Special Topics in History; What Does Government Do? Politics, Policy, and Opportunity in the Modern United States

In the dominant narrative, economic growth and political "progress" in the U.S. have been driven primarily by citizens' commitment to individual and market "freedoms" and an embrace of democratic values. In this course, we test that narrative by examining the role of government--of public power and authority--in shaping modern American life, opportunity, and political rights.
