COMM382 Expecting a W Anonymous 02/28/2025 |
If I had even a fraction of an idea how awful Professor Dogbatse was, I would have never made the mistake of registering for COMM382 in the first place. First, the class is incredibly unorganized: modules can only be accessed through a single link on ELMS: it's like she poorly copied the ELMS interface into a separate webpage and created her own version of it, full of videos too large to load and unaccessible links. Attendance is MANDATORY and assessed with daily quizzes, all of which contain vague wording and are near impossible to complete. All quizzes require you to know a letter or number of the day, which she softly says once and then never again repeats. Her first exam had a median of 60%, and she seemed utterly unapologetic and simply told us to 'do better next time.' During class, she stands behind students and stares at their computer screens, whispering things in their ears when they dare to switch tabs for a second. She picks favorites, and then actively calls out and bullies students who do not meet that criteria. Once, I left class to go to the restroom and professor Dogbatse referred to it in front of the entire class as "indescribably rude and disrespectful," actively mentioning the tabs I had open on my laptop while I was gone. Additionally, as a student who wears hearing aids and has ADS accommodations, it is unfair to see a professor whisper both in your ear and in front of the class and then be criticized for not understanding. Her accent is also incredibly hard to understand: for a communication class, it feels reasonable to expect to be able to understand the professor's communication. For a gen ed class, the workload is also insane. It is incredibly demeaning to spend hours studying and preparing for a gen ed only to fail every assignment due to vague wording. Assignments are graded leniently, but are only a small portion of your grade. Everything else in the class is impossible to score highly on. TLDR, do not take ANY class taken by this professor. She is new to teaching at UMD, and clearly has not learned how to structure or teach a class. |

Highly recommended professor for Comm 382. I took this class during winter. She is super nice and straightforward in instructions. She made sure we were taking good care of us and engaging in conversation with others although it was an online asynchronous class. I enjoyed her recorded lectures, and all the assignments were fun and real world situation related. |

Super easy course. Definitely wasn't my favorite comm class I've ever taken but she made the workload super manageable and all the tests were online. Professor Nachrin was very nice, understanding, and a lenient grader. |

She's really sweet and her class as a whole was really easy. Attendance is mandatory but it can be a fun class to participate in if you commit to engaging with the material. There are a few sensitive topics brought up throughout the course (e.g. politics, bigotry, etc) but she's very understanding and you can feel free to communicate with her if a particular discussion point makes you uncomfortable. There are reading quizzes that you do outside of class and 3 reflection papers (4-5 pages long) throughout the semester and in-class assignments that are mostly graded based on completion. |

I found this class to be pretty boring, and I have taken many classes on racism and intercultural communication. I think that there is not really a logical flow of information in the course. I think there are several instances where the professor was not very understanding of people's differing opinions and viewpoints, and I feel like this class kind of lessened the affects of racism when compared to my other classes. I think the approach was more "let's all get along, we are all humans" and while that is good, it put a bad taste in my mouth at times. Professor Dapherede is a nice woman, but I was not fond of her teaching style or approach to this topic. |

Very chill professor that is knowledgeable and passionate about course content. The assigned readings for each class (especially the research papers) were kind of tedious so it's probably better to skim them otherwise it was a fun class. Also she wants people to speak more during class time for discussions so be prepared for that |

she is so cool! the fact that she is so young (mid/late 20s?) means she knows almost exactly the ins and outs of intercultural communication esp among young people. she is great at facilitating class conversation so everyone gets a chance to share their thoughts while also keeping it on topic. i hope she stays at UMD, i know she's in the doctoral program but pleeaasseeee Umisha if you're reading this stay b/c I would take like any class she teaches ever. this is also a super important class just in learning how to navigate the world and the different people/ideas you encounter. do the readings, show up, talk a little bit, and you're golden. she is just SO GREAT!!!!!! |

Ari is a graduate student, so he is super chill and fun. This class was easy and we talked a lot about interesting topics. It's an easy A and interesting so take this course to get a Gen Ed out of the way. You have to do discussions and he assigns some interesting podcasts and movies to watch. There's no exam but there is a final project which Ari walks you through and is fun and laid back to do. I loved him, take him if u can. |

She is a very nice person and is interested in students lives and progress. She is a pretty good professor and knows what she's talking about. This class had pretty easy to understand material so it wasn't very difficult. It was graded off of a midterm, final, a handful of quizzes, and a group project. Overall she did a good job. |
