Geographic Information Systems for Redistricting

Prerequisite: GVPT392. Recommended: Recommended: at least one course in statistics. Local, state and federal governments must periodically draw and redraw political boundaries to account for shifts in the population. This course will be an introduction and overview of district drawing and redistricting as an important application of GIS research in political science and public policy. This class will equip students to use convenient GIS tools to create and consider alternative district scenarios to find the best possible solution. After finishing this class students will be able to draw districts to define police beats, sales territories, congressional and state legislative districts, school and fire protection districts, and numerous other boundaries.
