Randolph Ontiveros is not a bad man, but oh boy does he start to get on your nerves at the end of your Keystone project. (this is the same in Humud's review as they are both responsible for this tomfoolery) Time during plenary was totally mismanaged. 20 minutes total for workshop was pointless as it was impossible to actually open the project and written advice then give advice or start a dialogue and then pivot projects when everyone only gets 5 minutes dedicated to receiving advice. Realistically it should be 20 minutes PER PERSON. Every other assignment in plenary required a lot from us in not a lot of time and almost always felt like busy-work despite the stress we felt during plenary to get it done. When I asked Randolph if there was a plan in place in case I had a medical episode the day of Symposium, a response of "well it hasn't happened before" was totally inappropriate in my opinion. This was asked after him not noticing not 1, not 2, but THREE convulsive episodes that look a whole lot like seizures happening in the back of the section that he bothered to show up for (that was a whole different issue, where he would just decide not to come to section and only give the UTAs at most 2 hours notice that he would not be there). There should be a game plan in place in case an emergency happens, at the very least to ease the anxiety of disabled students about their grade on their final presentation that has such a tight timing. He also said that we could "negotiate down" the rubric with him, but that is only after you kill yourself trying to achieve the goals that you knew that you would never make just to prove that you have done enough when they clearly have no idea how much labor goes into different art forms. Even then that negotiation was just a "prove to me in the reflection that you've done enough" and not a solid, rewritten rubric so it might be totally subjective, we have yet to see. Like I said, it seems like his heart is in the right place but I have no idea how so much of this is still such a nightmare and he is the director of the program.

I need Humud to look me in my eyes and explain to me how a documentary on black protective hairstyles is considered "crafting" or how there simply weren't enough queer projects for a panel at symposium despite there being 4 projects explicitly about trans existence and transphobia. We submitted all of these things about our project thematically and yet they all seemed to be ignored in group creation for Symposium in favor of formalistic groupings, which is particularly asinine when students have total project freedom and may be the only one doing that form. Calling out Humud specifically here as I was told that she was in charge of the Symposium grouping. Time during plenary was totally mismanaged. 20 minutes total for workshop was pointless as it was impossible to actually open the project and written advice then give advice or start a dialogue and then pivot projects when everyone only gets 5 minutes dedicated to receiving advice. Realistically it should be 20 minutes PER PERSON. Additionally, as I was the only one in my form and my group was not my target audience, I really did not receive any workable advice and was then punished for that in the final workshop grade (which was also graded by someone who had never graded my project before). Every other assignment in plenary required a lot from us in not a lot of time and almost always felt like busy-work despite the stress we felt during plenary to get it done. She's not the only professor in charge of 206 but she certainly does not make it good.

She doesn't respond to emails and makes you come to class even when there is nothing to do. The class is 100% based on how well you do on your Keystone Project and she is completely unfair when it comes to grading them. Don't pick her as your section leader, literally pick anyone else.

Dr. Humud is very nice and is always willing to chat about class projects or a student's plan for their future. She is great at bouncing ideas around and suggesting helpful things for students who are indecisive. The class load is never too much.

One of the greatest assets the Honors Humanities program had to offer when she was here. It's too bad she left UMD; the program just won't be the same without her.
