Wow. Its like drinking out of a fire hose! Seriously. You get bombarded gallons of information at a time. Make sure you keep up after every lecture like he tells you. He is a great person in character though. funny as hell. |

The class is not too challenging, an easy A. I took this class while working as a postbac at NIH, where he works as a counselor. While he behaves pleasantly in front of a large class, he is a different character when serving as a counselor. He treated me very poorly there. Without offering any constructive criticism, he simply judged my career goals and even my hobbies. I thought his attitude was very unprofessional and abrasive. He made sarcastic sneers about certain hobbies I have, and I just could not believe how unfriendly the atmosphere was. When I spoke to a coworker who had also sought "Dr" Higgins' advice, he said he also had a negative experience. Beware of the types who are friendly when under public eye, but hostile in private "counseling" sessions... |

I have never written a review for a professor but I pretty much had to for Professor Higgins. Ya it's a tough class but he is very generous with giving points back on exams and giving the class extra credit, not to mention he curves on top of that (I think for our semester an A was an 87%). He's also always willing to help you outside of class or his office hours if you need it. He definitely lives up to his reputation. |

This is a challenging course, because there are a lot of small details to be understood and memorized. Dr. Higgins is really helpful, especially if you go to his office hrs. Don't feel intimidated, because if you go to him a couple of times and ask good questions, then you will find him to be pleasant guy to talk to. He has been teaching this for ages, so he knows the stuff like the back of his hand. He goes super FAST! If you do not keep up then studying for exams would be stressful. For our semester, 87% was the B+/A- boundary, but then he also awards bonuses (for class and charity participation, etc), and we got 18 pts, so 85.2% was an A-, which is doable if you work hard and actually understand the main concepts! |

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIGGINS! I've heard this course is difficult no matter which professor you get because it's a "weed out" class. However, Higgins made it extremely difficult. This class was my only 100 level class but required the most work BY FAR. Unless you're really into biology, this course is going to be a struggle for you. I just needed it for my major so I thought it wouldn't be so hard since almost everyone has to take it and I used to like bio in high school... I thought wrong. I definitely thought I was going to receive an 'F' in the class because I fell so far behind and was too scared to ask for help because Higgins is so intimidating and my TA, Sara Rowland, was not very helpful. But thank God for the curve because I got a 'D' as my final grade. I needed a 'C' for my major but hey, I'm just glad I didn't fail! I got one 'D' and three 'F's on the other exams so I have NO idea how I passed. Unfortunately, since I didn't get the 'C' I needed in the class, I still need a bio course but there is no way in hell I'd be able to retake the class without going insane. So instead I'm taking BSCI106 this semester because I heard it's not as in depth as 105. I'm hoping what I heard is right because I cannot take another semester of hell. |

I thought Professor Higgins was great. I took 207 last spring with him and Professor Kent. I really enjoyed the way he taught the class. He was very engaging during lectures and he would always point out important concepts that would show up on the tests. Tests were multiple-multiple choice and were definitely challenging. If you decide to take Higgins, make sure you always go to lecture! Like others have said, a majority of the test material stems from his own words and NOT the powerpoint slides. I do understand how some people perceive his personality as "rude", as he can come off that way sometimes. But, I think it's just his sense of humor and as long as you aren't emotionally-unstable or have incredibly low self-esteem, you should be fine. In all honesty, I feel like I learned a lot from this class and from his teaching. BSCI207 is designed to filter out people, so it's going to be hard regardless of who you take. |

I found Prof. Higgins to be a very rude person. On the message board, he would answer students in a very nasty manner that I though was completely unnecessary. A lot of material is covered in this class, and I think Higgins does a decent job at explaining it all. I didn't think his exams were very fair; there would be multiple questions on topics that weren't covered whatsoever. I would recommend taking 207 with another teacher if possible. |

