One of the best professors I have had at UMD. I took her two semesters in a row. Her classes are super interesting and her lectures are engaging. There was some reading although it isn't all necessary. There were a few essays and a final project that you could choose from (website, essay, etc.). Highly recommend her courses. |

Dr. Keane was one of the best history professors I've had. She has an incredible depth of knowledge about the subjects she teaches and lectures act more like discussions. She is flexible in terms of the content she covers and is willing to adjust the content of a class to whatever the students feel is interesting most of the time. I came into the class with a general interest in the 1960's, but I was not very aware of the deeper content. However, this was not a problem for me as I was engaged in all of the lectures she taught and grading was not very rigorous. I looked forward to her lectures and the assignments were far from the most tedious I've had to take in a history course here. If the 1960's at all interests you I would highly recommend taking this class with her. |

hated this teacher. not sympathetic in the slightest and I learned nothing on zoom. Worst upper-level history course I have taken. We didn't even talk about JFK in a class about the 60s!!!!!!! |

This was a.. mixed bag. Bear in mind that unlike the other classes that this professor has reviews for, this is for a 300 level class during the pandemic online classes era. So *maybe* this isn't representative of her actual nature as a professor. The recorded lectures, selected readings, and content of the class is done quite well. I found it quite engaging and if we just went by that, my review would be sitting at 5 stars. But, it's not. My experience with this professor has honestly made me feel horrible. The content is interesting, but it is quite a LOT of reading and note taking to do. It's definitely possible to wing it if you just want to get the discussion post out of the way, but this has been one of those classes that'll often feel like I'm putting in the work of two classes for one just to churn out a single discussion post and some zoom meeting contributions. I would not advise taking this course if your other courses also have heavy loads and if you don't like to BS your work. I have a learning disability among some other mental health issues during this already tough semester of online classes. So, I'm sometimes going to need some help or extra time to get my things for this class and my other classes done on time. Especially if I also want time to be able to take basic care of myself. Despite detailing the fact that I at one point was quite literally working myself to exhaustion, mentioning my conditions, and the fact that I was technically cleared for ADS accommodations to this professor, she flat out refuses to budge on the due dates for weekly discussion posts and other assignments. Instead, the only accommodation she was willing to give me is giving me course content ahead of time. In theory this gives me a good amount of extra time. In practice, she's essentially raised her expectations of what I'm to do even higher as I'd need to grind even harder and for a time give up what little semblance of breathing room I had to get ahead enough to actually be able to make meaningful use of this. There has also been other instances of me asking this professor for extensions on other things, only to be met with a hostile sounding "no" that blatantly disregards my own issues and makes me feel like I'm the lazy one. Among a few other things, one instance where I asked for extra time was because of me taking a night medication during the day by accident. My other professors responded and gave me the OK for extra time, while this one seems to have waited on responding until I ended up having to do everything anyway because of of a lack of a response. My therapist has also contacted her about this, and has gotten no response from her. If you don't have any disability or mental health issues that could slow down the rate at which you work, then professor Keane is probably great. But if you do, you might want to think twice before taking her class. Fortunately, I've been able to keep up better lately and be able to live a little. But, that's also because I recently dropped a class from another very unaccommodating professor to help free up time and energy. |
