An exploration of the aesthetics and history of experimental and avant-garde film from the very origins of cinema up through the 21st century, within the context of avant-garde and experimental art, music, and literature over the same time period. Special focus on American experimental cinema of the mid-20th century, with specific attention to the relation of experimental film to issues of race, gender, sexuality, politics, and identity.
