Selected Topics in Law and Society; Critical Issues in Health Care

Students will examine the policy, legal and ethical components of a number of critical issues in health care delivery. A variety of teaching techniques, including case studies, reading and discussion of classic literature, role plays, and audiovisual clips will be used to explore such topics as the professional/patient or client relationship, professional discipline by licensing boards, medical malpractice, rights of patients to refuse treatment and demand treatment, ethical issues in human subjects research, informed consent and substituted consent in medical decision making, health care reform and regulation of various aspects of the health care system.
