Dr. Schull is overall a great professor, but there are some things to look out for. Attendance is not mandatory, but there are in-class discussions that will replace discussion boards if you show up. She tracks this with an online QR code & the in-class discussions are much shorter than her discussion boards. She will NOT accept late work unless circumstances are dire and documented. She mentions that assignments submitted 15 minutes late are still late etc. This can be frustrating because the ELM page is somewhat chaotic & assignments can be easily missed. She can be a bit rude in some interactions and her email etiquette could use some improvement. Lectures are somewhat engaging and her examples are unique. The classes are typically unavoidable for FMSC majors (because she teaches two major ones), but if you do your work on time & follow the rubrics given, you will do well. I |

If you're a FMSC major, you'll need to take Dr. Wallen - she is the only instructor who teaches FMSC432, aging and families. I'm so sorry that this is the case. Dr. Wallen is, by far, the worst FMSC instructor I have ever had. On the first day of class, she appears nice, warm, and giving. Her syllabus seems pretty straight forward, her workload is a joke (3 exams and 1 paper? That's it?!), and the course content looks and sounds simple enough. What could go wrong, right? Well - everything. I took such copious notes in her class, wrote down every word she said, and watched every video we were supposed to watch. I still struggled to scrape Bs on her exams. And she doesn't curve! Even when the average on our exam ws a 58. In an effing Family Science course. But that's not even the worst part. Since she seems so warm and giving on the first day of classes, you'd expect her to be responsive to student concerns. Extra points on the exams? An explanation as to how the entire class did so poorly? Perhaps a suggestion on how to improve our future scores? Nope. nothing. She refuses to help students, tricks us with questions that don't even reflect what she teaches in class, and doesn't care about the students' concerns like most of the other FMSC professors do. I'd say do not take this course with her, but you unfortunately don't have a choice. I'm really very sorry about that. Try to listen closely, take good notes, and remember to do as well as you can...because she won't help you out if you don't. |

Wallen is the most disorganized professor I have ever had before. She does not follow the syllabus. One day it will say there is a movie and she will lecture. She puts on WAY too many movies and then will ask the most specific questions on the exams. The grade is based off of 3 exams (100 pts each) a group paper, a group presentation and participation. She does not give very in depth rubrics so it gives you the chance to get off topic, which is not good. She is very approachable and nice, but just needs to have a more organized course. |

The material is interesting. As a lecturer, Wallen is great. But as a teacher, she is unorganzied and will put on alot of videos. She is approachable but also very inconsiderate of your concerns as a student. Not a professor I personally would take a class with agian. |
