I like Frank. He's a nice guy and it's funny listening to his antics from the industry. This class starts off pretty dull as we spend a long time looking at plans and going over the features of AutoCad. I think it's good to cover these fundamentals but it is admittedly boring. However, the class does pick up in the latter third when we really get into Civil3D and the big design project. I honestly enjoyed doing the project because I was learning a new skill, and Civil3D is a very important skill to have. The biggest complaint about Frank's class is that he doesn't release grades until close to the end of the semester. This is true, but in my opinion it's just not a big deal. This isn't a class that people fail. If you take some degree of lecture notes and put in effort on the homeworks you're gonna be fine. It's just not that deep.

TLDR: Important class, very time-consuming, and kind of a grind. You’ll probably get at least a B if you stay on top of things, but you’re going to feel like you’re flying blind most of the semester. Pay attention to everything Frank says, take obsessive notes, and do not put off the final project. This class somehow made me feel both extremely locked in and completely locked out at the same time. Like Frank is genuinely a nice guy and will help you if you go to him with questions. The content itself is important and honestly one of the more realistic classes in terms of what site civil / land development work actually looks like in the real world. That said, the way the class is delivered makes it harder than it needs to be. Lectures are pretty dull and feel like 75 minutes of rambling, and it’s hard to tell what’s important to write down versus what isn’t. The first half of the semester is mostly plan reading, engineering scales, profiles, etc., and the second half shifts into Civil3D/AutoCAD basics and final project work. Once you actually start doing stuff in Civil3D, that’s when the class becomes useful. Most, but not all, Quizzes and HWs are reused from previous semesters, and sometimes they’re due before the content is fully covered in class. Expect to lose points for really small things b/c Frank is a stickler with grading, and there are no rubrics, so it’s not always clear where points are coming off. Grades also aren’t posted on Canvas, which makes it hard to know where you stand until late-semester. HWs were honestly the most tedious part of the class. They’re not conceptually hard, but there are a lot of tiny errors you can make, and one small mistake can cost you multiple points. The final project is now done in groups (which is a plus), but it still takes a good chunk of time. Part of it is done in class and part is based on posted instructions, so start it early and work on it throughout the semester. Do not save it for the end, you'll regret it. The final exam is the same format as before: 25 MCQ and 5 free-response opinion-based questions. He warns about a few “stumper” questions, so take that as you will. Advice: Keep Google Docs open and take notes on basically everything he says during lecture, even if it feels unnecessary at the time. Also, have friends in the class to compare notes and check work with. Overall, Frank is a decent professor, and the class is useful, but the organization and grading make it more frustrating than it needs to be.

Only reason I didn't give him a lower rating is because the class content itself is very easy and straightforward and could have easily been condensed down to two weeks' worth of content and a group project, but with frank as the teacher it sure doesn't feel like it. I have nothing against him personally and he can be outgoing if you do try to talk to him, but he does not know how to teach a class nor does he make himself accessible during class time for the MANY questions you will be left with on the classwork and project due to the vague language on assignments and unclear expectations. Grading is slow and unpredictable; even if you follow an assignment to the rubric he may still expect you to go above that in order to receive full points. Most of the in-class material can easily be learned simply by using the Civil3D software on your own time, but the quiz questions are based off one-off comments he may make in class so it's important to be present for lecture. With all this said you can do fine in the class as long as your group is pulling it's weight on the project, and most of the classwork will require you spending time on the lab computers late at night, which all things considered is not the worst considering he will move class online most of the time. Keep your announcements on and be prepared to print your own materials and ask someone who took the class before you for the quizzes since the questions are typically identical and he sends out a key

Professor White is a kind person who wants you to succeed in his class. His class will not be enjoyable though. He’ll talk the whole period going through step by step tutorials on the lesson at hand. While this is useful sometimes, most of this course is intuitive, especially the autocad part. The class period is painstakingly boring. He talks through every detail and then chooses random ones to quiz us on. Additionally, every assignment and file is posted under a single files stream on elms. It’s just disorganized. Also, no grades will ever be handed back to you. Basically you’ll know your grade once final grades are submitted through testudo. Professor White is a busy guy but it would be nice if we received more feedback on our work. A lot of this class is taking guesses and hoping it aligns with what he’s thinking. Professor White is nice but not a good professor for this course. He does know a lot about civil engineering though.

Frank is very nice and friendly, but he is not the best professor. He will crack jokes which makes class a bit more entertaining. Some of the topics were extremely interesting but others will put you right to sleep. This class is not hard content wise but the quizzes have obscure questions that make you question everything you know. This class has barely any work for the first two months and then you are slammed with assignments that take forever. If he says that the homework will take awhile, whatever you are expecting, double it. (especially if you do not have any civil3D experience.) Assignments have very vague directions so you will lose crazy points for not putting one buzzer word that he mentioned at the beginning of the year. He also puts a lot of tricks into his quizzes and homework's which is frustrating because frequently what the trick was, we did not go over. We did not get grades back until December 7th, which is insane considering the fact we had our final exam + final project due that week (which was worth 50% of our grade and due two days apart.) The grades came out in an alphabetized spread sheet (with no names just UIDs.) This class can be frustrating at times but its also not the worst class out there. Time consuming but fairly easy. Thankfully he will not fail you so you really only have to deal with him for a semester.
