Prof Huang is very nice and calm. Her class is packed with literature and the readings are long. You are expected to read different texts and be prepared to discuss the topics in class. As long as you know the main ideas and themes you'll be fine. She also likes to cold call on people during class. You will have discussion posts each week, one group presentation, and a final. The final can be a paper, video, podcast if you want. This class is pretty easy and chill as long as you turn in your work. She does take attendance so come to class for participation points.

She is wonderful. Very compassionate, and her analysis of the text was insightful. She made an effort to connect with the students. Graded very fairly, and left lots of relevant feedback.

Really great professor! Throughly enjoyed his class. The texts he assigns aren’t too long. The class was discussion heavy so be prepared to participate.

Cote is great... Yeah it can get boring, but you can tell he's trying to help and not punish you with info, or be a tryhard like other grad students. You're crazy if you don't take a class with him!

I took Professor Wyatt's class in Spring 2011. He is a very interesting lecturer because he seems really passionate about what he's talking about. He made a lot of insightful comments that I found helpful when I had to write essays and do assignments, so I would recommend showing up to lecture and paying attention. Overall, the course was a good experience.

Professor Wyatt is a really effective professor. For one, he has an extensive knowledge about literature and history. Most of the books we read for this class had something to do with slavery and the Civil War and he knew a lot about these topics. His lectures are really interesting and he offers thought provoking insight into the readings. Also, I found that Wyatt is really passionate about what he's teaching which I found refreshing. Lectures are necessary, he gives random pop quizzes that are super easy and are basically just to make sure you show up to class and do the readings. About three papers (all of different lengths) and an open book final exam. Overall, a great class with a great professor. I also had a great TA which made it that much better.

Dr. Wyatt has been teaching for 40 years, so he knows what he is talking about. That being said, sometimes his lectures can be a little dry and boring. At the end, I was glad that I took the class. Reading the literature was really important in this class as there were weekly quizzes, with most of them being easy if you read the book. Definitely would recommend Wyatt to other students. P.S., there is a really really nice surprise in regards to the final exam

I took this for a CORE class and it has led me to pursue English as my concentration (I'm a journalism major). At first, it was boring with readings he selected such as Abraham Lincoln's speeches and poetry and writing by W.E.B. DuBois but as we got to the novels (Adventures of Huck Finn, Great Gatsby, Absalom, Absalom) they became very interesting. I really enjoyed reading every book and did not see it as a chore. Wyatt can drag on sometimes and the lectures can be boring but he is very knowledgeable and insightful about the readings. There are 3 papers (1 is 1 page, 1 is 2 pages, and 1 is 3 pages) which aren't hard and my TA, Adam, grades easy and was great. There's also a final and weekly quizzes on the readings which are one word answers (ex: what was one emotion you felt while reading? what was your favorite thing about this lecture? etc). Overall, it's an interesting and easy class for a CORE and VERY interesting for majors. I definitely plan on taking more classes with Dr. Wyatt

This guy LOVES American literature. I've never seen a professor care more about what he/she is teaching. That being said, most of the lecture is really just him presenting interesting ideas. If you care about literature, or you actually read the books (and not Sparknotes) you'll have a ball in lecture. Otherwise, only a few things in lecture are important to know for the papers and exams. Discussion is very important. Not only are there mini-assignments given most classes, the information for what the TAs are looking for in the papers is given in discussion. Expect about 4-5 hours of reading/week if you're reading the books, much less if you're using Sparknotes. About 5 hours of study and work per month should be enough for papers and exams.

Great professor to take ENGL222 with. He's clearly passionate about the literature of the class and makes several interesting points. He always kept me engaged in the material. The class overall wasn't that hard as long as you went to lecture and took notes there. Although I only read 2 of the assigned 6 books, I still managed to pull off an A so if you need an HL take it with Mallios!

Overall, the class was ok. The actual lectures for Dr Wyatt were INCREDIBLY boring! if your an english major, you'll think he's insightful. If not, you'll likely fall asleep most of the time. They do give quizzes every so often and three papers of different lengths. The readings are ok, but can also be very boring. TAs can be helpful. I had Sarah SIllin and she was great. She actually helped students understand the difficult texts, and Im horrible with literature. SHe made me understand it. In short, I wouldnt reccomend it.

A very good professor. It's evident that he is extremely passionate about literature, and loves receiving feedback and opinions from his students. Lecture can sometimes be boring because he talks a lot and it's hard to take notes because he jumps from one topic to another. But the material is interesting and he emphasizes what information you need to know. Work for the semester consisted of one timed writing and two short papers. There is a lot of reading involved, but the texts are not too complicated. Attendance in discussion makes a big difference in your grade, so be sure to show up!

This was one of the best classes I have taken so far at UMD. I'm not an English major by any means, but I had to take the class as an HL. I thought it would suck because of all the novels we have to read. But in all honesty, Sparknotes had 80% of the books and I didn't really read any of it. Lectures are pretty good. There like a large discussion section. Make sure you go to your discussions too, there a big part of the grade. I just loved this class not challenging and a lot of fun.

Profesor's Mallios is a really nice guy, and his insights on texts are nice and refreshing. I didn't really approach him for any special help so I can't speak on that aspect of him but he gives very little assignments, (two papers, one 3 page and one 4-5 page) and he only gives a midterm and a final.

I absolutely loved Dr. Wyatt! His lectures were insightful and fascinating and he is really knowledgeable about American literature. The readings for the class are varied, and range from The Adventures of Huck Finn to Beloved. The class isn't overly challenging - attend class, do the readings, and do the 2 papers. I would definitely recommend taking this class with Wyatt - he is a really great instructor!

He is a very nice man, and has a lot of great insight into the readings. However, his lectures are very haphazard; he proposes many different points at once, making the original line of thought difficult to follow. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed Dr. Mallios and this course. If you like literary analysis at all, you will like Dr. Mallios.
