Special Topics in Religious Studies; The Emergence of Islam in Late Antiquity

Cross-listed with RELS319R. The conditions of emergence and the subsequent elaboration of Islam from pre-Islamic Arabia to the classical Abbasid period (9-1 0th c. CE). The question of the appearance of Islam in a Late Antique context will be particularly scrutinized, as well as the making of a discrete Muslim identity.
