Professor Coleman is a nice professor, allows redos for all assignments but the final so it's easy to get a good grade even if you didn't do well the first time. Always has time for questions etc. Values participation and attendance a lot so if you're not going to go to her class don't take it. Discussion boards are worth 40% of your grade but are easy to complete, the rest is split between 2 short essays and one final paper plus attendance and participation. Very knowledgable in her area of teaching.

Professor Coleman's Iliad course was my favorite class of this semester! She is incredibly passionate about this subject - because of this she can get quite rambly, so I'd recommend taking her for a fun subject you're at least somewhat interested in. For example, I was not super interested in the Iliad specifically, but as an English major, her enthusiasm for the story was infectious. Her elms page is pretty chaotic and her assignments can be unnecessarily wordy, but she is a very caring professor and will clarify and adjust per student request. Very understanding with extensions. Also make sure you follow the formatting for her essays - she takes off a lot if you forget to add things like an appendix if she asks for it. Overall a very fun professor who loves her subject and students a lot. I learned a lot from this class and I'd definitely recommend taking it as long as you're okay parsing through long instructions!

Professor Coleman means well, BUT TRY AND TEST OUT OF THIS COURSE. Being online it is horribly taught, and the final is worth 90% of the grade. This led to me giving no effort on the weekly quizzes, and not paying attention in class. Quizzes are nowhere similar to the content in class. AVOID.

I'm writing this now because this is when people are registering/looking at reviews and I want the world to know how much I adore Dr. Coleman. This is my second class with her, and she is a profoundly bright individual with a humorous flair and a passion for what she does. When you are her student, expect an understanding professor who listens to the needs or her students and adjusts class time and assignments accordingly. Expect a professor who does engaging lectures and cracks jokes with her dry humor that you'll need to listen closely to in order to understand. Expect a knowledgable professor who is an expert in her field and obviously very passionate about her studies. Expect a very real and authentic human who encourages you when you do well and pushes you when she knows you can do better. She conducts herself with empathy, professionalism, and wit. Take her courses. You'll be glad you did.

If you read no other review for Dr. Coleman, read this one: She's awesome. Don't listen to the haters. She's very funny, very knowledgeable, and very helpful. Look... you're gonna have to work in this class. There are readings to keep up with and she is so, so big on participation (make sure to talk!). But she also lowered the word count on the final essay by almost HALF because we asked her to. She also granted extensions left and right and allowed multiple rewrites on papers if you want to improve your grade. Sure, she has high expectations, but they're not unreasonable nor are they unattainable. If you do you work every week and ask a couple good questions each class to show that you're paying attention, you wont scrape by with an A, you will earn one EASILY. Take Coleman. She's a rock star.

I really just don't understand the reviews in here that are simply bashing this professor. Having had her for two different classes so far, I can easily say that she is one of my favorite professors at this institution. She is incredibly knowledgeable about her field of study, she is both pleasant and polite, she understands that her students have other classes and responsibilities to attend to and is very accommodating on that account, and she has a dry and wit-filled sense of humor that is unrivaled by anyone I've ever had the pleasure to communicate with. She expects students to put forth effort in her class, but is able to see when her framing for a particular topic has been insufficient and works to alter the class accordingly. Her class is almost guaranteed to get off-schedule, but she discusses any changes to the syllabus in class and sends out numerous notifications to ensure that even those absent are aware of what is expected in the coming week. I have never had a professor been as flexible as she is; she even provides students with the ability to use one free 2-day extension on any major assignment, no questions asked, if the student so chooses, and I have witnessed her give extensions to students who have already used this free pass as well. While she may seem slightly elderly and perhaps curmudgeony, she stays up-to-date on contemporary culture and seems to even be fascinated by it. The other day, I had a conversation with her on the strengths and weaknesses of comedy duo Key & Peele, and I'm pretty sure she's seen more of their sketches than I have. Point being, if you are looking for a class you can just coast through completely stress-free, then yes this professor might not be the one for you, but also college might not be right for you and you should re-consider your priorities. However, if you are interested in learning a great deal about a wide variety of topics and expanding your mode of thought and understanding of the English language, all while having a pretty good time, then don't hesitate to register for Professor Coleman's section. As long as you try in this class, she will recognize your effort and reward you accordingly. She is not one of those professors with lofty aspirations that her students will become experts in her field by the end of the semester; she just wants you to put in the effort and show that you care about what you are talking about (and the amount of personal choice she allows in her assignments makes it pretty easy for you to do that). If you are an English major at this university, I would argue that it would be a severe detriment to have never experienced one of Coleman's classes before graduating.

She's a very unfair grader. On one of my assignments she read my labels wrong, and corrected the paper based on her misperceptions. She looked like an idiot because of it. Then when I pointed out her mistake, she did not even respond or bother to regrade the assignment. Do not take her.

