Sydney Sharpstene
ENGL257 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 05/15/2024 |
She is such a nice professor. She is extremely understanding, encouraging, and friendly. She really appreciates input about the class from the people actually taking the class. She creates a welcoming atmosphere to freely discuss the books we have read. The class was structured around a set of readings we had to read before class. Then, we would generally do a class activity, learn the history of the reading/ time period, and then discuss the readings. There weren't many out-of-class assignments, but there was a paper, a research project, a midterm, and a final about the readings. It is a great class for people who are interested in working with children in the future or loved reading when they were kids. |

Professor Sharpstene is like a ball of sunshine, she is down to earth and super chill, and she made sure the class felt like that too! Her methods are slightly geared to those who plan on going into teaching or education, but regardless she made the class super engaging and fun. Amazing teacher!! |

Absolutely loved her for this course! The whole thing was online but she was so accommodating and kept the class fun and light. Class discussions were always so robust and interesting, and you could tell as a class we were really all on the same page and did the readings we had to do for the day. Workload is quite light, with the occasional assignment on days where we might not meet over Zoom or if a book took more than one class to cover. The readings and her book selections were great and I enjoyed all of them. It is obvious that there's going to be a decent amount of reading for the course, but as someone who doesn't like reading that much anyway, I found it quite easy to manage and complete in the time she gave us (usually a lot of time), and the books were interesting, which made it easier as well. My only negative is that she doesn't use rubrics for her assignments, and I wish she did, just so things could be made clearer and there would be less confusion on what is expected. |

Professor Ewing is one of the nicest professors I have had so far at UMD! She just wants her students to do well and enjoy the course. The discussions in class were engaging and thought provoking as long as you read the books. There are 3 papers throughout the semester and 1 final project, however they aren't too bad at all and Professor Ewing will help you throughout the process if you want to meet on Zoom, in person, or any time. You should definitely take this class! |

I adore Peter! He is so down to earth, conversational, and genuinely fun to talk to. ENGL257 felt like more of a book club than an actual class, and I really enjoyed the conversational structure of his class because I was able to read all the books on the syllabus freely without worrying about being quizzed on every small detail. I wish more English professors were like him! The structure of his class is amazing and helps you learn a lot and get a lot overall out of the class without worrying a ton about your grades, especially since there are no quizzes or exams, only essays (which he lets you peer review in class!) I would love to take an English class with him again. |

Peter Witte is one of the best teachers/professor I've ever had! He is super caring, fun, and chill. His classes were always engaging and fun, never boring. If you have the opportunity to take one of his course, I definitely recommend! There is not much work, other than reading the books he assigns, which are always fun and interesting reads. |

Professor Ewing is probably the sweetest professor at UMD. She cares about her students and is genuinely thrilled to see them succeed, making for a fun and encouraging class environment. While the workload itself is light and manageable, class discussions are always interesting and intellectually stimulating. If you are thinking of taking this class, take it! |

Professor Ewing is a great professor. She works hard to support her students and makes the class meaningful. The workload is fairly light- consists of reading novels and occasional papers. Ewing facilitates in-depth conversations about the pieces of children's literature that are being studied. I highly recommend this class to anyone looking to re-ignite their reading spark and to anyone that is looking for an upper-level English class. Love this class! |

Kos is an awesome dude, engages his audience and makes you really think of the material. Also I just like his entire approach to accountability, he doesn't force anyone to do anything, it is up to us to do the work. Super chill dude and class was always a good time. |
