Seminar; Science Fiction in the Enlightenment

Taught in French. In this course we will explore the intellectual margins of the French Enlightenment and read fiction as thought experiment: discoveries of fantastic, utopian worlds, fairy tales, time travels, etc. We will consider what "science" and "fiction" meant in the 18th century. Authors include Fontenelle, Marivaux, Tiphaigne, Lubert, Du Maillet, Mercier.
