This class was super interesting and she kept us involved and was very accommodating, kind, knowledgable, and passionate. I took HIST289O as a fun elective and although there were essays to write, it was manageable and I actually had a great time writing them because they were so interesting. Rush is a slightly harder grader than the TA I had, but I would definitely recommend this class and Dr. Rush.

I took this class in Fall 2023 and really enjoyed it! I thought it was very fun and enjoyed the content, so I would take it again personally, and I did like Dr. Rush and thought she was a good teacher (but please note she wasn't the one grading my essays. our TA was, shout out to Leah) but I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't interested in the topic at all, or want an easy A with little work (the course isn't challenging but it is a good bit of work, especially writing) Pros: Very nice I asked for an extension on a paper once and she was very understanding about it! She gave them to a lot of people on that paper if I recall correctly, and I ended up getting a few extra days About 10 or 20% i think of the class grade is participation, and I personally attend lectures and answer questions frequently so it was easy points for me, though I'm not sure how heavily certain things (such as missing class) are penalized The class content is interesting! The modules are all organized in a way that's easy to follow since it has all the dates of everything and when you need to do them The midterm and exam weren't too difficult, and the essays are weighted more, but you did need to prepare beforehand for the exams Cons: The class is very writing heavy, I did alright with it but it did require a lot of work and effort, especially since some of the historical documents are hard to parse through The midterm requires you to be able to write a LOT, FAST. I managed alright but my hand hurt like hell afterwards Her slides are pretty scattered and unhelpful, so if you stop paying attention for a little bit it can be hard to follow what you missed Sometimes she can kind of go on tangents about one very specific thing, which often gets boring The citations could get annoying, she gives you a guide on how to do them (its in Chicago) but it's still difficult. Citing things is important but I'll admit I got annoyed sometimes, especially when it's a really obscure source Notes: There were assigned readings every day, but I didn't really do them and I was fine Our midterm and final focused on the keywords we learned, so make sure to note them down when you learn them! We did unfortunately have to buy a book for a class, we couldn't pirate it since there were no online copies :(

This class is going to be an A or a B automatically pretty much but it still is a hard and time consuming class. You also have to show up for every class and they can get boring. She is a nice lady and I would recommend the class to anyone who is good at writing long papers. If you are it is a free easy A. If you are not then it is still a probable A or B but will feel frustrating and hard (the essays are long and super duper specific)

I regret taking this class. Dr. Rush is extremely picky about being specific about topics. Between the two thousand-word essays and the handwritten five-paragraph essay plus in-depth definitions of keywords for exams, this class is not worth the trouble. Dr. Rush is also completely scatterbrained when it comes to lectures and hardly gives you the adequate amount of information to even study the terms needed for exams. Attendance is absolutely mandatory and will bring your grade down even with an excused absence. Honestly, she thinks too highly of herself and needs a reality check. She once made a comment on my papers telling me my sentence structure was convoluted... This class also does not go over the law ever. The title should just be pirates because that's all we learned about. Discussions were pointless. I would never recommend this class. You will also use a completely obsolete form of citations and be expected to do them perfectly by hand for every assignment. Good luck.

The class is pretty interesting and she is a very good lecturer. The papers are very specific and can be a little bit challenging if you haven't wrote a college level history paper before. Her tests aren't too hard if you do atleast a little bit of studying.

Dr. Rush is a really nice lady and understanding when you need extensions on papers. She is also very knowledgeable about British history. However, her lectures were boring to me and seemed like they had no structure. It seemed as though she would just go on and on about one thing, and then all of a sudden talk about a new topic with no transition. The TA I had for this class graded very harshly, as well as Dr. Rush who is very nitpicky with your wording on assignments and will take off points for the smallest mistake. This class was not what I expected it to be, and I regret taking it.

Dr. Rush is a good teacher, very lenient if you ask for an extension, and knows her history. She is also very engaged in what she talks about throughout the whole semester. There is very little review of the book that you are assigned to buy because a lot of the material is posted on ELMS under modules, so the book is a waste of money.

Dr. Rush is by far my favorite teacher! She keeps the entire class engaged for the entire time. It's truly the only class I don't find myself watching the time in. Additionally, she is the only teacher I've had who learned everybody's names. There's a good mix between lecture and interactive work. I was originally worried because I heard she was a hard grader, but I now disagree. As long as you hit all the questions she asks for in written work you will receive an A. She really wants her students to achieve and takes time to get to know the class. I would love to take another course with her. I highly recommend it!!

Dr. Rush is an incredible teacher! She is very organized, knowledgable, and understanding. For the lawlessness class I took, her syllabus thoroughly outlined everything we'd be doing: no surprises. She also gives very specific lists of what is going to be asked on our midterms/finals and posts video versions of her lectures. At least a quarter of her lectures end up being the students asking questions because everyone is so interested in the subject! That being said, this class is not easy. The essays are a little hellish, and the readings are fairly time consuming (especially for a gen-ed). But I felt it was worth it! At least 2 senior/juniors have told me lawlessness is one of their favorite classes they've taken at UMD. Plus, you get to tell your friends you're taking a class about pirates. And you get to learn about pirates. So like...

She was very excited about the class, which was about lawlessness. She was very approachable and always wanted to hear our opinions and not just hers. She was passionate, knowledgeable, and effective at lecturing. The exams weren't too hard, as she gave out possible short answers and essay questions. Received a 4 because her power points sometimes were cluttered and didn't have much of a structure
