I took this class as a GenEd and didn't enjoy it at first but then I began to enjoy it more. You have a discussion every week and readings that you talk about in your post, so you have to make sure you include them in the post or they will drop your grade. The professor posts lecture slides for each class and doesn't take attendance but you will want to come for some of the information not included in the slides for papers. You have 2 papers and a final project over the semester. I highly recommend going to either the professor's or TA's office hours when preparing the papers because I saw an increase in my grade when I consulted them for help. They are also really nice and welcoming people so you shouldn't worry about asking for help.

Amazing lectures, despite posting the powerpoints with great detail--I never wanted to miss a class because she really makes you capture the lesson--never a bore. Had a TA and divided grading between them but I would say they're fair and give good feedback. As of graded work, there are weekly discussion posts--about a paragraph answering a question and connecting it to a one of the assigned readings + replying to another person. Two 4-ish page essays. A final paper/presentation/website--your choice. Definitely attend discussion section because participation is graded--it's mostly discussing the readings and lecture. Sometimes the readings got out of hand so I just skimmed/read the short ones/picked out parts of them that I felt was important--just have something to say in discussion to decide how much you should read, but also note that the readings are sources you use for the essays so you'll need some of them.

an amazing professor. took for a gened but ended up taking more of her classes later on. she keeps everything interesting and is helpful with feedback. i had caitlin kennedy for my TA and she was amazing as well. 2 papers and a final project/essay, with weekly discussion boards that were easy if you just do the few readings. super fair class and really interesting topics too.

Dr. Keane is an amazing professor! I thoroughly enjoyed her class. Her lectures are engaging and informative, and she makes an effort to make individual connections with the students, even if it is a 75 person lecture. For any other conservative students out there, Dr. Keane does seem quite liberal, but with a little discretion you can still enjoy her lectures. She also seems to be open to discussion, and her class isn't a place you will get attacked for your beliefs.

An Overall great professor very caring and kind with a very manageable workload. There is not much to say other than if you're thinking about taking her take her she's an easy A as long as you put in the work which isn't a lot maybe a discussion board post once a week and a 2-3 essays the entire semester.

I 100% recommend this course to anybody who's slightly interested in humanities/history and needs a HU credit. it was such an insightful class and she really knows her stuff. She knows what she's talking about, was super nice, and she really likes and appreciates it when you reach out to her outside of class. She's really willing to answer a lot of questions and help you on any of the 2 papers we had to write. other than the papers we just had to do a discussion board once a week which was chill, but those are the bulk of you grades and are 3 points so you need to really clutch those 3 points each week.

Professor Keane is so great and interesting. She fully knows the course and does not waste your time! I am usually not a big fan of history courses, but this class is so interesting and has affected the way I shop and look at our society now. Professor Keane is super understanding if you ever need an extension and she knows that we have busy schedules and can always accommodate for her students. I cannot recommend her enough!

Loved this class. Dr. Keane is an amazing lecturer and the content was really interesting. Grading was based off of 2 papers, a final project, weekly discussion posts, and participation in discussion section. To be successful in this class, you have to attend the lectures (they are engaging so it is worth going to anyways). I was fortunate to have an amazing TA but a lot of the grading is done by the TA so that could potentially impact the course. Take this class!!!

Both the professor and the TA were kind people who I felt like took current circumstances into consideration and adapted well to it. I personally loved this class and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting elective to open their mind to new ideas.

Dr. Keane is a great lecturer and HIST289R is a very interesting course. It was one lecture I really enjoyed going to. The only work in the class is 2 essays which are not that hard. I found it a little difficult to get higher than an A- because the grading is a little hard. Would definitely recommend this class!

I loved this lecture. Professor Keane seems to be a very sweet and genuine person. She is engaging and passionate about the subject. There is practically no homework for this class. Two essays, one debate, a final exam (short answer definitions and two essays), and some reading for each discussion. Before taking the final, I would have recommended skimming the readings just enough to talk about them. But you will actually need to cite them in your final exam essays, so I would take enough notes on each reading to be able to remember what they discussed so you can reference them later. She will provide you with the 8-10ish possible prompts for the final, as well as all possible terms you may have to define to help prepare you, so there will be no surprises. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing TA (Slavik) who made discussion very engaging. He also helped me a ton on essays-which he graded. Work hard on the few assignments you have and GO TO LECTURE. Her powerpoints (which she does post online) have very few words so it is important that you go to class and write down what she says. Skipping class and later referencing the powerpoints will not do too much for you. Overall I highly recommend this class, and I am not someone who traditionally likes history courses.

Professor Keane is an awesome professor. I had her for HIST289R. Just the right amount of work, as there were 2 essays, some busy work, participation in discussion and the final. Seriously, she is so nice, and makes lectures so interesting and relevant. Any class she is teaching, I would 100% take again. GREAT GREAT GREAT professor.

Prof. Keane is a fun lecturer and very nice person. My only problem with her lectures are that she has a powerpoint but not many words to take notes on. Going to lectures isn't necessary but there are some interesting/important things in there. The classwork isn't very bad. There are 2 big essays, 1 final, participation in discussion grades, and a few small assignments. There is A LOT of reading every week that you should do for discussion but it isn't necessary to do all of it. Just do some so you can participate somewhat in discussion. The essays are the only hard part of this class, but overall the class is pretty easy.

Dr. Keane has been fabulous. Her lectures are well organized, engaging, and filled with fun video clips and pop culture reference. The assignments were pretty easy, as well. A few quizzes, two papers, a debate, and a final exam. Her TAs, however, are atrocious. One can barely string a coherent sentence together, while the other jumps wildly between the "cool, relatable TA" model and a no nonsense, strict as all get out crazy person. They are the only serious drawbacks to taking the course. If Dr. Keane can find some new TAs, she'll have a close to perfect class.
