The course content was super interesting, so I highly recommend taking the course even as a non-major. However, I think there are ways that it could be better. My main issue was the amount of content we covered and the amount of the class he actually spent lecturing. We spent 1 week of class just practicing for in class written assignments and another week actually doing those assignments (plus an extra class talking about the paper). The last 2 weeks of class were taken up by oral exams and review for the final. On top of this, we lose the first 10 minutes of every class because part of the participation grade is coming to class with a question about the reading (which was not productive since most of the questions were rather lazy, and he didn't really answer many). Sadly, because of all of this lecture time lost I feel like we did not cover as much, or go in depth as much, as we should have. On a positive note, his handouts are incredible. Probably the best handouts I've gotten in any class. Overall a good class to take but can be frustrating for a philosophy major who wants to get the most out of a very foundational and important class for a philosophy education.

Wish I could take more classes with him! A really good lecturer who makes the class interesting and engaging and explains things well. Listens to student feedback too.

Great professor who cares about his students and is very good at explaining difficult concepts and readings. He gave tips on improving your writing and small outlines of readings during discussions to help you. Just an awesome professor!!

Shen was my TA in PHIL202, took him again this semester for PHIL364. He is fantastic at inciting discussion. He knows what questions to ask and how to respond to students' inquiries. He creates a learning environment that makes you want to attend class so you don't miss out on discussion. The course consisted of 3 essays (2 4-page essays and 1 8-page final) and graded participation. Go to class, enjoy the discussion, and write a few papers. Super enjoyable class and lecturer.

G.O.A.T. Shen knows his stuff and explains it very clearly. He structures the class based on the content that the students would like to learn, shifting off the syllabus schedule if an interesting conversation ignites. He's also very responsive to emails and insanely easy to just ask questions to. There's 2 short essays and a final paper, each which is simple enough given you take the time to think & ask for feedback. PHIL364 was very engaging and interesting due to this man.
