History of Women and Gender in Africa

Prerequisite: HIST122 or HIST123; or permission of ARHU-History department. Credit only granted for: HIST412 or HIST428L. Formerly: HIST428L. An examination of socio-economic and cultural change in Africa from the dawn of the colonial era in the 19th century to independence in the mid-twentieth century. Major focus on how African women understood and responded to the expansion of European empires, changes in the colonial economy, and impact of westernization and urbanization.
