Terrible. Disorganized class. Very poor instructions with 0 teaching. Many textbooks are required for the class which you have to search for (make sure it's the right edition or you're screwed). One of the worst professors ever.

The professor really taught us how to follow the design and research pipeline. It was a group work heavy class but as long as you actually attended and did the assignments you would receive an A. I know many people complained about the mandatory attendance but I appreciated it as it made sure the other group members would show up. The professor really cared about what she was teaching !

One of the more terrible professors I have had. Very confusing course instructions with a lot of work that teaches students absolutely nothing. A very interesting course description but terribly down and mainly just busy work all day every day.

Grad student who is not really sure how to teach. No real world experience and unable to keep class engaged. Easy A but didn't get much from the class

Professor Surla was overall a great and helpful professor. She cared about her students and made sure everyone would understand the assignments. This class is mainly based off of your group project so be prepared to work in groups. Overall the class was pretty straightforward, the assignments weren't challenging, and the lectures were very informative.

Dr Tammy makes this class great. She always has energy and makes the course enjoyable to come to. While User Centered Design isn't my passion she made the classes fun to the point where I enjoyed the course. The course is one big group project in which you just progressively do more parts. She is always willing to help you and is amazing. Shoutout to Rie also for being an amazing TA. l would 100% recommend taking this course with Tammy.

Class is group work heavy. The grading is a bit harsh considering how the vague rubric can be. However, the professor provides really good critique and is lenient with delays/extra credit.

Passionate dude but the workload is ridiculous. Assignments take way longer than they should. He's really nice tho

Ge Gao is an extremely knowledgeable professor who is literally a golden gem when it comes to how much information she knows. For this course, the lectures were pretty long but also VERY informative. Coursework requires a bit of thinking and she can ask some thought-provoking questions so be prepared to think but have fun. She's not gonna hold it against you or anything like that, haha! I really do believe that this course holds up really well as a core class due to how informative it is. I did find myself using most of the skills taught here in the UXTerps Info Challenge Design event. Not sure if I'll use it in the real-world as much depending on what I go into (Data) but I can really see the skills in this course being used in markets where a product is everything to them. Also, I would highly recommend finding a GOOD group quickly as your group will be with you throughout the entire semester.

Course was okay but we never actually designed anything. Didn't teach Adobe tools, or Figma.

she's really nice and I liked that she took us through all parts of the design cycle. She makes learning about the cycle a fun and useful experience, especially if you want to go into UX. She offers extra credit and is caring and nice. Would take her again.

I 100% recommend you take Dr. Tammy for INST362. She is always very energetic and outgoing in lectures keeping you engaged with class activities within the lectures and we do a lot of simple group work. Quizzes are fairly simple and straight to the point aswell. This class is fun and very interested. You will learn very useful information.

Not a very good TA. Probably one of the worst I've experienced at UMD. His attitude and stubbornness during discussion is distracting and normally the questions that are answered are very vague. He fails to provide examples when needed and instead makes you do the thinking from scratch. At the same time, he can act very childish when assignments are being done or presentations aren't being completed. He may be knowledgable in user-design concepts, but his behavior is very poor when it comes to interacting with students. If you take a class with Dr. Caro for 362, please avoid this TA if you can. All the other undergraduate TAs were MILES better.

The nicest, most understanding professor I have ever taken. She understands that students have a life outside of school and would open her office hours every week to talk about things other than assignments! The workload was not difficult, but group work is a main part of the class. The grades are separate so if you do your work, you get the credit, if your partners do not do the work, they don't get the credit. Very fair class and I would take her other classes.

I DO NOT recommend you take this professor. Too much busywork during lectures. Forces you to have mini-group work acitivities where alot of people are either not interested in activity or don't understand the concepts because the professor went over them too quickly. Forces students to participate ALOT more than other professors and makes students get a webcam + mic for online class when it's not really necessary for all but one group activity. This is a pain for students just taking her course as a major requirement. She wants webcams turnt on 100% of them time to make students hold each other "accountable" and to make the learning experience better. The webcams " mandatory always on" policy has not helped students learned better and has annoyed students more than anything else. Quizzes have questions on the minute details of the readings. Finally she does have mid-semester evaluations, where she gets evaluations from students but she has not really listened to the major complaints the class has and insists that she knows her way of running the class is the best. Overall I feel like she is treating her students more like highschoolers than college students because she is doing alot of things highschool teachers do to their students. College students should have the freedom to participate as much as they want in their courses.

Dr. B is a great professor. She knows the material she teaches and is more than willing to help students understand course content on her own time.
