ENGL489P Expecting an A Anonymous 11/17/2022 |
I'm writing this now because this is when people are registering/looking at reviews and I want the world to know how much I adore Dr. Coleman. This is my second class with her, and she is a profoundly bright individual with a humorous flair and a passion for what she does. When you are her student, expect an understanding professor who listens to the needs or her students and adjusts class time and assignments accordingly. Expect a professor who does engaging lectures and cracks jokes with her dry humor that you'll need to listen closely to in order to understand. Expect a knowledgable professor who is an expert in her field and obviously very passionate about her studies. Expect a very real and authentic human who encourages you when you do well and pushes you when she knows you can do better. She conducts herself with empathy, professionalism, and wit. Take her courses. You'll be glad you did. |

I really just don't understand the reviews in here that are simply bashing this professor. Having had her for two different classes so far, I can easily say that she is one of my favorite professors at this institution. She is incredibly knowledgeable about her field of study, she is both pleasant and polite, she understands that her students have other classes and responsibilities to attend to and is very accommodating on that account, and she has a dry and wit-filled sense of humor that is unrivaled by anyone I've ever had the pleasure to communicate with. She expects students to put forth effort in her class, but is able to see when her framing for a particular topic has been insufficient and works to alter the class accordingly. Her class is almost guaranteed to get off-schedule, but she discusses any changes to the syllabus in class and sends out numerous notifications to ensure that even those absent are aware of what is expected in the coming week. I have never had a professor been as flexible as she is; she even provides students with the ability to use one free 2-day extension on any major assignment, no questions asked, if the student so chooses, and I have witnessed her give extensions to students who have already used this free pass as well. While she may seem slightly elderly and perhaps curmudgeony, she stays up-to-date on contemporary culture and seems to even be fascinated by it. The other day, I had a conversation with her on the strengths and weaknesses of comedy duo Key & Peele, and I'm pretty sure she's seen more of their sketches than I have. Point being, if you are looking for a class you can just coast through completely stress-free, then yes this professor might not be the one for you, but also college might not be right for you and you should re-consider your priorities. However, if you are interested in learning a great deal about a wide variety of topics and expanding your mode of thought and understanding of the English language, all while having a pretty good time, then don't hesitate to register for Professor Coleman's section. As long as you try in this class, she will recognize your effort and reward you accordingly. She is not one of those professors with lofty aspirations that her students will become experts in her field by the end of the semester; she just wants you to put in the effort and show that you care about what you are talking about (and the amount of personal choice she allows in her assignments makes it pretty easy for you to do that). If you are an English major at this university, I would argue that it would be a severe detriment to have never experienced one of Coleman's classes before graduating. |

I have never in my life had a teacher like this woman and I hope I never do again. To me, she failed as a professor. I think from the beginning, she decided that she was not and did not want to help me. Therefore she didnt. I actually got punished in this class for trying to actively engage with a teacher. I put alot of effort into this class and got no effort back from her. She is very into herself and discriminated against me because I was younger than most of the class. I have never in my life experienced or heard of a teacher coming to a student and telling them to drop after they have been very aware of the enourmous effort being put forth. I will never take a class with her again. |
