The course was very informative and interesting to learn about. I was very interested because of the discussions that allowed students to connect and understand. However, I do not believe that it was inclusive. The instructor seemed biased. As the course is anti racist and anti discrimination, it is meant to accept every student and their culture, in which I felt I was not. The course has much to offer, but through her promotion of wanting change and inclusivity of cultures it is necessary to accept every students perspective rather than challenge it as being wrong to even speak on. From my experience, great course but teacher has to recognize bias that tried to limit me from speaking on my cultural perspective. |

PLZ RUN WHILE YOU CAN she is so awful! Teaching isnt really there... she talks to the class for like the first 45 minutes before we even discuss the homework readings, if at all. Our class midterm was so bad that many of us reached out to her and she was completely dismissive. Totally unfair, I felt like i did way better on the midterm than she gave credit for and even comapred my exam to an A exam and it was so similar that it made me so angry. The fact that we had a student DROP the class bc of the midterm... a GOOD student who spoke spanish very well, and that is so so telling of who she is as a teacher. Ironically, she told us "Guys you know I don't believe in grades I feel like they are a bad representation of who you really are as students" but then proceeds to grade SO HARSHLY like wtf. She is very disorganized, takes forever to grade, ALWAYS late to class. I had no other option but to take her this semester. I am in no means a bad student, I am in another 400 level spanish class this semester that i LOVE and i have an A in it. |

Bro... the reviews below hit the nail on the head. I had heard these bad things before taking her class but thought there was no way they could be true. Unfortunately, I was wrong. She is incredibly disorganized and irresponsible. Class time was spent discussing whatever political happenings, coronavirus updates, or social justice topics she was interested in for the day. She will find literally any way to waste time and not cover the material. She tries to brainwash you with her views and has an attitude for literally everything. If she finds out you don't agree, you'll be on her bad side and she's pretty overt about it. Now in terms of the assignments, quizzes, and essays: she is EXTREMELY picky and demands perfection. Your wording must be exactly right to earn points. Like someone else said below, the first grade we received was on our introduction posts on the 9th week of class. One of my classmates had to remind HER of the due date because she kept pushing off reviewing our drafts until the weekend before – absolutely irresponsible and hypocritical for someone who doesn't take late work. She slacks so hard, yet expects you to spend hours a week doing her readings and assignments. I emailed her multiple times throughout the semester and she either didn't reply or brushed off my email by replying but not answering the question. There was a point where we were weeks behind in the syllabus (because she was wasting class time discussing nonsense; see above) and when someone asked her when the next quiz would be, she said that we were supposed to be following the Canvas page... okay, but you post them last minute and the information is literally not there, so... ??? Our class met twice a week, yet there were a few times she would wait until the literal hour before I went to bed to post the next day's readings. How annoying. We also had a two-hour movie to watch and 400-word discussion post to do on an asynchronous day and of course she posts it like 12 hours before it's due smh... like we don't have other classes and responsibilities to take care of. Now the worst part about it all is that although she's never seen us in person, she will assume things about your personality, interests, and work ethic based on what she sees in a small Zoom box three hours a week. Like you have no idea who I am, what I do in my free time, or what my accomplishments are. Don't under-estimate me because of your ignorance. Avoid her like the plague!! She's THE worst professor I've had during my time here, and I'm an upper-classman who's dealt with a bunch of STEM courses so yeah... she's pretty bad. |

The first review is so accurate. She is knowledgeable and dedicated to her field of study, but she is incredibly disorganized and irresponsible. She does show up 10 minutes late to each class and has unreasonable expectations for the amount of work to be done in the hour and fifteen minutes in the class. She expects you to read a lot of information, but NEVER reviews it in class. Nevertheless, you will be expected to be able to write in detail on exams. She gives homework, but won't grade it. The first grade I received was in the 9th week of class, and it was a discussion post introducing ourselves. Ana Patricia is unresponsive to student concerns, once answering an email with, "Sorry for not getting back to you, I was busy with work." Isn't this class your job? Would not recommend a class with her. Aside from her teaching, she is a nice person. |

Nice woman, knowledgeable in her field, but TERRIBLE teacher. In a way I admire her, because she takes on so much, and tries to give her all to everything that she is involved with, but I definitely think that her busy life puts a strain on her teaching, and therefore her students. She never returns grades, and if she does, its near the end of the semester. She expects way too much and assigns a ton of readings that she never goes over in class, then expects you to write details about the readings in essay form on the exams. My biggest issue with her though, was her lack of organization. A typical day in her class was: She'd come into class 10 minutes late, then want to discuss some speaker or event that had nothing to do with the class. Then someone would ask a question and she'd spend 20 minutes answering it. Once she realized that she had 5 minutes or less left in class, THEN she'd pull up a powerpoint and attempt to teach, meaning that we never got anything useful out of her sporadic, all-over-the-place lectures. She never had a lesson plan, and we didn't even get a chance to get to all of the material. But she does take attendance for participation grade. The times that she did manage to get out some teaching, I did learn interesting information about the US Latino culture. It opened my eyes as a non-Latino to the struggles they face. We had to plan, coordinate, and initiate a tour of the Latino history in D.C which took up a lot of class time and all of one Saturday. It was fun I guess, but for all the time it took up, I didn't learn much. You have to watch a hour+ long movie every other week and post on it, plus the occasional pop quiz, and exams that require you to write 4 essays in 50 minutes. And like I said, she doesn't return grades and is not very responsive to student concerns. None of this is against her personality though. She's a nice woman, and is knowledgeable about her subject, but leaving readings and videos to teach her students makes her a terrible teacher. |

I previously took USLT201 before USLT202 (even though it is NOT a prereq but it DOES help understand the material) and thought 201 was better. Yes, its interesting to learn about the present day latinos, but Dr. Rodriguez focuses majority on El Salvador immigrants to the Washington D.C area. The class itself was okay, I was clear of her expectations (lots of details w/ reading and writing) and thought the class was actually easier than 201. GET ON HER GOOD SIDE and you WILL get an A.. trust me. |

Dr. Rodriguez is an unique and intellectual professor. Honestly, she may be the best professor I've had my whole college career. USLT has a heavy workload though, but its so interesting that it doesnt seem that bad. We have alot of readings, we went to the smithsonian, and saw many documentaries at hornbake (outside of class). Her class is mostly discussion, rather than lecture. Her teaching style is very helpful in understanding the material. Go to every class, she does take attendance. Overall, its alot of work, but if you are truly interesting in learning latino studies, take her class, you'd be able to handle it! I plan on taking 202 with her! |

She's a very nice person and really passionate about her research areas, but totally out of touch with reality. The amount of work she expects for a 300-level class is absolutely ridiculous. She rarely gives back grades, and when she does it's 2 months after you've turned in the paper. (Literally.) There's a reason all the other 400-level classes for next semester are full or nearly full and hers is half-empty. |

Dr. Rodriguez is very knowledgable in her field of expertise. She brings her own insight to the class as she is an American Latino. Even though I am not Latino, I felt welcomed in the class and learned much about a culture I did not know about. The class has required attendance and is often times discussion based. Many good debates and insights are brought upon by the students and Dr. Rodriguez encourages it. There is a moderate amount of reading to do although the readings are easy to comprehend. There are also many movies to watch in dial access. If you go to class and do all your work and outside readings, you will do decently. |
