Cheng Gong

Cheng Gong is the "he's a nice guy, but..." kind of professor. He is very enthusiastic about the topics that he teaches and loves to encourage his students. He has a "nobody fails" policy where no matter how badly you do on the exams, if you show up to lectures and do the hws he will give you a passing grade. This is where my positive remarks end. He is not a very good lecturer; he either read directly off of his slides or derives equations in a very disorganized way. He gave us only a few hws throughout the semester that were pretty easy but not very useful for learning or studying for exams. We had two exams and a final. He gave us ZERO resources to prepare for them, so you would pretty much go in blind. It doesn't help that the TA this semester wasn't very good; he had an influence on the difficulty of the exam questions and most likely made them way harder than Chen Gong would've. He didn't release the final exam grades, but I am assuming that there was a heavy curve based on my own and peers' performances on the exams. 2.5/5, would recommend if you want to guarantee that you pass 380, but you probably will take very little away from the course |

Good instructor that wants you to learn and not stress over your grades. Complete every assignment and do so with care, and do about average on the exams and you'll get a fine grade. It's not an easy class and the material can be complex and abstract, but he's very caring and will take time with you after class if you don't understand something. He's not the best professor I've had, but I feel he's a very solid choice for 380. His TA was where he fell short. His TA does research for him, but frankly, has no experience being a TA and clearly hasn't been around enough UTFs to get an idea of how he should structure what he does. Ultimately, Dr. Gong is great, but his TA wasn't. |

Good professor, demonstrate stuff with care, definitely knows his job, while his accent and handling of this language may confuse you in some cases - no worry just ask ab it. Generous on grading, cheat sheets are allowed and exams are straightforward, also I believe he give a little curve at the end of semester. Definitely recommend this professor for 380. |
