Special Topics in Japanese Studies; Literary Journeys: Travel in Premodern Japan
Literary Journeys investigates the theme of travel in premodern Japanese literature through close readings of travel diaries, poetry collections, folk tales, novels, and plays. Through these texts, we will journey to the capital, the countryside, and supernatural realms. We will examine how stories of travel shaped ideas of identity, spirituality, place, and and national culture. Taught in English.
