One of the best professors I have had at UMD. I took her two semesters in a row. Her classes are super interesting and her lectures are engaging. There was some reading although it isn't all necessary. There were a few essays and a final project that you could choose from (website, essay, etc.). Highly recommend her courses.

The professor is engaging and is a good lecturer and makes coming to class worthwhile despite the lecture slides posted for each day. There are weekly readings with a discussion post and reply about them due each week (33%), a discussion section where attendance is taken (12%), 2 essays during the semester (15% each), and a final exam with two short essays responding to questions (20%). The discussion posts/sections are basically guaranteed full points unless you don't do them which is a nice cushion on top of the fairly generous grading for essays. Only thing to note is that the professor does not check her emails outside of work hours and doesn't give extensions so start on the papers in advance to get all the questions in before the weekend.

This is genuinely my favorite class I have taken at this university, Dr. Keane is the kind of professor every student dreams of having. Her lectures are fun and engaging, her assignments are creative, and she always lends her topics this remarkable weight and seriousness since the subject matter is really important, but in a way that never feels overwhelming.

I took this class as a GenEd and didn't enjoy it at first but then I began to enjoy it more. You have a discussion every week and readings that you talk about in your post, so you have to make sure you include them in the post or they will drop your grade. The professor posts lecture slides for each class and doesn't take attendance but you will want to come for some of the information not included in the slides for papers. You have 2 papers and a final project over the semester. I highly recommend going to either the professor's or TA's office hours when preparing the papers because I saw an increase in my grade when I consulted them for help. They are also really nice and welcoming people so you shouldn't worry about asking for help.

Amazing lectures, despite posting the powerpoints with great detail--I never wanted to miss a class because she really makes you capture the lesson--never a bore. Had a TA and divided grading between them but I would say they're fair and give good feedback. As of graded work, there are weekly discussion posts--about a paragraph answering a question and connecting it to a one of the assigned readings + replying to another person. Two 4-ish page essays. A final paper/presentation/website--your choice. Definitely attend discussion section because participation is graded--it's mostly discussing the readings and lecture. Sometimes the readings got out of hand so I just skimmed/read the short ones/picked out parts of them that I felt was important--just have something to say in discussion to decide how much you should read, but also note that the readings are sources you use for the essays so you'll need some of them.

Dr. Keane was one of the best history professors I've had. She has an incredible depth of knowledge about the subjects she teaches and lectures act more like discussions. She is flexible in terms of the content she covers and is willing to adjust the content of a class to whatever the students feel is interesting most of the time. I came into the class with a general interest in the 1960's, but I was not very aware of the deeper content. However, this was not a problem for me as I was engaged in all of the lectures she taught and grading was not very rigorous. I looked forward to her lectures and the assignments were far from the most tedious I've had to take in a history course here. If the 1960's at all interests you I would highly recommend taking this class with her.

Professor Keane is an amazing lecturer and makes the topic engaging and easy to understand. The class overall isn’t very hard, just weekly readings and a discussion post, and two essays and a final project for the whole course. Going to class is definitely important for this course because she doesn’t put a ton of words on her slides but she gives really good explanations of it in class. The lectures are genuinely worth it to intend because Professor Keane makes it so interesting and is genuinely excited about the content. The TA for the course was also very nice and both are very willing to help out with papers and stuff.

an amazing professor. took for a gened but ended up taking more of her classes later on. she keeps everything interesting and is helpful with feedback. i had caitlin kennedy for my TA and she was amazing as well. 2 papers and a final project/essay, with weekly discussion boards that were easy if you just do the few readings. super fair class and really interesting topics too.

Dr. Keane is an amazing professor! I thoroughly enjoyed her class. Her lectures are engaging and informative, and she makes an effort to make individual connections with the students, even if it is a 75 person lecture. For any other conservative students out there, Dr. Keane does seem quite liberal, but with a little discretion you can still enjoy her lectures. She also seems to be open to discussion, and her class isn't a place you will get attacked for your beliefs.

