ECON470 Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/18/2024 |
The course material is not hard especially if you review. Dr. Kaplan is nice and energetic and can explain the concepts really well and provides lots of examples that really help. He gives pop quizzes in person on pen and paper. They are very specific to his lectures and some of the examples he uses. His exams are ridiculously long, for the 1 hour and 15 minute midterm, he made us write a 5 page blue book essay and 5 1 page each short answers and a few other questions that took up multiple pages. The questions are also very different from anything he gives you in class, the exams are much harder than the way he teaches the class. You really have to understand the specifics of each topic and relate them to each other. Overall a decent class with not a lot of work but it doesn’t need a lot of time. |

If you attend class, take notes, do the reading, and are organized, you will have no problem with the homework and exams. Consistency is critical in this class. Overall, great professor, and the class was very interesting. |

Great professor! Organized and clear lecturer, interesting material. Exams reflected the material covered in class. Overall, would recommend |

While the class was really difficult, Prof. Hellerstein was extremely engaging during her lectures. After doing poorly on the midterm, she was extremely accommodating to meet with me outside of her regular office hours (since I had another class at that time). She said she made the problem set and exams challenging on purpose, which was kind of frustrating, but she was really kind and had a generous curve at the end. She does a great job using current events to put theory in perspective and easier to understand. I would definitely recommend her, but make sure you can dedicate a lot of time to her class if you want to get an A. |

I am one of those people who always fall asleep in class, but her lectures were genuinely so engaging and fun I loved it so much. She also does a terrific job relating class materials/theory to a real life examples and/or current economy which made it super interesting. (she's also a very nice person) |

Lectures are interesting, so definitely go to class and take notes. There are a bunch of readings/papers, but you can always read the abstract and skim the rest. Exams are split into short and long answers. You don't need to study that much for them as long as you paid attention in class. If want to go deeper into topics such as jobs report, min wage, discrimination, then you'll find this class very satisfying. |
