There is no discussion section for this class; the TAs hold review sessions throughout the week. Random topics that were never fully discussed in class ALWAYS come up on the exams and are worth a lot of points. Reading the textbook thoroughly will help but does not guarantee in any way that you will do well on the exams. This class will be horrible no matter who you take it with, but please, take another professor. Occasionally these two have condescending attitudes when you ask them questions. At times, you wonder whether they really want their students to do well. |

Jeffery is pretty straight-foward. His teaching style is very like high school; it is all powerpoint and reading off it. He is pretty monotone, but is interested in the subject. The class covers much of what AP Bio did in high school but a little more in depth. The thing is, the exams are pretty specific. Examples that he goes through in class shows up on the exam. I put little effort and got a B. I personally don't think 207 should be pre-req/requirement for the bio major. But if you have a choice, Jeffery is a good choice considering the other professors. |

Let me preface this by saying that the class itself, and the material incorporated into it, is AWFUL. Dr. Cooke co-taught this class with Dr. Jeff Jensen, and he was certainly the more engaging of the teachers. His lectures are fairly clear and to the point, and his notes aren't annoying fill-in-the-blank like Dr. Jensen's are. Take these professors if you're willing to do a LOT of phylogeny and a LOT of "hypothetical application" of the material that you memorize. Yes, memorize, not learn. It's all evolution, phylogenies, and theories, and on exams, you'll be expected to take all of this and propose several plausible hypotheses as to animals' evolution and ancestors, etc. Really, the entire thing was awful but if I had to choose the better professor of the pair, it would be Dr. Cooke! |

Let me start by saying this, this class is a lot of material, and a lot of it comes from all over the place. Higgins does mostly the physiology, and Kent does the Nature/environmental stuff. I personally didn't like the structure of the course too much, and I feel like it shouldn't be a pre-requisite for bio majors(Anantomy would be much more useful). Their grading system was a bit odd, but from what I heard around the class if you had something around an 85, you got an A, if you had above a 76 or 77 you had a B, and then I'm not sure what the C and D marks were. Overall, I thought they both did the best they could with the structure of the 207 course, and provided students with enough material to go over to do well enough on the exams. It wasn't a nightmare but it wasn't a walk in the park either. If you study, you should be ok. |

Well. You won't expect a good review from me. Dr. Delwiche starts off in the beginning of the semester taking pictures of his class. He is more of a photographer than a professor. His powerpoints are absolutely trash. They are just pictures with little or no text. You literally have to record his lectures because there is no way in hell that you write that fast. His exams are irrelevant. It is like a giant tank water with thousand of balls with words on it, and he has manatees swimming around in it and push the balls into an opening. In that opening, the balls falls in a lottery type machine and the words form a sentence. That's what a typical Delwiche exam question looks like. |

The material he teaches is really interesting and he tells you in class what you do and don't need to know on his exams. He is only intimidating if you make him intimidating. You can tell he loves teaching-- and he's really good at it. But he can be pretty arrogant- but that's only because he's insanely smart and has really established himself as a research biologist. This class was just crazy. Everything that one would expect to be on the exam, the kind of stuff that you should come away with from a class like this was not there. Instead, look forward to memorizing every random fact that comes up in lecture. As tempted as you may be DO NOT FALL ASLEEP! Whatever little fact you may miss in that 5 minute nap may very well make a free response worth hefty points on the exam. Also, work on writing a lot in only a few minutes. Most of the exam is free response, and sometimes even what seems like the most comprehensive explanation to you may not get you full points on the question. The only other graded work beyond the exam was a museum assignment, which was actually graded pretty harshly, so do it well. Take very copious notes during class, or record lectures, since the PowerPoints, tho available, are not ever good enough to study from as they are simply pictures. Wikipedia becomes a good friend to look up stuff like formulas that are not fully explained in class, but that WILL COME UP IN THE EXAM, you can count on it. Nothing against the professors personally, since they both seemed very knowledgeable, but class was pretty boring, and the exam was ridiculous. |

His lectures aren't the most exciting things in the world but if you enjoy biology then you shouldn't have a problem paying attention. He really knows his stuff! I agree with the person that said to record lectures. I think it would help if you're like me and let your mind wander during lecture. His exams are fair considering other teachers make this course impossibly difficult. I would take him again if I had the opportunity later on in my other classes. |

Dr. Cooke is a great lecturer and a really friendly and approachable guy. There is a lot of material to learn for 207, but he does a great job teaching it! |