She was so committed, caring, and productive in our class. She is a very knowledgable, charismatic, and professional professor. The lectures consisted of PowerPoints that were already posted. She was very organized. She would go through the slides but would add lots of details and relevant information. She taught beyond just women's history, but an expanded perspective of the time period being studied. The content was very interesting to me and I think it would be to anyone. We had weekly discussion posts. I felt it was very possible to fall behind, but I very much suggest asking for help in a timely manner. The professor and the TA were always offering help.

Dr. Keane is an excellent professor and is very passionate about the topics that she teaches. This class focuses on women's history, and it really goes into depth and explains a lot of things that I had never considered or learned about, despite being a history major. The class is really important in my opinion and Dr. Keane made showing up to class a real treat. Very engaging lectures, discussion attendance was mandatory and participation is a big part of your grade. Class was 2 essays, 3-4 pages each, and a final.

This has been my favorite class I've ever taken here. The professor is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about women's history. You will learn more about American history and women's history more in this class than you ever have before. She includes all sides of the story, including LGBT, African American, Immigrant, White, Low-income, High-income, etc. Not only is she an amazing professor, she also has taught me things I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The class consists of weekly discussion posts and readings, 2 essays, and a final. My one stipulation is the TA graded a little too harsh for a 200 level class and grades on essays came a little later than I would've liked.

HIST211/WGSS211 is a fantastic class and it wouldn't be half as great if Dr. Keane wasn't teaching it! on the very first day, she told us to challenge her if she ever suggested universality in women's experiences, which i thought was so important to say as she wanted us to always be critically thinking and feel free to challenge what she says. of course, we hardly ever had to challenge universality because she always presented a plethora of women's perspectives. she fits so much content and material into every lecture it's incredible how much i learned every single class. she posts the lecture slides online which are great if you miss class, need to check notes, use them for a discussion post, etc. (but you won't really want to miss class). weekly discussion posts aren't hard since she gives you guiding questions and tells you how to format your posts. two essays weren't super hard, i procrastinated on one of them until the day it was due and still got an A lol. going to discussion is also important but the TA Julia does a really good job of facilitating the conversations. this course should be required as you learn soooo much stuff that i wish everyone knew!

An Overall great professor very caring and kind with a very manageable workload. There is not much to say other than if you're thinking about taking her take her she's an easy A as long as you put in the work which isn't a lot maybe a discussion board post once a week and a 2-3 essays the entire semester.

I 100% recommend this course to anybody who's slightly interested in humanities/history and needs a HU credit. it was such an insightful class and she really knows her stuff. She knows what she's talking about, was super nice, and she really likes and appreciates it when you reach out to her outside of class. She's really willing to answer a lot of questions and help you on any of the 2 papers we had to write. other than the papers we just had to do a discussion board once a week which was chill, but those are the bulk of you grades and are 3 points so you need to really clutch those 3 points each week.

Loved this class. Dr. Keane is an amazing lecturer and the content was really interesting. Grading was based off of 2 papers, a final project, weekly discussion posts, and participation in discussion section. To be successful in this class, you have to attend the lectures (they are engaging so it is worth going to anyways). I was fortunate to have an amazing TA but a lot of the grading is done by the TA so that could potentially impact the course. Take this class!!!

