If I could, I would give 3.5 stars instead of 3. This class is generally pretty easy and discusses device physics of lasers, solar cells, LEDs, and photodectors. 75% of the grade is based on homeworks, and each homework is like 1 page of writing. Theres no math or problem solving. Its mostly understanding how the devices work in a pretty detailed way (and different variations of each device). The other 25% of the grade is from 2 presentations about any topic previously discussed in class (but you probably need to discuss something more specific, and it requires some research). Mr. Gong is a very kind professor and he grades the assignments generously. The issue is that Mr. Gong's lectures are not always very clear. He tends to go off topic and it distracts from the main topic of discussion. He also doesn't really pause in lectures to make sure we understand. There isn't much teacher-student interaction. I tend to need to research the topics later on my own time to understand it better. I would recommend this course though as a pretty easy elective course. Mr. Gong is very nice, and generally I spend about 30mins-1hr a week on homeworks. |
