Professor Slaughter is nice enough, but her classes are boring and uneventful. She reads off the slides for a whole hour and 30 min and calls it a day. And to be honest, most of the stuff on the slides is common sense. If you walked into the end of the semester you would think you were taking a public speaking class not a child/family policy class. The assignments were weirdly broad with no direction which is odd because Professor Slaughter expects you to write hefty content. I wrote a 5 page single spaced paper and I'm pretty sure it got glanced over and I was given a 100% purely on looks alone, there was no feedback or little opportunity for feedback during the class. The Professor was also sick + had to get surgery this semester which led her to be absent I think quite literally half the semester. One time she just simply didn't tell anyone and didn't show up. Getting Covid can't be planned, but if you had surgery scheduled then why couldn't you make a schedule for your TA to lead the class instead of us wasting class time and being left behind? I would recommend this class if you need an Easy A and you are decent at writing but the lectures need to be improved if Prof. Slaughter actually wants people to be interested in Children's advocacy |

Overall, the class can be somewhat insightful if you're interested in policymaking and advocacy. However, Professor Slaughter is very unorganized. She hasn't shown up for class multiple times without warning, she takes weeks to grade assignments and takes attendance every class. Some of the directions for the assignments are vague when they could easily be direct and upfront. She did have a medical surgery this semester so I give her some leniency but the lack of communication makes this class unenjoyable. Her lectures are just her reading off of slides which is boring but the class is a relatively easy A. |