This was a.. mixed bag. Bear in mind that unlike the other classes that this professor has reviews for, this is for a 300 level class during the pandemic online classes era. So *maybe* this isn't representative of her actual nature as a professor. The recorded lectures, selected readings, and content of the class is done quite well. I found it quite engaging and if we just went by that, my review would be sitting at 5 stars. But, it's not. My experience with this professor has honestly made me feel horrible. The content is interesting, but it is quite a LOT of reading and note taking to do. It's definitely possible to wing it if you just want to get the discussion post out of the way, but this has been one of those classes that'll often feel like I'm putting in the work of two classes for one just to churn out a single discussion post and some zoom meeting contributions. I would not advise taking this course if your other courses also have heavy loads and if you don't like to BS your work. I have a learning disability among some other mental health issues during this already tough semester of online classes. So, I'm sometimes going to need some help or extra time to get my things for this class and my other classes done on time. Especially if I also want time to be able to take basic care of myself. Despite detailing the fact that I at one point was quite literally working myself to exhaustion, mentioning my conditions, and the fact that I was technically cleared for ADS accommodations to this professor, she flat out refuses to budge on the due dates for weekly discussion posts and other assignments. Instead, the only accommodation she was willing to give me is giving me course content ahead of time. In theory this gives me a good amount of extra time. In practice, she's essentially raised her expectations of what I'm to do even higher as I'd need to grind even harder and for a time give up what little semblance of breathing room I had to get ahead enough to actually be able to make meaningful use of this. There has also been other instances of me asking this professor for extensions on other things, only to be met with a hostile sounding "no" that blatantly disregards my own issues and makes me feel like I'm the lazy one. Among a few other things, one instance where I asked for extra time was because of me taking a night medication during the day by accident. My other professors responded and gave me the OK for extra time, while this one seems to have waited on responding until I ended up having to do everything anyway because of of a lack of a response. My therapist has also contacted her about this, and has gotten no response from her. If you don't have any disability or mental health issues that could slow down the rate at which you work, then professor Keane is probably great. But if you do, you might want to think twice before taking her class. Fortunately, I've been able to keep up better lately and be able to live a little. But, that's also because I recently dropped a class from another very unaccommodating professor to help free up time and energy.

I loved this lecture. Professor Keane seems to be a very sweet and genuine person. She is engaging and passionate about the subject. There is practically no homework for this class. Two essays, one debate, a final exam (short answer definitions and two essays), and some reading for each discussion. Before taking the final, I would have recommended skimming the readings just enough to talk about them. But you will actually need to cite them in your final exam essays, so I would take enough notes on each reading to be able to remember what they discussed so you can reference them later. She will provide you with the 8-10ish possible prompts for the final, as well as all possible terms you may have to define to help prepare you, so there will be no surprises. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing TA (Slavik) who made discussion very engaging. He also helped me a ton on essays-which he graded. Work hard on the few assignments you have and GO TO LECTURE. Her powerpoints (which she does post online) have very few words so it is important that you go to class and write down what she says. Skipping class and later referencing the powerpoints will not do too much for you. Overall I highly recommend this class, and I am not someone who traditionally likes history courses.

Prof. Keane is a fun lecturer and very nice person. My only problem with her lectures are that she has a powerpoint but not many words to take notes on. Going to lectures isn't necessary but there are some interesting/important things in there. The classwork isn't very bad. There are 2 big essays, 1 final, participation in discussion grades, and a few small assignments. There is A LOT of reading every week that you should do for discussion but it isn't necessary to do all of it. Just do some so you can participate somewhat in discussion. The essays are the only hard part of this class, but overall the class is pretty easy.

Dr. Keane has been fabulous. Her lectures are well organized, engaging, and filled with fun video clips and pop culture reference. The assignments were pretty easy, as well. A few quizzes, two papers, a debate, and a final exam. Her TAs, however, are atrocious. One can barely string a coherent sentence together, while the other jumps wildly between the "cool, relatable TA" model and a no nonsense, strict as all get out crazy person. They are the only serious drawbacks to taking the course. If Dr. Keane can find some new TAs, she'll have a close to perfect class.

Dr. Keane is a great professor! She works very hard and is very passionate about what she teaches. A decent amount of reading was assigned. However, you will be able to pass on the reading if you pay attention and take notes during class. If you want to skip a bunch of classes and Facebook all the time while you are in class....well this class isn't for you. If you intend to come to most of the classes, pay attention and participate then you can probably be sure you will at least get a B out of this.
