Class was pretty easy and fairly interesting. Decent amount of work but nothing too crazy. Professor is great, TA graded a bit stupidly and took points off for no reason. But take this course if you're interested in democracy stuff and hope for a better TA.

Dr. Maddux is a really great professor, and this class is pretty easy if you put in the slightest bit of effort. Dr. Maddux is engaging, but most of the class doesn't pay attention anyway. There are readings for every class that you usually have to answer a discussion question for, and there are also a lot of in-class assignments, but these are all graded on completion. The observation posters are annoying to complete but not too bad. Overall, I highly recommend this class.

Overall this class is an easy A, however, I feel like a lot of the assignments were graded unfairly. If you care about democracy take this class but If not find something else to take as you will be spending the bulk of your time reading and writing. For an honors class the assignments were graded too harshly given the lack of a clear and conscience rubric (there was literally no rubric for some assignments). The professor isn't too bad just a shame that the grading was taken too seriously for a class that should be an easy 100%.

I would recommend this course mainly because Dr. Maddux is the one teaching it, and she does not make it very difficult to succeed. Pros: - Fairly easy, participatory reading/writing prompts that are due before each class period's lecture (never took me more than an hour to complete one) - Lectures are easy-going, easy to engage with if you so choose, but also a good means to distract yourself with other things as many students do - Discussion-based lectures that, more often than not, actually inspire thinking (however this is not always true) - Maddux actually inspires people to provide opposing viewpoints to "the norm", which is great for a course about democracy - There are 3 Posters due throughout the semester where you must "engage with local democracy" - These are the crux of the course and tend to be quite easy as long as you give enough effort and truly engage with the writing prompts - Provide sample posters from previous students, so you know what to expect for posters - Group project final, which is not much work even for one person to complete - Also has a "Final Exam" essay, which is not very difficult Cons: - Converse of what I said earlier, but lectures sometimes can be a bore because it can seem like we are only talking in circles (more students' faults than hers) - Although this is a Gen Ed course essentially, there will be a lot of reading that could eat up your time (would recommend summarizing with AI) - I genuinely didn't gauge many profound ideas from this course, everything seemed pretty surface-level and lacking real nuance Overall, this course is fair and should be a relatively easy A (or worst case, A-) as long as you complete your work and give a bare minimum level of effort. Don't expect to genuinely learn from this course, but rather to more so challenge your perspective of what democracy is and how much of a role the individual (and thus a network of individuals) plays in forming the basis of democracy aside from institutions and governments. Maddux makes the course pretty easy and straightforward to do well in, all it takes is a sufficient level of effort (again, the threshold for such is quite low).

Not a great professor. The TAs grade everything and it depends on if you have a friendly one or the latter. Generally a useless course other than for an elective and department justification. Easy A and they grade the observation posters quite subjectively. Take it if you want to be bored out of your mind.

Unlike many college professors, Professor Maddux does a great job preparing for class. Each lesson is unique and usually involves a fun activity. Her teaching style reminds me of high school, which (1) means she actually knows how to teach effectively, and (2) may be a nice refresher for some students. Major assignments included: (1) Weekly readings and accompanying writing prompts, usually 6-7 sentences. 1-2 hours. (2) Most classes (60%?) included an in-class assignment, which varied from lesson to lesson. 5-10 minutes. (3) Three major projects, which were presented to classmates in the form of a poster. 3-5 hours. Professor Maddux had very reasonable expectations for students. Her class was laidback and comfortable, which unfortunately meant a lot of students didn't pay attention in class, but also that the class is very low-stress (as it probably should be). Although the class was easy, I felt that it was extremely useful. It educated us on topics that most people never think about, yet is essential to our daily lives and the health of our nation. I'll be thinking about the topics we learned in this class for a long time to come. I highly recommend this professor. HNUH278B "Democratic Habits" Spring 2024

Professor Maddux is very kind and easygoing. She grades assignments generously (much of your grade is completion) and makes the content pretty engaging. Definitely recommend taking this class with her, it's very straightforward and she keeps the workload light and stress-free.

Not many complaints, I didn't pay attention in class at all, but Dr. Maddux is chill enough to not care, plus she is a really great speaker. Class consists of her leading discussions with students about key concepts that she wants to communicate, and writing a reflection about the discussion that is automatically graded a 10/10. The projects for the class are kind of annoying though, you have to go out in the "Route One Corridor" 3 separate times and attend events, then make a poster about each one. Overall, you can put a minimal amount of effort into the class and get an A, and the content is decently interesting. I would recommend this professor and class.

Super chill professor and class. Very understanding and wants you to succeed. Doesn't force people to participate and most assignments are done in class so not super time consuming.
