I took this as an online summer class and it was definitely one of the easiest A's I have ever gotten. Everything is really straightforward - watch lecture videos, participate in 9 discussions, take an open-book one-hour test at the end of each week (3 tests in total, and every single question was easy). By the end of the class, I lost a grand total of 2 points out of the possible 500. The lecture videos are pretty boring (mostly because of her voice, to be honest), and there are a lot of them, but she includes a ton of videos which keeps it interesting. There's not really any need for the readings in the "required" textbook, they basically repeat what was said in lecture. And Dr. Wallen's nice enough to include full transcripts so you don't even have to watch the lecture videos. Dr. Wallen was very responsive to emails and lets you know where you lost points (if any) on every assignment. The class is super easy and you learn a lot of cool information, take it! Especially if you're into humanitarian aid or you're a bio major interested in diseases/disabilities.

If you're a FMSC major, you'll need to take Dr. Wallen - she is the only instructor who teaches FMSC432, aging and families. I'm so sorry that this is the case. Dr. Wallen is, by far, the worst FMSC instructor I have ever had. On the first day of class, she appears nice, warm, and giving. Her syllabus seems pretty straight forward, her workload is a joke (3 exams and 1 paper? That's it?!), and the course content looks and sounds simple enough. What could go wrong, right? Well - everything. I took such copious notes in her class, wrote down every word she said, and watched every video we were supposed to watch. I still struggled to scrape Bs on her exams. And she doesn't curve! Even when the average on our exam ws a 58. In an effing Family Science course. But that's not even the worst part. Since she seems so warm and giving on the first day of classes, you'd expect her to be responsive to student concerns. Extra points on the exams? An explanation as to how the entire class did so poorly? Perhaps a suggestion on how to improve our future scores? Nope. nothing. She refuses to help students, tricks us with questions that don't even reflect what she teaches in class, and doesn't care about the students' concerns like most of the other FMSC professors do. I'd say do not take this course with her, but you unfortunately don't have a choice. I'm really very sorry about that. Try to listen closely, take good notes, and remember to do as well as you can...because she won't help you out if you don't.

Wallen is the most disorganized professor I have ever had before. She does not follow the syllabus. One day it will say there is a movie and she will lecture. She puts on WAY too many movies and then will ask the most specific questions on the exams. The grade is based off of 3 exams (100 pts each) a group paper, a group presentation and participation. She does not give very in depth rubrics so it gives you the chance to get off topic, which is not good. She is very approachable and nice, but just needs to have a more organized course.

The material is interesting. As a lecturer, Wallen is great. But as a teacher, she is unorganzied and will put on alot of videos. She is approachable but also very inconsiderate of your concerns as a student. Not a professor I personally would take a class with agian.

This Professor is a great person and has a great heart, but if you want organization and to know your status in the class you won't get it. Papers took forever to get back. Exams were tricky, you really don't know what to study. Exams are multiple choice but choices are vague and wording can be easily misconstrued. I’m not saying don’t take her class, I’m just saying be prepared for stress.

I went on a winter term study abroad to Mexico with her. The class was amazing and her reading choices were appropriate. She's a very nice and intelligent woman.
