French 659 will explore the theme of sexuality as it is articulated in the nineteenth-century novel. The nineteenth-century sees the rise of feminism as well as a gay/lesbian collective awareness alongside the emergence of tendentious studies by the medical establishment of transgressive sexualities. The novel is an ideal vehicle through which to articulate cultural anxieties related to sexuality, among other issues. French 659 will proceed chronologically, moving through the major literary movements of the nineteenth century.
