Great lecturer. He goes through every detail and doesn't assume you know it just because you're in a high-level math class. 5-min break in class. This course, at least taught by Dr. Yang, is not a hard course. It's still mostly calculation with some proofs sprinkled in. Everything is fair and you even get a homework drop. Homeworks are from the textbook so answers can be checked online. He hopefully fixes this but the first three weeks were set theory. Then it's a bunch of CMSC250 (Combinatorics) review. I only got to real new content when we hit random variables, and even then it went at such a nice pace that this was my easiest class the entire semester. Very straightforward, answers all questions, explains things clearly, nice proofs. He actually makes slideshows! Instead of just stating theorems and definitions. You have 2 weeks each to do 7 homework assignments. Each one is 10 questions and I get them done in a few hours. I am a CS major and wouldn't say I'm a math genius. It's still mostly calculation and have basic logical thinking for the proofs. I didn't ever have to think hard about the theoretical homework questions because it tended to just be some algebra or something straight from my notes from class. Would highly recommend for a nice relaxing valuable course. |

Lectures are valuable and full of proofs and examples. Yang always asks for questions and gives a 5min break during lectures. He explains both the math and concepts very well. Even though the slides are posted, attendance is necessary to grasp the concepts unless you do well with self-teaching from the textbook. The class is structured well around the textbook, and if additional help is required, you can always go to the TA. Homework is 10 10pt questions biweekly and is worth 40% of your grade. The midterm and final are 5 20pt questions worth 25% and 35%, respectively. Extremely straightforward class, so don't get lost in the lengthy derivations or rants that sometimes accompany his lectures. This is my first stat class ever as a math major, and I felt comfortable with the topics (after preparing for the very worst). The prereqs don't exactly make sense; a strong math background is all you really need. The class is paced just a little fast and looks scary, but it is very doable. |

I don't understand all these one-star reviews. This has been one of the easiest courses I've taken. The lowest midterm score was 82%, and the highest was 110%. Homeworks are only every other week and are very manageable. His lectures are a little monotone, but it's really not a problem. He also gives a 5-minute break every class. Overall, great course. |

This was hands down the worst course I have taken, and I am not even exaggerating. The professor is not understanding towards students needs. He would not provide any practice questions when asked. He would not inform us what chapters/sections of the textbook he was following. He would cold call on people, then tell all of us that we should go back to introductory statistics courses if we did not know the answer to his complex, theoretical questions. I felt completely lost in his class and he did not create an environment where students felt comfortable coming to him to office hours. His final exam only tested on 1 topic out of the 14 different topics he could have chosen from... I think most people ended up passing his course due to a huge curve, but I wish I had actually learned the content. I will never take another course with Professor Yang. |

This guy said final exam would have both proofs and application questions, but every question was a theoretical proof. He also said that it would emphasize 5 topics covered after the midterm, but the every exam question was on 1 topic, meaning most of us wasted our time studying for the other 4. Some exam questions were also on things he mentioned for less than 10 minutes in lecture. He is not only a poor lecturer, but also lies / chooses to be unclear about what will be tested on exams. Would not recommend... |

The worst professor I've had at this university. His lectures consist of him furiously writing on the board without giving any explanation to what he is doing and he'll only turn around to ask questions for less than a second before going back to scribbling again. He believes everything he writes is trivial, when they really are not, but he lectures so fast and incoherently that none of us can ask intelligible questions. He would sometimes cold call on us to answer certain problems, but nobody would be able to give a sufficient response, to which he would essentially berate us saying that we should go back to taking introductory stats classes / shouldn't be in the graduate program. The reality is that most of us don't understand what he is lecturing, so its no wonder we can't answer his questions. This also makes doing the homeworks especially difficult, and his homeworks are completely unrelated to what he lectures in class. The midterm we had was a whole different nightmare though. The structure of the course is 30% HW, 30% MT, 40% Final, and the midterm was 3 questions 30 points. The midterm again was completely unrelated to the lectures or homeworks and involved seeing minuscule tricks, otherwise the questions were undoable. I'm pretty sure the average was less than a 50%, but he curved so the average was a 70%. To top it all off, the professor is extremely cold in and outside of office hours, not accommodating for personal matters, and doesn't give any practice material for exams because he believes he doesn't need to since this is a graduate course (however other graduate professors do give out sample problems for exams). I wouldn't recommend any student (undergraduate or graduate) take a course with him. It will save you lots of stress and time. |
