GEOL110 Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/06/2025 |
Karla herself is a really nice person, but with that being said, this class is miserable. It isnt impossible, its a 3 hour lab and everyone is usually out at least an hour early, theres a 5 question quiz every week, and the labs are maybe 4-5 pages each. But as a class that is marketed for non-geology majors, I truly don't understand how we are supposed to know a majority of the content. She gets incredibly specific in the questions on the quizzes make it nearly impossible to get a 100. She's kind of nit picky with the labs, but i will say she does give a lot of help, and it is useful. There is also for some reason a final test? instead of a practical, which i dont get and its long but u get a cheat sheet ig. Karla is great but the content and grading make this class a trip. If you have to take this course you will be fine but if u have the option to not I would. |

The lab is harder than you might think, but it was okay. Tracey Centorbi is a nightmare though |

Had this dude as my TA, super chill and helps you through the lab if you have any questions. Ask him if you have any questions and he'll guide you well |

I had an A the whole time, but that final exam messed me up bad. It feels like a four credit course but it's only one credit. Do the extra credit. The extra credit only put me up by 1% but that was the difference between a B (3.0) and B+ (3.3). Terrible thing is that a 89.99 doesn't equal a 90.00. So if you have an 89.99 then that's a B+. Yes, you heard that right. They don't round up. I did like my TA for the class. Please rely on other people in the class too. You have a quiz every morning. Half the quiz will be on the material covered in lab the previous week and the material going to be covered in that lab. So study!!! It was a fun class and many of what I learned help me with GEOL100. |

Tytrice is an excellent TA for this lab. He is vey knowledge about the course and tried to make it as easy for everyone. The class and quizzes overall are heavily based on the textbook so make sure to get that book. Would definitely recommend her for future students! |

Lucas is really nice and understanding. We have a small quiz each week before lab that is usually pretty hard but if you read and go over the slides posted it isn't too bad. My lab was set to be 3 hours but we usually got to leave once we finished the work (most of the time it took 1.5-2 hours) |

James is about as good as it gets for a TA. That's not to say the class was easy though. There's a reason my grade isn't the bang average. I also find it super annoying how the cutoffs are so against you. It's practically impossible to get a B+, B-, A- or A+ just because the margins are so slim for those. So it's basically an A for the ones that study hard, a B for the average students and a C for the less than average. |

This lab is difficult in some areas and really easy in others. It is taught by TAs, so you will never meet the lab director. Your grade really depends on the TAs and how they think you performed on your lab work. My TA was generally very helpful and guided us through any questions we had. For this lab you will work through the lab manual, have a pre-reading every week before lab, then have a quiz on that reading at the start of your lab period. These quizzes can be extremely tricky, so make sure you read, and read carefully. It is apparently one of the easiest labs you can take, so I would recommend it. This course doesn't demand much attention rather than pre-reading and soaking in the information. |

James was a great TA. Knew what he was doing and prepared me well for the final. Class was a bit strenuous at times, but he made it fun |

James is so kind and helpful during lab. He is always willing to help and answers any and all questions you have. He is never rude or belittling and is very passionate about the subject. He is one of the best TAs I have had and makes the 3 hour lab a lot more bearable. |

Big dawg. He knows everyone hates the lab so much but is chill about it and he will give the answers if you ask for them. Sometimes he grades harshly and idk if its his fault or not but when you ask he always says it was in the pre lab reading which it never is. |

The lab was horrible but it was easy. There was so much work involved and if it wasn't for the extra credit offered at the end I'd have a very different grade than the one I ended up with. |

Bill McDonough is the coolest, nerdiest professor. 10/10 would recommend. His rock puns are so gneiss and I phyllite if you gave this professor a chance you would not be disappointed. If you put in the effort, you will of quartz get an A. I love Bill and I love his passion for minerals. He rocks. |

He's a cool guy with a Boston accent. Only problem with him is that his lectures are pretty bad. He dwells on a single subject forever and never finishes the lecture so the only way to learn is through the book, which is essentially a picture book with captions under them. After reading the book, you would think the exams would be easy. Then the exams come and you wonder where these questions came from. The first exam average was a 50%... In conclusion, the exams are ridiculously hard that he made a revision to the syllabus saying he'll drop the lowest exam grade. He also had to make the final open book because everyone was failing exams throughout the semester. He doesn't curve. Overall, a great guy, bad class. Don't take it. |
