James Gimpel GVPT429B Anonymous 03/14/2024	Nice professor and genuinely cares about his students success. Lectures are long but the slides and some other readings are posted on the course. There are about 6 homework throughout the semester that aren't too bad. I would say it's a pretty low committment class

James Gimpel GVPT423 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/12/2023	I took this class since I was interested in content and do not feel I learned a lot from Professor Gimpel, since I felt most of the class was expanding upon and explaining concepts I already knew. Lectures were 3 hours long largely of him rambling which I was not the biggest fan of, but the course overall was still interesting due to the readings, assignments and few discussions we had. Professor Gimpel did curve our midterm and we otherwise only have had 4 HWs and a final, so it is not too hard either, just occasionally boring.
James Gimpel GVPT423 Expecting an A Anonymous 05/18/2022	Gimpel is pretty chill, and teaches pretty well. Class is 4 homeworks or short papers in different formats, as well as a midterm and a final. MC and some written parts. A LOT of reading, but interesting. Lecture is just going over slides, and studying for exams consists of learning a bunch of terms and concepts. If you are interested in elections, take it, 100% worth it.
James Gimpel GVPT423 Expecting an A Anonymous 05/20/2021	Dr. Gimpel was a good professor! The essays and exams are based heavily on the readings/lecture notes, so reading the required books is really important, but I thought they were easy to understand and more interesting than other class readings. Not many assignments besides the readings. He really seemed to care about his students and the topics, but more class interaction would've been nice.
James Gimpel GVPT423H Anonymous 12/09/2020	Dr. Gimpel was a great professor! You could tell he genuinely cared about students and tried his best to make the class as interesting as possible. I would take him again! I would suggest anyone who takes this class should do the readings and look at the homeworks in advance since they are five-page papers.
James Gimpel Expecting an A- ccon 05/14/2015	He is a really nice guy, just not the best teacher... He had slides that he used and just looked at them the whole time, barely looked at or interacted with the class. Sometimes he wrote on the white board..? Again, he's a really nice guy, its just hard to get involved with the class. One time he started an actual discussion that got the students involved, and it was actually pretty interesting debate/talk, but it only happened one time. Take the class if you are good with ArcMap or want to work with that (that's the lab portion taught by the TA and basically all the grade is based on), but not if you're looking for a super interesting discussion/lecture class.
James Gimpel Expecting an A Anonymous 03/26/2013	DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH GIMPEL. I am sure he would be a good professor in a qualitative class where all that needs to be done is lecture, but gvpt227 is a qualitative class based on statistics and he is not the right teacher for this. He gets off topic when giving examples, the lectures are not relevant to the exams, and although a formula and numbers are given I have NO IDEA what the relevance of the numbers is to analyzing the data. But in this class that is fine, application is not tested at all. He lectures with his head facing down towards the projector and focused on what he is saying, so even when there is a question he has no idea. Its a pretty awful class. I'm sure the grades will be fine but if you do not have to take this class for a gov requirement DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH GIMPEL.
James Gimpel GVPT423 Expecting an A Anonymous 04/02/2008	Good class, good teacher. Lecture was engaging and enjoyable. A lot of readings, but they weren't difficult to understand. Tests were fairly straight forward and if you came to class, or at least did readings, nothing suprised you. Homeworks were ok, but more work than expected. He seems to think that writing 5 or 6 or 7 pages, due the very next week he assigns them is normal. But we only had 4 or 5 a whole semester.
