I am in the global public health scholars program so this course was required. But if you have the chance, please take this course if you love to learn about families and children on a global spectrum, specifically within health topics. DR. MARING IS SO NICE, and she is so understanding of any and all mishaps. If you have the chance to have her as a professor please take her! She also is a great professor to get to know and is always willing to support you in anyway. Love her and love the class! |

I hate to leave this review but honestly I feel like I have to. First, let me say this class is very interesting and teaches about important concepts. However, this class was miserable for me for 2 reasons. First, the class is at 8am and if you don't plan on being there for every class you are screwed. A lot of your grade depends on your attendance. Second, this class is a global classroom course so you are taking this course with students from another campus in another country. This semester we took this class with students from India which was really nice. Here's the catch, the reason this class is at 8am is because it's the only 'appropriate' time Banaras Hindu University (BHU) students and UMD students can meet. When it's 8am here it's 6pm in India. This is where the class really lost me. Our final project group was to be made up of 4 people, 2 students from UMD and 2 students from BHU. The final project is worth an insane amount of your grade but due to the time difference, it is extremely hard to find a time to work with your group members that don't live in the U.S. . Towards the end of the semester my classes got extremely busy and I just could not consistently wake up at 7am to make it to this 8am. This made it impossible to work on the project and my grade quickly went from an A to a low C. I completely understand that students are expected to make it to every class. However, this class seemed very idealistic to me and the students do not have much room for error. This really disappoints me because a class dedicated to menstrual health is the coolest thing. I have yet to take a class at UMD that I felt I would fail for missing 5> less classes until this semester. If you're a commuter, a busy upperclassmen, or just a student who wants to do well in a class but their grade just depends on attendance, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Oh, and just for reference, I had all A's in my other classes this semester and I took 19 credits but got a C in this one! |

In retrospect, I really appreciate the depth of this class. I learned a lot through the research project we were assigned (don't procrastinate!) and the cultural interview project was a fun activity. Dr. Maring holds weekly office hours and is very willing to answer questions. |

A very nice and forgiving professor but can be quite boring at times. She basically reads off the slides the whole lecture, but the class was very easy so it did not matter much. No final exam either. |

Dr. Maring is an amazing professor! She is super nice and super easy so class was not hard at all. You don't really need to pay attention in lecture because she gives a study guide and all of the content is on there. Easy A TAKE HER |

What an interesting class. The class overall talked about both families and public health, but more public health. I could connect my learning to previous learning and it was so reinforcing. There were quizzes that were open note, lectures that were recorded, and a few assignments/discussions. We had a larger project where we interviewed a classmate and talked about our backgrounds. Great if you get a great partner!! Dr. Maring provides great and supportive feedback. The class will be challenging if you do not watch the videos, especially because the quizzes are based on them. The textbook/book wasn’t necessary in my opinion. Would take again & would take another class with Dr. Maring! |

I'm taking the asynchronous version of this class during the summer. It bugs me that all she does in the lecture videos are read from her pre-written notes and go through some slides. The course doesn't seem well prepared. There are a lot of assignments that are due every day and the instructions given are not clear enough. Unless you have no other choice, I recommend not to take this class with Dr. Maring, and not to take this class in general in the summer. I don't know how Dr. Maring expects students to read two entire books AND watch all her lecture videos, all while doing at least two assignments per day and interacting with other students for almost 15 days. |

Prof Maring is amazing! She's so nice and makes class really interesting. She always includes examples about her family and makes the material very relatable. Tests are relatively easy. Definitely take her for fmsc110s if you are in GPH scholars. |

Dr. Maring is a very kind, approachable woman. Her class is very easy-4 midterms, 6 online quizzes, and a few in class activities. She also shares a lot of stories from her own experience parenting, which is very cute. However, I will add that she does dumb down course material quite a bit, and her lectures move very slowly. Not the best class/professor if you're looking to stay engaged or challenged. |
