AMAZING CLASS and GREAT PROFESSOR!! Dr. Maring can sometimes be a bit boring in lecture, but I found all topics covered in this class to be super engaging. Exams were fair, she provided study guides for each of them. I did not find that the required textbook was neccessary, but 'Half The SKy' was an amazing book that I'm so glad to have read. |

Dr. Maring is a friendly and nice professor. I never really paid attention in class but still ended up doing well because she posts study guides and is lenient on grading the written portion. Lectures were pretty boring and she does try to have interactive activities. The book she chose for the course, Half the Sky, was interesting to read, she does like to ask about different stories from the book. She lists reading for the textbook but I never read them because she'd provide the study guide anyway. There's an assignment every week but they are graded based on how much thought you put into them and not on accuracy. There are two big assignments that she gives you plenty of time to work on. |

This class is required for anyone in GPH, and it was honestly the easiest class I had all semester. I would definitely say that Dr. Maring is a pretty good professor, though not the most engaging as she has a tendency to read off the slides. She is very kind and wants to get to know about you and your culture. The exams are light, especially since she made study guides for them that almost render the textbook useless, but I'd recommend that you at least skim the assigned chapters for Half the Sky, as they help tremendously with the open-ended sections of exams. The projects in the class are equally simple--just a research paper that might take a day or two and a 15-minute interview with someone in your class from a different culture. There are also some "low stakes assignments" that are just like watching a video and answering a discussion post, but they're sometimes hidden in Canvas modules, so make sure to keep an eye out for those. |

I had Dr. Maring for both a GPH scholars-required FMSC course as well as the menstrual health supporting course (A in both)! She's genuinely one of the sweetest professors you'll ever meet at UMD. Super receptive to concerns about grades, very communicative, and wholeheartedly wants her students to be as passionate about the material she teaches as she is. To a previous comment negatively reviewing FMSC110: it was not bad at all. 8am was a completely reasonable time to hold the class since it took into consideration of the time difference of the students attending BHU in India, where it's already evening for them. The final project was agreeably difficult in terms of functioning as a group with the time difference, but the workload was definitely manageable. Like I mentioned before, Dr. Maring and our then TA Cara were very understanding when it came to our workload. Just please, please communicate! Dr. Maring always went out of her way to provide us with snacks and chai tea (or regular tea) during each lesson, and even poured out the chai for us in small cups as we took our quizzes. She's sooo wholesome; only ever kind words for her. |

I am in the global public health scholars program so this course was required. But if you have the chance, please take this course if you love to learn about families and children on a global spectrum, specifically within health topics. DR. MARING IS SO NICE, and she is so understanding of any and all mishaps. If you have the chance to have her as a professor please take her! She also is a great professor to get to know and is always willing to support you in anyway. Love her and love the class! |

In retrospect, I really appreciate the depth of this class. I learned a lot through the research project we were assigned (don't procrastinate!) and the cultural interview project was a fun activity. Dr. Maring holds weekly office hours and is very willing to answer questions. |

A very nice and forgiving professor but can be quite boring at times. She basically reads off the slides the whole lecture, but the class was very easy so it did not matter much. No final exam either. |

Dr. Maring is an amazing professor! She is super nice and super easy so class was not hard at all. You don't really need to pay attention in lecture because she gives a study guide and all of the content is on there. Easy A TAKE HER |

Prof Maring is amazing! She's so nice and makes class really interesting. She always includes examples about her family and makes the material very relatable. Tests are relatively easy. Definitely take her for fmsc110s if you are in GPH scholars. |
