So some of you guys might be shocked in why such a low grade, but trust me on this, the grade distribution for this specific class wasn't really the best. So heres a breakdown of my experience: In-Class Discussions: Amazing! Very interesting topics and very understanding of all views. Quizzes: Ctrl F and you're fine, just make sure you do the Perusall's Close/Article Analysis: So extra and tedious.... The grading rubric is very ambiguous based on her opinion rather than clarity and quantity of your analysis. This will most likely be where you lose a lot of points Perusall's: Kind of interesting (For me) but very long. Depends on how much interest and patience you have on specific subjects. Overall if you have to take a culture class, obviously go for it, but be warned, getting an B- to A- you can easily get it without too much work, but A and up is pretty difficult. I realized class tends to be sugar coated.....ALOT Also keep aware that half the class doesn't pay attention/doesn't talk while the other half won't stop talking. So class time might feel like heaven or hell depending on how fun and involved the topics and students are.

Really interesting course, and Dr. Browne is really nice and easy to talk to! There's a fair amount of readings, with 3 projects and 3 quizzes. The way your grade is distributed is pretty balanced, so even if you don't do well in one area you can make up for it in another. Participation is graded, so make sure to be active in small-group and class discussion. Would totally recommend taking any course with Dr. Browne!

If you're a Japanese major/minor or are interested in Japanese culture, I highly recommend taking one of Dr. Browne's classes. JAPN311 was super interesting even though I came in with zero knowledge about classical Japanese. There are regular assignments and quizzes, but they don't take much time and she grades leniently. Dr. Browne is easy to talk to and really cares about her students!
