Professor Calvo is literally the meme of 'I am just a chill guy.' He is super nice and will bring food to class, and make each class more like a conversation and not much of a lecture. He is pretty chill grading-wise, and the assignments are simple. He is also always trolling, but joking or not he speaks in the same tone so it can be really hard to tell if hes serious or not at times (most of the time he's joking). My biggest downside is that he is one of those teachers who are not online. Minimal activity on canvas or resources on the class page. There is never a rubric, written instructions, or anything of the sort. It makes the otherwise simple and interesting assignments frustrating at times because the expectations can be super unclear. That being said, he's always willing to answer questions, but even if you ask as many as you can (he can take a whole class just helping out one person while the rest of the class sits there), you may still have confusion over what you're supposed to turn in. There were also no TAs to ask questions to. But then most of the time it's ok because you turn in what you think is best and get a good grade. Deadlines were always flexible as well. Overall, it was one of my favorite classes. I did not have a single bad time in class because he talked about things in a super interesting way that made me think about things from a different perspective. Not many assignments, and the few were simple (yet confusing without much instruction). The class was less about social media and more about surveys and the intentions behind people's actions.

Dr. Calvo is the GOAT, his lectures are a little rambly sometimes, but his assignments are simple, and he is always willing to help out. His assignments are sometimes unclear because he doesn't post them on canvas all the time, but he explains them in class well. He brings pastries to class a lot of time and is just a really fun and chill professor. Absolutely recommend this class if you are on the B.S. track for GVPT or IR.

This class essentially consisted of coming in, sitting down, and listening to him speak for the entirety of the class about various news articles or social media posts. There were absolutely no rubrics, no details for the assignments, no explanation of concepts, no feedback on grades, and an extremely bare canvas page that expanded on nothing. In order to know how to do an assignment you basically have to piece together bits of information that he mention for 30 seconds at the beginning or end of class. He will help with assignments if you ask, but what would be even more beneficial than just watching him do your qualtrics for you or code for you would be explaining what is actually going on, what he expects etc. The content is easy, but. the absolute absence of directions and rubrics makes this class a pain.

If you want to learn anything useful, take another class. Content is not hard but he does not know how to explain or expand on any of the concepts. No rubrics for assignments and no feedback on the grades given.

I loved Professor Calvo's class - but it is nothing like any other government class you've likely taken. There's a focus on survey methodology and political psychology in this class, so get ready to explore big concepts like network theory and Qualtrics. Expect little coding, but what code you will have to do is mostly independent work. One minor gripe: no rubrics in sight in this class, but Calvo's a lenient grader so that wasn't an issue for me.
