This was hands down the worst course I have taken, and I am not even exaggerating. The professor is not understanding towards students needs. He would not provide any practice questions when asked. He would not inform us what chapters/sections of the textbook he was following. He would cold call on people, then tell all of us that we should go back to introductory statistics courses if we did not know the answer to his complex, theoretical questions. I felt completely lost in his class and he did not create an environment where students felt comfortable coming to him to office hours. His final exam only tested on 1 topic out of the 14 different topics he could have chosen from... I think most people ended up passing his course due to a huge curve, but I wish I had actually learned the content. I will never take another course with Professor Yang. |

The worst professor I've had at this university. His lectures consist of him furiously writing on the board without giving any explanation to what he is doing and he'll only turn around to ask questions for less than a second before going back to scribbling again. He believes everything he writes is trivial, when they really are not, but he lectures so fast and incoherently that none of us can ask intelligible questions. He would sometimes cold call on us to answer certain problems, but nobody would be able to give a sufficient response, to which he would essentially berate us saying that we should go back to taking introductory stats classes / shouldn't be in the graduate program. The reality is that most of us don't understand what he is lecturing, so its no wonder we can't answer his questions. This also makes doing the homeworks especially difficult, and his homeworks are completely unrelated to what he lectures in class. The midterm we had was a whole different nightmare though. The structure of the course is 30% HW, 30% MT, 40% Final, and the midterm was 3 questions 30 points. The midterm again was completely unrelated to the lectures or homeworks and involved seeing minuscule tricks, otherwise the questions were undoable. I'm pretty sure the average was less than a 50%, but he curved so the average was a 70%. To top it all off, the professor is extremely cold in and outside of office hours, not accommodating for personal matters, and doesn't give any practice material for exams because he believes he doesn't need to since this is a graduate course (however other graduate professors do give out sample problems for exams). I wouldn't recommend any student (undergraduate or graduate) take a course with him. It will save you lots of stress and time. |