He's a decent lecturer, unfortunately he caters to one learning style. I personally have difficultly listening and writing notes as fast as he talks, eventually I had to give up on notes because I would miss half the class writing the notes. It would be best to put words on the slide, but for some reason that was not his style. I expected a C at best because I didn't do well on the tests (D, F, C, Final exam F) but apparently failing is passing? because I got a B in the class. He'll never tell the average (probably because it's so low) but just study and you'll pass. But to be completely honest by the time the final exam rolled by I had no clue what to study that I barely did. He gave out no practice exam and left you wondering what the 80 multiple choice final would be on. He's also very intimidating. And I liked him until he 'anonymously' made fun on me in class, no one else know who he was making fun of but I did. |

Higgins class is hard because its all about concepts. You can not just memorize the slides and expect to do well in the class, you have to understand it. You also have to go to class because for most lectures the power points are mostly filled with graphs and pictures. Overall I think Higgins is a good teacher because he does not read from the slides and actually explain stuff really well. |

I had this class with HIggins/Haag/Carleton. I like Higgins, but the class is hard. Haag was the easiest of the three. Higgins is a cool guy but the class is a lot of work. The tests are really specific based on the lecture, so go to class. Reading the book helps a little bit too. |

Don't let these statistics fool you- Higgins is the BETTER professor. He works at NIH as well and his class is the class to take if you're interested in pre-med / taking the MCAT's. He's taught many of the medical professionals in state. He's really got his lecture down to a science and doesn't ramble- I HATE powerpoints but his lectures were enjoyable and got my interest more than most of my other classes. |

Let me start by saying that Dr. Higgins is one of my favorite biology professors on campus. I had 207 with him and Dr. Kent. For a 200-lv bio class, it is difficult. Make sure you understand everything on the lectures because that is what you will be tested on. Although he might be intimidating at first, Dr. H really wants you to do well and is very receptive of questions. He is funny and really makes you understand the material. Also, he often drops major hints for exams during lectures so ALWAYS go. I dont even think an A is possible without attending class. A lot of people complain about 207. I actually found it to be very enjoyable. Since I seem to click with his teaching style, I ended up having 440 with Dr. H as well. This was my favorite bio class, hands down. The reason being that the material is very interesting. Class starts with the nervous system, then move on to cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and ends with digestive. This is the kind of cool stuff that you will learn in med school. Additionally, he really stressed the pharmacology aspect of the course. So expect to understand how different drugs interact across multiple systems. He love up/downs and graphs on exams. Major concepts that he repeats will almost always show up later. This class is not easy but put in the work and you'll be fine. If you want to enjoy lectures and really learn bio, go with Dr. Higgins. |

well this is a lot harder of a class, than i expected. I thought it was going to be a breeze like bsci 106. Make sure yo form a study group or else it will be hard to study well. His exams made you apply knowledge and not just memorize it. Hard class with no study group. |

Higgins teaches based off of powerpoints. You can expect that the tests will be based mainly off of lecture powerpoints. However, he skips over slides that contain content that will be on the exams. He likes to do class demonstrations (involving guys holding hands) and tries to interact with the class so he does a great job at keeping everyone awake. There's a lot of content, so DON'T FALL BEHIND. It'll be a hell of a time catching up. Ask a lot of questions, study as you go, and you should be okay He has a slight curve at the end of the year. I thought I would end up with an 87 or so, but I got an A. You can also get a few bonus points for filling out the same survey both at the beginning AND at the end of the year. |

Higgins is easy, but you cant be a retard if you take his class, go to lecture he will tell you everything that will be on the exam. the reason people dont like him is because he forces you to think and apply concepts, 207 was a course designed to make kids do that. i think hes the best teacher at the university (or that i have had so far) would gladly take his class again. he maybe a little pompous but hes also a funny and nice guy. |

