SOCY227 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 04/28/2025 |
I took SOCY100 asynchronously with Malackany over the summer and the course was crazy easy, however, after taking SOCY227 with him in person, I don't have many positive things to say about this guy. Not a fan. Extremely boring lecturer, and while he posts his lecture slides, it doesn't matter because he has unannounced participation assignments that you must be in attendance to do and cannot be made up. Exams and quizzes are online, but the questions are written in such a way that they are intended to trip you up. And since they are online and timed, there is no way to ask clarifying questions. He has an incredibly strict late work policy (50% deduction on anything submitted even just a minute late) that he is not willing to negotiate. The TA grades the writing assignments and the discussion questions, so these parts of your grade are dependent on how picky your TA is. Mine was pretty picky during the beginning of the semester, which didn't set me up ideally for the remainder of the semester. The textbook readings are lengthy, and most graded assignments are based on them, so you can't get around doing the readings. There are no opportunities for extra credit, curves, or 'lowest score(s) dropped.' He also completely changed the course schedule a month into the semester, which caused a lot of confusion with due dates and required assignments. I personally will not be taking any other classes given by this guy and wouldn't recommend him either. Not an easy A, so most definitely do not take if you are looking for a GPA boost. Because of the wildly harsh late policy, if you're late on even one assignment, your grade isn't even based on how well you grasp the content (which is contradictory to the point of grades). I wouldn't even recommend it as a fun or mildly enjoyable sociology class -- I'm a crim major and a socy minor and can't even say the content is that interesting. |

SOCY227 Expecting an A naonic 09/18/2023 |
This class was actually really enjoyable. There's a lot of reading, but it's somewhat interesting. Lectures are not mandatory (except for a few days he dictates on the syllabus) and you can still get an A if you skip a few lectures. Most of the assignments and exams are pretty easy. Overall, I liked this class and feel like I learned a lot of interesting stuff. |

SOCY227 Expecting an A DenialWhammy 01/23/2023 |
He has a system where if you put in the work, you get at least a B, if not an A. Engages with his students well, really enjoyed this class. |
