Very knowledgable and welcoming professor, always is receptive to student feedback and makes sure that everybody understands class material. Made an otherwise mundane required class pretty interesting.

He is a wonderful professor. He knows that 303 is a required course so many people aren't super interested, but he delivers the material well and brings in current events and scandals that keep the class engaged. While this is an economics class, there is no graphing or calc, jut simple equations using excel (which he teaches you how to do). There are weekly quizzes, but they made learning the material in the classroom that week much easier. His exams are more than fair.

Professor Spreen is an absolutely phenomenal professor! He is nice, funny, informative, and really helps you learn public budgeting and economics. When I took micro a year ago, I barely eked out a B in that class and still cannot remember much of anything that I learned in that class. Coming into 303, I was terrified that it would be the same exact way, and my grades would suffer - well, I was wrong. The class material was easy to ingest and constantly connected to our daily life, so we could see in real-time what we were learning in class. The classwork was manageable; we had an online reading quiz every week, which was open note and did not take very long to complete. There was a group project on an economics topic that you chose at the beginning of the semester, seven homework assignments in the form of policy memos or Excel assignments, a participation grade based on in-class assignments, and a midterm and final. The professor is always open to meet if you need assistance and can help you feel comfortable with the material. If he is teaching this class, you can't go wrong! It has turned out to be my favorite policy class yet!

Overall this class is very interesting and not terribly challenging. He is very hard on his students I feel that it can be a little too much. He is very strict on participation points which you receive through in class assignments. I was once given a hard time because I did not ask him for help when I did not understand the assignment. He gave me a 0/10 for participation that day. Some times he can be very harsh but do not let it deter you from taking the class because it is really interesting. But always be prepared for class or else it can affect your grade.