Depending on your background, Bio III isn't THAT hard. If you've taken Bio II at college, you don't really learn much in this class. It's organized to emphasize on the little details that may have been overlooked in Bio I/II. Interesting, but useless. Dr. Higgins is definitely not approachable, but I don't mean that he's a monster. Just bad dad. He'll teach you what you need to know in way that makes you want to hate him. He seems to care about his students, but doesn't like to show it. He hints at test questions and test you on them. So, his test are pretty straightforward. Whatever he repeats in class about, he'll test you on. But you'll have to study somewhat. Class test average: C. |

BSCI207 Expecting a B? Anonymous 04/18/2011 |
Let me start by saying that this is an extremely difficult course! But it can be managed IF and only IF you take the necessary steps to prepare yourself and succeed. The exams for the Higgins/Kent class are mostly multiple choice and True/False with some short answer Q's. As someone who sucks at multiple choice exams, this class was hell...I'm telling you RIGHT NOW, if you must take this class: 1. You MUST go to lecture. Don't think you can just rely on the slides posted online. They are often lots of pictures for which you needed to be in class to understand what the significance of them or explanation was. Plus, he often says plainly what will be on the exams and/or what to completely ignore. 2. Grab a few classmates and form a study group IMMEDIATELY. This is coming from someone who has historically resisted doing the study group thing. For this class, it's an absolute necessity. 3. The textbook IS kind of helpful to solidify concepts, but I wouldn't say the tests are based on the book as much as what is covered in lecture! In other words, they don't follow the textbook, exactly, it's used as more of a reference book. 4. Take advantage of one-on-one time with the professors (or when there's only a few students). For example they offered to meet with students in the stamp food court an hour before class to answer questions/go over material. When I went I found it helpful because it was a couple days before an exam, and he gave me some points to focus on. Those things ended up making up a significant amount of points on the exam. They are there to help you. Use them! Lots of these suggestions seem kind of inconvenient and maybe even annoying to have to do to do well in this class. Trust me. I know. But the fact is, you're gonna be much better off and a lot less stressed. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and listen to me. I beg you. |

I did not expect BSCI105 to be this hard. But with Higgins, it is. He puts up powerpoints before lecture so you can take notes on. He tends to skip a few slides each lecture and sometimes he moves really fast. But if you ask questions he will thoroughly answer them for you. He is always available during office hours...which I didnt go to. A lot of people had bad things to say about Higgins b/c his tests were so damn hard. No multiple choice (except for the final exam which was cumulative) and many graphs and charts needed to be interpreted. GSS review sessions helped a lot. Lab wasnt that bad, pretty easy. Just do what the TA tells you to do and you should be good to go. Overall, rigorous class which moves fast. I recommend going to lecture and then supplementing class notes with the textbook in order to clarify certain topics. |

BSCI207 is an extremely hard course and not many science majors are aware of how hard it actually is until they take it. I can honestly say this class is far worse than Orgo I because it was taught by Higgins. Higgins is a great man and is an excellent professor who gives the VERY BEST examples. HOWEVER, his exams are IMPOSSIBLE and he is not very helpful. The only time Higgins will be available to help is via blackboard and the five mins after class because I swear this man does not believe in office hours. I put my life into this class, formed a study group, and went to office hours almost every week. I received a 59% on the final and broke down into tears because I could of sworn I was going to fail. He makes you believe you are failing the whole entire semester and when he curves, you dont know whether to send him a thank u card or curse him. Dr. Jeffrey cotaught this class and while he is boring, he does try to be funny. Honestly, I liked Dr. Jeffrey way better because his material was proportional to what was given on the exams. If you have to take this class with Higgins and Jeffrey coteaches, make sure you secure an A with Jeffrey's exams and try your very best with Higgins. |

The only reason I will not give Dr. Higgins 5 stars is becuase we are both super stubborn and stubborn people buck heads like rams. Dr. Higgins is a phenominal lecuturer and does not make heavy use of the textbook. He puts his lectures online and if you go to class those lectures make perfect sense. A lot of my class did not do so hot simply because they did not attend lecture. NEVER miss lecture even if you are hung over from Thursday night. I have never learned so much in a biology course as I have his and I recommend him to anyone who is willing to put in the time to learn. If not take an someone who doesn't care. Here is my top five bits of advice. 1. Go to lecture 2. Be that annoying kid who asks questions during class 3. Go to GSS. It's a lot of material 4. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. Review notes everyday. Don't look at the picutres and say cool beans, but make sure you understand what is going on, on each slide. 5. Don't get on his bad side you will both cry. |

