First off prepare to read for this class. It is constant readings over 20 pages everytime for every single class. Most lectures are her talking for 50 min straight but you still have to go. While she claims to be open to everyone's opinion if you say or write anything make sure it aligns with her opinion. The class isn't too hard as there is a lot of peer reviewing for grades and the Process Essays are just completion. The TA (Dalton) is the absolute best he is so understanding if you need a extension on papers and very approachable. Otherwise you won't know your grade until it gets posted on Testudo so just hope and pray. Attendance is mandatory as you can only miss 3 unexcused before being pentalized. |

Pros: - Very passionate professor, you can tell that she loves what she teaches, especially when it came to Othello - Fascinating topic taught in a sensitive way, even if lectures and discussions were sometimes boring - Relatively lenient grading on written assignments Cons: - LOTS of reading that you can't escape from b/c of the discussion-based classes, including some very technical pieces - Most of your grade is contingent on two papers (a 4-page midterm and an 8-page final), and there isn't a lot of transparency about how those papers are graded / help along the way - Some parts of the class seemed a little muddled/disorganized at times, but that's probably because this was a new class this year Overall: Good professor, interesting content, but expect a ton of work, and know that the content may sometimes be uncomfortable (intentionally so) or confusing |

She is not an easy professor, but if you put in the effort this class it will be very interesting and you will get a lot out of it. The class relies heavily on discussion, so just participate and you will be fine. It is graded pretty easily, and the content is very interesting and Dr. Coles is generally good at explaining it. |
