Although Kim Cole’s is a kind person she was a very disorganized teacher. The class had little to no structure and caused a lot of issues when it came to class discussion. “Debates” were often led by her and not by the students. This was not my favorite class this year due to disorganization and constant frustration. The books we read were all very similar and this class requires a lot of reading (which is to be expected for college). If there was more structure and more variety in the readings as well as better communication from Professor to students the class would have been better but sadly it was a frustrating class.

Dr. Coles is really passionate about Shakespeare, which is cool because most people aren't. She really needs people to participate in class, so definitely read and talk when she asks questions because she will get frustrated if you don't. The class is fairly simple, with about 4 essays total but a lot of reading, as in a new play every week, so be prepared for that. She definitely knows her stuff, and our conversations were really interesting. She just has a quirky personality and hates awkward silence, so do your best to avoid that and you'll be fine.

Kim Coles is an incredible, incredible professor! ENGL301 is a notoriously useless, disliked class, but Coles' version was my favorite class since starting at UMD. Professor Coles is incredibly knowledgable and passionate about what she teaches, and she is a very understanding professor. For example, I emailed her after the submission deadline had passed asking to redo a paper, and she allowed me an extension to improve it. She also pushed back the reading schedule when most of us had not done the reading one day, no penalization. She isn't an "easy" professor, but she understands being a student is hard, and she prioritizes learning and discussions over her pre-set format. Class is way more fun if you do the readings, which in my opinion were always very rich and interesting! (We read Love songs of W.E.B. Du Bois and Felon: Poems by Reginald Dwayne Betts, for some examples!)