Professor Higgins is an absolutely horrible teacher and his class was a miserable experience. I have never been so fed up with and disappointed with a professor's attitude and teaching style. He does not care about his students and it shows in his lectures and exams. First of all, his lectures and PowerPoints are a complete joke. On average they are 60 slides long (as opposed to 12-15 that Prof. Jeffrey used to convey equal information) and are cluttered with useless pictures, duplicate slides, and information that just make learning the material harder. The lectures are rife with spelling mistakes and contradictions and I even had a lecture that included final exam information for a class he had taught years ago. It just shows how careless he is in preparing for class and how little he refines his lectures year to year. What bothered me the most however, was his tendency to jump back and forth from slide to slide during class. I recorded many of his lectures and used them to study for exams and when he did this, my notes would not match up with his PowerPoints and this was extremely frustrating. Aside from his poor lectures, he came off as very crass, brash, and unapproachable. Some students may enjoy his sense of humor but I thought it got in the way of his teaching and was sick of him within a few classes. His exams were noticeably harder than his co-teacher's (Dr. Jeffrey). They required us to know the material and apply it at a level we never went over in class. They were poorly written and averages were very low. Had it not been for Jeffrey's tests, I doubt I would've gotten an A in this class. I strongly discourage anyone from taking this class with Higgins. Expect to be confused by his lectures and read a whole lot from the book. I'm glad I got out of this class with an A and never have to take a class with this man again. |

I attended every review sessions. Make sure you have Amanda Murti as a TA. From what I have heard, Nelson and Benson, the other BSCI teachers are terrible. is extremely intelligent in the field of biology but is extremely difficult. I would not recommend taking this class especially as a intro bio course. He does not prepare you for the exams at all and everything it short answer and drawings. He does give you 60 extra credit points by taking online quizzes which is plus and is willing to give a curve even if he says he doesn't. this class is a FULL TIME job. i recommend going to every review offered if you do end up taking this class. but overall way to much work and exams are extremely unfair theres no point in studying he will trick you and put question on the exam he never mentioned in class. also for exam questions don't focus on the main points look for the small points. if he emphasizes that something will be on the exam and tells you to study it..dont study it..he puts the exact opposite..overall difficult professor but a nice guy |

BSCI440 Expecting an A Biology Major 05/27/2010 |
Most of what the previous reviewers have said is correct about the class. Dr. Higgins speaks too fast, skips slides, very critical. However, he IS very helpful. If you go to his office hours, or write questions on the discussion board, he is sure to answer then or direct you to the place in the text where you can find the answers. His tests are challenging b/c there isn't much partial credit. An annoying thing about the tests is that there are always mistakes on the practice tests and practice answer keys. So two exact questions have different answers, and it is hard to decipher which one is the correct answer. The TAs are not helpful either. Make sure you check your tests after you get them back. The reason is that the keys might be wrong too. The one boring part of this course is the part that is taught by Dr. Araneda. He lectures from the back of the room, so people in the front cannot hear him. He spends an entire lecture focusing on one slide, and expects you to know the rest. The tests written by him are confusing. But reading the book and looking at the CD for Araneda helps a whole bunch. For Higgins, GO TO CLASS!!!! |

Let me start by saying this, this class is a lot of material, and a lot of it comes from all over the place. Higgins does mostly the physiology, and Kent does the Nature/environmental stuff. I personally didn't like the structure of the course too much, and I feel like it shouldn't be a pre-requisite for bio majors(Anantomy would be much more useful). Their grading system was a bit odd, but from what I heard around the class if you had something around an 85, you got an A, if you had above a 76 or 77 you had a B, and then I'm not sure what the C and D marks were. Overall, I thought they both did the best they could with the structure of the 207 course, and provided students with enough material to go over to do well enough on the exams. It wasn't a nightmare but it wasn't a walk in the park either. If you study, you should be ok. |

