Spanish for the Professions; Spanish in the Community
As the Latina/o population grows in the U.S. and the D.C. metro area, speaking Spanish is a plus, if not a must, in many professions. SPAN 359B will expose you to Latin@ demographics, cultures, communities, and work opportunities. This semester well work in College Park to develop educational materials, parent ESL classes, and tutoring sessions for students. As part of a 9-10 hour service-learning requirement (date/times TBD), students will have the opportunity to work in a local school, teaching English to parents and tutoring children. This class is ideal for students interested in careers in education, social services, translation / interpretation, communication, business, etc. Class format consists of lecture, discussion, blogging, digital storytelling, and collaborative group work in and outside of the classroom. Taught in Spanish and English as part of a Bilingual Series of classes.