I have never in my life had a teacher like this woman and I hope I never do again. To me, she failed as a professor. I think from the beginning, she decided that she was not and did not want to help me. Therefore she didnt. I actually got punished in this class for trying to actively engage with a teacher. I put alot of effort into this class and got no effort back from her. She is very into herself and discriminated against me because I was younger than most of the class. I have never in my life experienced or heard of a teacher coming to a student and telling them to drop after they have been very aware of the enourmous effort being put forth. I will never take a class with her again.

There is no doubt that this is a fascinating and well run course. Coleman seems like an experienced instructor and knows how to run a classroom well. That being said, there is a tremendous amount of reading (it is an HL...) and Coleman assumes that you actually read the material assigned. I did find Coleman's personality extremely irritating. She is very old school in a certain sense. Often, she reminded me of an old witch. She takes tremendous pride in her ability to memorize specific details from the Iliad. I found her tremendously arrogant. This plays a role in her grading. You have to write two papers for the course. They are not long papers and not very hard to write, but she is very particular about what she is looking for in the paper. Some of the grading was pretty silly. Like all online participation the result was forced participation which never yields ideal results. And its just a pain really. We had a group project which i thought was pretty dumb at first, but our class actually had some pretty creative presentations. I think that is more credit thought to the strong group of students in my particular class, then to her as an instructor. Also, you know those kinds of people who are convinced they are funny but in reality are not funny at all? Well she is one of them, and she really does not get it at all. She really is not funny and its terrible that she thinks she is, and one brave students is gonna have to save her from humiliation one day and tell her the truth. All in all, the course itself is fascinating and if you can ignore the instructor's personality and try to enjoy the readings then this is a great course for you. I did learn a lot compared to the honors seminars i have taken. But her personality...yeah.

Coleman's pretty awesome for an honors seminar. We had two papers. Straightforward, she grades relatively easy, like she'll mark up your paper a lot but you'll still get an A-; and out of the two papers she'll let you re-write one at the end of the semester. We had a group project, just show some effort and you'll get full points on that. You do have to participate, so you definitely need to do the readings, because if you don't do the readings then she'll know and give a pop quiz. her reading quizzes online were straightforward, but required you to do the readings. the discussion board was meh, it was 20% of our grade so make sure you actually do that and don't slack off and try to do it all at the end of the semester, because that doesn't work. But if you need an HL take coleman's just know that it's an HL so there are readings that YOU HAVE TO DO, you can't BS the readings and think you'll do okay, because you won't. But she's a nice professor and nice to speak to during office hours.

Journalism majors are required to take this class if they don't get an 80% or higher on the diagnostic test. I was pretty clueless when it came to grammar and I got a 72 on the diagnostic. I was optimistic about learning about grammar anyways, but it is honestly in your best interest to test out of the class! The weekly quizzes are worth 10%, and the final is worth 90%. This may sound bizarre, but in the end it makes sense. The weekly quizzes test you on very specific grammar rules and very challenging. To be successful on these weekly quizzes, you'll have to put significant effort to really understand the rules, probably as much effort as a 3-credit course. The final is like the diagnostic where you have to know rules like who vs. whom, that vs. which, etc. After taking the course, getting a B or A on the final should not be hard. Coleman herself is very knowledgeable about grammar. The only drawback is that she tries to squeeze so much content into a once-a-week class. She is very helpful outside of class and provides review sessions before the final. This class was a small nuisance, but you do learn a lot about grammar. Just try to test out!

Professor Coleman is a kind woman, but her teaching style is bizarre. Emails would fly out throughout the week saying that homework assignments were due Thursday by 12PM, Saturday by 1PM, and various other times. Assignments were sporadic, and we had to purchase MyCompLab when we were only required to use it 3 or 4 times. Homework is weighed too heavily, and that was the reason why so many students in my class had Cs and below mid-semester. Homework grades are not reflective of the efforts that you put into the class, therefore you need to work much harder than you feel you need to in order to do well in this class. Although she was a nice professor, I found her to be almost cold in personal interactions. I would not take another course with her.

This class was interesting and engaging. We had to learn a lot of language/discourse specific terms and tools, but Prof. Coleman did not expect or require you to know them inside and out. As long as you make a good faith effort to understand them for discussions, she seemed satisfied. Class periods were a mix of discussions and lectures. Some days she would talk at us the whole time but there were many days where we watched/read material and analyzed it. The papers weren't bad. Topic prompts were broad. Honestly, I thought she was an easy grader, but I know many of my classmates disagreed. I was surprised to receive an A in this class. I probably gave it 6 out of 10 on the effort scale. I think Prof. Coleman is a good teacher with high but not unreasonable expectations.

You should work as hard as possible to place out of this class. People who place out of this class and take it for better grammar knowledge end up hating their decision. The concepts are familiar enough, but there just isn't enough time to prepare for each quiz. The class should be 3 credits because it takes 3 credit time and effort to get an A. If you really know grammar the final is suppose to resemble the diagnostic so no worries and quizzes are ten percent of the grade, although the final is ninety. Coleman is a great teacher with a huge challenge. Place out the class, but if you can't study and treat this like 3 credits if you want an A. I hope i get a C.