Yes, Higgins is pompous and rude and arrogant and makes you feel like an idiot. But, after spending a semester with him, the thing I dislike most about him is his disinterest in students. He arrives late to class, he ignores student emails, he avoids opportunities to actually discuss issues with students, and he is not sympathetic to their problems. You might enjoy the lecture, but all the learning has to be done on your own - prepare to spend your life on this class or take someone else for BSCI4440. |

Alright, so, yes, Higgins is a hard professor. But he is also one of the best lecturers I have ever had. I really enjoyed going to lecture and learning (that's another thing- YOU HAVE to GO to lecture, you can't just listen to them or go off of his notes). The material he teaches is really interesting and he tells you in class what you do and don't need to know on his exams. He is only intimidating if you make him intimidating. You can tell he loves teaching-- and he's really good at it. But he can be pretty arrogant- but that's only because he's insanely smart and has really established himself as a research biologist. If you study hard for his exams, you will do well. If you don't- you will miserably fail. But, if you're not into studying, my advice is to get out of Bio now while you can. |

He will have a ppt slide up and then talk for twenty minutes about things that are on the next two slides. Then he'll skip the next two slides because he had already talked about them, so you'll never "see" what hes talking about... exams...yuck mostly increase and decrease...if A increased what would happen to B...if B happened...what would happen to D... hard matching questions GRAPHS!! he loves graphs...he'll ask you to draw a graph that describes a relationship for 12 points (no partial credits of course). and theyre not easy graphs. he won't tell you that he is curving so he leads you to believe that you are getting a C for the entire semester until you get your final grade...so at that point you dont know if you should thank him for giving you a B or hate him for making you stress out all semester. |

He can be pretty intimidating and elitist since he's been teaching at umd for something like 30 years... however, he really is a great professor and even though this class was incredibly hard, he made the lectures really interesting and was very energetic (even if he does tell stupid jokes) while teaching. Sometimes, he would drop really obvious hints about exam questions. Even though he and Kent posted their lectures online, you MUST go to class. Most of his slides are pictures and equations, so you need to be there to take notes. The book is useful for background, but 80% of the exam is stuff from lecture. Like someone said already, he likes to put calculations and graphs on his exams. There was a lot of multiple choice on the midterms (~50 MC, then like 4 short answers at the end), and the final was 150 MC. Basically, if you have to take this class, do it with Higgins. |

Higgins is a good and entertaining lecturer, but sometimes he can move fast and be unclear. Make sure you ask questions, he will always go back and answer them. Must attend lecture, his lecture outlines are full of pictures, not words, so you must take extra notes. He loves graphs and calculations for his exam questions, and in class he gives heavy hints on what those questions will be, or he flat out tells you. |

Very interesting lecturer. He takes lots of quick breaks for jokes or witty comments, and seems to know what sort of teaching style engages college students. Despite his humor, he is a very good teacher. You must attend lecture because there is more to class than what's on the slides. Very receptive to questions, especially if they don't take lecture time. |

Exams are difficult. Likes to use graphs and tricky questions. Lectures are engaging but he can be very condescending at times. Must attend lecture: his exams are derived from lecture not textbook. |

Engaging lecturer who knows how to keep a class of around 200 awake at 8 am. He explains everything very clearly. His exams are doable, although difficult, as they require that you thoroughly understand the relationships, cascades, and pathways. One drawback about him is just that he is pretty pompous and elitist. |

Dynamic, interesting lecturer. Really cares about he subject and makes it comprehensible. Will keep you awake no matter how early you take his class. Exams are objective, very few short-answers, primarily matching, definitions, etc. |