He is not the most exciting teacher, but he talks in a slow pace which makes the lectures easier to understand. Concepts are explained really well. The lecture slides are organized. He does not give sample exams that are similar to the actual exams, but rather practice questions. Exams are not too difficult though. There are no clicker questions or homework in this class, but everyone is expected to review the power points and read the book to stay on track. It is extremely helpful to buy a recorder and record the lectures and listen to them later along with the power points for review. |

Dr. Delwiche is an amazing professor. His class is hard, but as long as you pay attention in class and take good notes you should be fine. It also helps to have a vast knowledge of introductory biology. Dr. Delwiche is really friendly and willing to help his students. His expertise of microogranisms is evident during he lectures. I would highly recommend him to anyone. |

Lectures are boring, but the material is really interesting, and he does know what he is talking about. There is a lot he does not put on the powerpoints that he just talks about, so you have to pay attention anyway. His tests were fair, and drew mostly from the lectures. Reading the book wasn't necessary, but still helpful. |

Very full of himself. However, he seems pretty knowledgable on the subject. BSCI207 kind of sucks no matter what teacher you have. They way they set up the classes is very strange. Not organized at all really. Cant really study from lectures either. In lecture they just keep giving various facts and you are expected to just remember them. |

He is an awful awful professor. I regret taking his class more than anything I've done all of college. He is arrogant, his exams are ridiculous and have no focus and it is impossible to study for them. He doesn't teach, and his slides are just dozens of pictures that have no relevance to the subject matter. If you have to take him, the only thing I can recommend is to make sure you read the book. It's not a guarantee for a good grade, mainly because his exams are ridiculous and don't make sense. But it is the only concrete way to study. Since the lecture slides have virtually no information on them, taking notes while he speaks is very important, something I didn't realize until it was too late. However, regardless, it is impossible to write down everything he says because he speaks faster than you can write, and the topics he goes over are so random that it's hard to know what's important and what's not. As an example of how ridiculous the exams are, we had an essay question asking us to describe how a bird's digestive system works in detail, when nothing like that was ever mentioned in the book or in lecture. We learned about bird RESPIRATORY systems, but not digestive systems. The first thing that occurred to me when I read that question was that he got mixed up and in his infinite wisdom mixed up digestive and respiratory systems. I still don't know what the answer to that question was... |

I took this course with Higgins and Kent, and found that I got more out of the lectures with Kent. While they both post their lectures online, Kent had more text so it was easier to follow along and take notes. Definitely do what they recommend, and print out the lectures beforehand and take notes directly on them. And go to class, because most of the exams are based on the lectures, not the book. The class was really hard, and you definitely need to study along with the lectures instead of cramming the night before an exam. That said, it's not impossible to get a good grade in this course; it just takes work, but you really do learn a lot. |

He can be pretty intimidating and elitist since he's been teaching at umd for something like 30 years... however, he really is a great professor and even though this class was incredibly hard, he made the lectures really interesting and was very energetic (even if he does tell stupid jokes) while teaching. Sometimes, he would drop really obvious hints about exam questions. Even though he and Kent posted their lectures online, you MUST go to class. Most of his slides are pictures and equations, so you need to be there to take notes. The book is useful for background, but 80% of the exam is stuff from lecture. Like someone said already, he likes to put calculations and graphs on his exams. There was a lot of multiple choice on the midterms (~50 MC, then like 4 short answers at the end), and the final was 150 MC. Basically, if you have to take this class, do it with Higgins. |

Cooke co-taught this class with Jensen. It was a difficult class: the average on the exams were around 60%. The second exam had a 15 point curve in order to reach an average of 65% and the third exam had a 6 point curve. In addition to the 3 exams (one of which is dropped), there is a cumulative 150 point final, 3 mathbench quizzes, 75 points for clickers, and a diagnostic exam worth 25 points. This class entails knowing A LOT of information- so much information that I highly recommend studying at least a week in advance for the exams. I thought I would do well in this class because I got an A in bsci105 and bsci106, but I was wrong. |

i actually enjoyed this class very much. dr. higgins is quite enthusiastic and VERY knowledgeable since he is the mamm phys professor as well, so he knows his stuff; and from years of experience he knows how to keep students engaged and the materials memorable. exams are indeed difficult, but that in a way is a strength of his teaching. easy exams don't test you on what you know, it's the difficult ones that you benefit from. people just complain about him cause they don't work hard and expect good grades. |

