Online lectures for the semester but they were fine. The class is easy but it’s all essays so subjective grading can screw you sometimes. A negative is that you need a 94 for an A.

This class is exactly as easy as it seems to pass, but its kinda difficult to get an A. You will never actually interact with the professor as he doesn't come to campus, so your discussions will be lead by your TA. You're expected to watch 3 or so lectures a week and keep up with the reading (you don't actually have to and most people don't) The only thing you have to do weekly is read one excerpt and answer a 300 word question about it which you get a 100 for completing. You also have to go to discussion once a week and actually participate once to get a 100 in that to. Your two lowest discussions and weekly summaries get dropped, so you should have a 100 in those areas. You also have to write a paper for this class which is fairly easy and most people do well on it. My main issue with this class was the 3 exams which are short essay questions and are online. Firstly, they are always at the most inconvenient times, and if you can't make that time they only offer one extra makeup time which is usually at 8 am the next day. There is also no rubric for grading and the grading is entirely dependent on your TA, so you better make those exams count! I actually liked my TA, and as of right now, do not regret taking this gen ed.

Took this class because it looked interesting, the assignments every week are fairly easy its just a lot of text to read, Mary was my TA meaning she graded everything for the course. I never had any problems with my assignments being graded or discussion grade but she did grade harshly on the final paper and exams. Often what she gave in response didn't make a lot of sense and the prompts were confusing and broad for the amount of time you had to complete them. I did try very hard in this class but for a gen ed it was to harshly graded, Mary was a nice person though not sure why this was the case.

Had lectures online this semester but class was easy. One assignment one discussion per week. 94 is needed for an A which is garbage for a gen Ed but not a bad one to take especially if interested in Ancient Rome.

This course was fully online so I don't know the prof, only my TA (is a very slow talker as I know from the uploaded lecture videos which were still slow when watched in 2x speed.) The course was fairly easy, but many of the articles got lengthy as the semester went on and it was hard to keep up with sometimes as they could read a multiple 30pg readings.

I took this course over winter break and this course was significantly more work than winter break courses I have taken in the class. I hate to give him a bad review because he was genuinely nice and I think that most of my issues are related to the time frame of the course(I don't know if he has taught winter break classes before?) He released all of the assignments in mid December because I emailed him and asked him if I should drop the class because I had a commitment in the last week of winter break. He also takes a lot of time to respond to each individual students work daily. However, even though I was able to spread out the assignments over more days than I was given, I spent way more time doing work than I felt was reasonable each day. Most days consisted of 50+ pages of dense reading, 4 20 minute videos and a long harshly graded discussion post. The class had 7 people and we were expected to respond to two peoples discussion posts the same night the discussion posts were due. As a result, I ended up staying up until 11:30 on multiple nights waiting for other people to submit theirs. Grading criteria was not communicated clearly. There were no rubrics, leading to a mismatch of expectations(He was looking for a well developed, thought out response when his rubric looked like he was grading for completion). On tests, he is nitpicky for exact details and wants way more than is possible given his word count/time guidelines. I was not able to get everything in despite using my notes(it was supposed to be closed note) and writing about half of my responses in advance. I literally would have gotten a 50 on these tests if I had taken them honestly. Again I don't think this would have been an issue in a normal semester class because I would have known the information better through having longer to study and do assignments, actual in person lectures and I would have been able to recover from bad grades on the first few assignments.

Professor Adler is one of the best orators I've ever met; that is to say, he is fantastic at talking, storytelling, and keeping your focus. The entire 50 minutes of every lecture I was unwaveringly engaged in the things he was teaching and saying. The class content was very interesting and was structured very well, being very challenging but very leniently graded and as long as you showed an adequate level of thinking on assignments, you passed with flying colors. He's charismatic and funny and has great energy. With that being said, he's rather traditional in his teaching style. He does not use PowerPoints or lecture slides at all, nor does he post lecture notes or summaries, so going to class and paying close attention to the words coming out of his mouth is ESSENTIAL. Exams were fair and focused on big-picture understandings of the topics we discussed. There's a good amount of reading for this class, fair warning. But as long as you hold good attention and don't absolutely blow this class off, it's an easy A, a really interesting class, and great for GenEd credit.
