GEOG416 Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/06/2025 |
Dr. Feng is cool. This course was very simple in structure: 4 papers, each demonstrating a different environmental/economic model. It took me a while to warm up to this course because Dr. Feng is very long-winded which makes it hard to stay focused, and we spend a lot of time going over how to do very basic things in excel. I ended up liking this course however because the models we learn how to use are actually very useful for assessing environmental impact (even if they are pretty basic). System dynamics modeling is actually pretty fun, you spend 2 classes just playing a game (fish banks). Rubrics for assignments are a bit vague but you can always ask for clarification. There is a very generous late policy (5% deduction/day) which is always nice. He has a policy where you must get a passing grade on all 4 assignments to pass the class, which at first seems annoying but makes sense because it prevents you from just checking out later in the semester if you have a good grade already. I would recommend this course if: you are interested in the relation between economics and the environment, are interested in getting some practice using excel and writing scientific papers I would NOT recommend this course if you are not interested in the material - it will be an absolute slog to get through |

Dr. Feng is nice and fairly responsive to emails, but his rubrics are way too vague and he does not clearly state exactly what he is looking for. He will take points off for not mentioning certain things in essays, but will not state that you needed to include that in the rubric. As well, he is not the best at explaining certain topics. And the examples that he provides may sometimes not completely align with the assignment and can actually make it more confusing than it needs to be. That being said, I would not recommend GEOG416 if you are a procrastinator, do not like writing scientific papers, and/or struggle to compute calculations on excel. |
