Special Topic in Nineteenth Century French Literature; Literature and the Press in 19th-Century France: Recovering Print Culture in the Digital Age

Explores the relationship of literature and the press in 19th-century France. We will read major works alongside ephemeral material (advertisements, chronicles, faits divers) and consider the role of mass media in the development of new forms and genres, with particular attention to the intersections of gender and genre. Students will acquire methods in digital scholarship as part of a collaborative research project on a recently digitized corpus of periodicals. Taught in French.