Great teacher who knows his stuff. Had BSCI 207 with him and Higgins and Kent, while the less eccentric of the two, still loves participation and likes to have fun with the material. MUST go to lecture, nothing else including posted slides and the text will due. Tests based on lectures. |

Higgins in a nutshell: Great teacher when it comes to material; a little condescending but usually in good taste and funny; Tests are HARD but doable with adequate studying; MUST attend lecture, there is no substitute even though power points are posted. If you want a class where you learn a lot and don't mind studying, this is your guy for it. Expect a B to a C with adequate studying, A if you work. |

Higgins is energetic and makes it hard for you to fall asleep in class, which is good; however he also tries to artificially make the class harder than it has to be by having some trick questions and things like that. On the other hand in some way or another he ends up telling you exactly what will be on each exam (if you go to all the lectures). I recommend him. |

This is a review from someone who had this professor this past semester. I must say, he is a smart, approachable, and kwirky person, but, he is very intense at the same time. What do I mean by that? His lectures are very intense, his tests are even more intense and his powers of observation even more so. Let me tell you something: Be prepared to work hard. There are no freebies in this class; even a museum assignment that would seem simple required a lot of work to be done. He keeps track of who actually comes to lecture and whatnot, so keep that in mind if you want a good grade in this class. Although our test averages were horrifying at times, there was a curve in this class, and he drops one test- take note however, this doesnt mean that you should flunk any one test. Somehow even after dropping a test and curving, MANY people got Cs and even Ds. That might have somethign to do with one of the final questions, which was worth close to 15% of the entire exam: Describe the origin of life, draw the phylogenetic tree and explain how life evolved. Basically, it asked you to summarize the whole course in one question-in 8 minutes. I was happy to get the grade I got. One more thing: Avoid this class if you can, especially if you arent too fond of plants and/or fossils. And, please show up to class. |

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH DELWICHE. This was the worst class I have taken in my college career. He is a very arrogant, obnoxious professor. His tests are just ridiculous (who else would make you memorize the ENTIRE tree of life and when everything evolved?). Most of all, you never know what is going to be on the tests. If you have to take it with him, attend all lectures (although you learn nothing from them). MEMORIZE EVERYTHING. including chapter and lecture notes. Not only do the exams have extremely unclear and confusing questions and you have to write paragraphs for each question, the TAs are also strange graders. I still have not figured out what happened in that class. LEARNED NOTHING. RUINED MY GPA. POINTLESS CLASS. WORST TEACHER EVER. |

Dr. Cooke did a great job helping students understand the "big picture" rather than just little, unrelated facts. He truly cares about students and is very easy to talk to if you have a question or concern. Jensen's lectures were a little drier and less engaging than Cooke's. |

Good lectures, friendly and easy to talk to. Exams were the worst i've encountered in the department thus far. The exams were typically unclear, confusing and irrelevant. Helpful hint to doing well in this class: MEMORIZE EVERYTHING. Every chapter assigned and all of the lectures. Make sure you understand it all too, because the tests actually make you think. Lectures were interesting, but don't fall behind because it's all fast-paced. Interacts with students, and really helpful when it comes to questions. |

He was a GREAT professor and a really nice guy. He and Higgins had a great relationship too. He explained all the concepts clearly and thoroughly and answered any questions students had. He covers A LOT of material at a fast pace, but manages to make you understand it. He knows his subject well and expects you to by the end of class. It takes a lot of work and studying, but you should do fine if you've attended lecture and taken notes (and studied in advance!). He's also very funny and a little bit insane ...and as much as I complained during the semester, I feel a void this year without him teaching me. |

Kent was a very good lecturer. Between him and Higgins, I liked Kent better. He was a little clearer when explaining the material and wasn't as intimidating. I got an A, but not without hard work. You can't really study for the tests the night before, you have to start early and really make sure you understand the material. Higgins is a good and entertaining lecturer, but sometimes he can move fast and be unclear. Make sure you ask questions, he will always go back and answer them. Must attend lecture, his lecture outlines are full of pictures, not words, so you must take extra notes. He loves graphs and calculations for his exam questions, and in class he gives heavy hints on what those questions will be, or he flat out tells you. |

I have a class dual taught by Kent and Higgins. Though Kent is the less dynamic of the two, he is an excellent teacher. He can move quickly, but still explains everything thoroughly. Very interesting lecturer. He takes lots of quick breaks for jokes or witty comments, and seems to know what sort of teaching style engages college students.
