Dr. Li runs a pretty straightforward class. Lectures are very clear and he post all the slides beforehand. This class does have 3 labs which weren't too bad. Exams were pretty straightforward and felt relevant to the lecture content, no surprises. The only downside to this class is the final group project which is an 8-page report (single spaced), and 10 min presentation. The actual requirements aren't that bad its just a lot of work and research, even in a group. I would recommend Dr. Li for this class. |

Dr. Li should have never taught this course. Yes, people withdrew from this class (1/3 of about 18 students left), but they had plenty of valid reasons to do so. Dr. Li changed the textbook of the course without approval so students who already found the previous book prior to starting the class wasted their money. When lecturing, he rarely took time to answer questions from students and mainly stared at his PowerPoint presentations which tended to be disorganized and, at times, unpleasant to look at. Students needed to loudly interrupt him just for him to answer questions. He rarely worked through practice problems during lectures and when he did, the pace tended to be extremely fast. Initially, he told us that we could not work together on homework assignments, which tended to be quite difficult. Preventing students from asking others about assignments hinders overall learning. After multiple complaints from students were directed to the department, this was reversed. These assignments would not be returned in a timely manner for the midterms which contributed to a lack of study material and overall understanding. Dr. Li was very reluctant to help with homework questions, even during his office hours. His advice ended up being very vague and unhelpful; he would not even say if your current answer was incorrect. Exam material did not reflect what was given on homework assignments, to the point where an entire question was thrown out on the first midterm because it had yet to be taught to us. This resulted in students being upset due to time being wasted on the thrown-out question when it could have been distributed more appropriately with the other problems. He even assigned a novel to be read throughout the semester and barely touched it when its due date came around. The only decent and somewhat enjoyable part of this course was the labs as they were instructed by an entirely different person separate from Dr. Houng Li. I am unsure as to how he was hired to teach the course in the first place, but this should have never happened. Future civil/environmental engineering students should avoid this lecturer at all costs (if he continues to be a lecturer in the future), even if it means taking this fundamental course in a different semester. |

Tough teacher. No nonsense attitude. Did not want to be a tutor. Not to make students feel good about themselves at the moment, but the slides and materials are solid and look useful down the road, so I downloaded them all for future use. Some classmates could not take it and dropped the course. |
